Land Deeds, Bk. 6, p. 60) for consideration of $2300, clerk, Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY, in which John and Sarah Houghton convey "the whole of the farm on which the sd. John Houghton now lives...130 acres." This must have been the property spoken of in West Bratteboro. Grantees: John Houghton Jr. and brother Samuel, afterwards of Guilford. The same property was sold back to John, Sr., Nov. 20, 1803 by Eli and Samuel Houghton. John, Jr. had evidently relinquished his equity to Eli, his younger brother. After leaving the saw mill site, John, Sr., moved to a more pretentious house near the foot of the meeting house hill on land across from the present Melrose Hospital, W. Brattleboro.²⁷

Guilford, Windham Co., VT, USA, JWH: "aged 99 years and 4 days"; MLM: "according to the unpublished records of Christ Church (Episcopal) of East Guilford, or Algiers, Windham Co., Vermont, the death occurring at the home of his son, Eli Houghton. At the time of his death, both in the church records mentioned and in contemporary Greenfield, Massachusetts, paper, his age was given as one hundred and one years, but the official record is very clear, and it may be supposed that the old gentleman gradually got to thinking of himself as two years older than he really was. Actually, he was 99 years old when he died. neither his burial place nor those of his three wives are known, consequently, no headstones, as far as I know (H.A.H.) However it is a fair guess that he and his second and third wives found terminal resting places in the cemetery on the meeting house hill, Brattleboro."

Hx of Berlin MA: another John Houghton, called John Tirtius, 3d, sold the place "where he lately dwelt" to Judge Samuel Baker in 1765. No record of his lineage, but his wife was Mary Goddard, the dau. of William Goddard, the miller. They rem. to Brattleboro, Vt., and later to Guilford, where he d. in 1826, aged 101 yrs.

JWH: "John, b. in Lancaster, 6,7,1727; d.6,11,1826, aged 99 years and 4 days; m. 1st Mary Goddard. There has beeen not a little difficulty in tracing the line of this John, some supposing him to have been a descendant of John and others of Ralph. The question has only been definitely settled the present year (1910) by J. C. L. Clark, the present Town Clerk of Lancaster. He says, "The key to the mystery is found in the Lancaster Book of Lands. Naturally even after the separation of Bolton from Lancaster in 1738, various inhabitants of Bolton continued to be Lancaster proprietors and to profit by successive divisions or sales of common lands in the old township. The illuminating reference is to John Houghton (sometimes called "Tertius") 3d's honored grandfather, James Houghton. That furnishes him with an ancestry not from John but from Ralph and this is borne out in various ways by my study of deeds and probate papers at Worcester. Between 1760 and 1769 there were four John Houghtons, twenty one years and over, living in Bolton. In such tangles it is well to remember that in former times the designation "Jr." did not always imply that the bear's father had the same Christian name, as it does at the present day. These were 1st, John Houghton (James, Ralph); m. in 1718 Mehitable Wilson. He was living in 1770. His 3d son was John Houghton, known as 3d or "Tertius," ancestry being (John, James, Ralph), b. in Lancaster 6, 7, 1727; m. 1st, Mary Goddard, and second Sarah ----, by both of whom he had children; he married a third wife, name not known. He removed in 1770 to Brattleboro, Vt., and later to Guilford, Vt, where he died 6,11, 1826. His descendants have claimed the he died at the age of 101 years, and it is so recorded in register of Christ's Church at Guilford. That this is an error is proven by record of his birth in Lancaster 6,7,1727, and date of death in Guilford record given as 6,11,1826. As his brother, Phineas, next older, was born in 1725 clerk could not have made a slip in the year, I believe the error was due to Mr. H. himself coming to believe he was older than he was, first from an error of subtraction and holding that in mind and so continuing to believe it, a not uncommon error with very old people. He was a Loyalist in the time of the Revolution but escaped confiscation of property."

Guilford, p. 467: "John Houghton, b. 1727 in England, d. June 11, 1826 in Guilford. He came to America after the death of his first wife. He bought land in Brattleboro in 1789 and the Houghton homestead in Guilford in 1805. The name of his second wife is not known. He m. (3) Sept. 9, 1798, Sara (dau. of Micah and Silence Rice). She with her parents were the first settlers in Guilford in 1761."; p. 468: Members of the Houghton family have lived on the Houghton farm since 1805; p. 284: in 1805, bought farm of 42 acres and 13 rods. In 1808, John and his wife, Sarah, converyed the property to their son Eli, reserving a life lease. There were 6 generations on same farm."

VT Families: "His name appears on the covenant of the First Church of Brattleboro dated 1770 Nov 12 [Brattleboro, 73]. He was elected a trustee...at the town meeting in 1771 [ibid., 103]. Joseph Clark conveyed a new sawmill, house and land to John, who sold it to Josiah Arms [ibid., 109-110, no date given]. John was listed in School District #3 in a town vote dated 1782 Dec 04 [ibid., 162]. By the first census in 1791, he was living in that part of town called West Brattleboro [ibid., 169, 181]."

MLM: He was sometimes called "Captain" and was known as John Houghton, Tertius, in the records of Bolton.

Brad Stauf: John apparently lived with son Eli and died in his house and may appear on Eli's 1810 census as the male over 45 but there is no corresponding female entry for wife Sarah. Nor does John appear on Eli's 1820 census; Note that regarding John b.1774, it is apparently not definitively proven whether his mother was Mary Goddard or Susannah Dodge. John Houghton Jr. was born 7 Jun 1727[1] [2] in Lancaster, MA to John Houghton and Mehitabel Wilson according to the Lancaster Vital Records and "The Houghton Genealogy" (below, primary sources are listed within that document).

He was in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont by the 1790 census [3] listing 2 males over 16, 2 under 16 and 2 females. He appeared there in 1800 as well[4] with the same 6 family members identified below. [1] [2] [5] [6]

His first marriage is not definitively sourced with primary sources but are estimated based on births of children.

"Houghton Genealogy" published in 1912 stated that John Houghton Jr. had 3 wives, having children by the first 2 of them (Mary Goddard, and Sarah Unknown) followed by a 3rd unknown wife with whom he had no children.

Sarah appears to be Sarah Rice based on Vermont Vital Records if this is the correct Rice/Houghton couple marrying 9 Sep 1798 in Guilford, VT. [7] This would be the daughter of Abijiah Rice and sister of Micah Rice; Micah had his own daughter Sarah Rice born in Guilford. There is some confusion over which Sarah married John Houghton; the aunt or the niece which appears to be resolved by the Guilford 1800 census entry for John Houghto where he appears with the following family members:

Susannah Dodge was the second wife chronologically since John would have been 71 years old when he married Sarah Rice in 1798 and his children John, Anna, Samuel and Eli were all born before that. Further research on Susannah Dodge is needed.

Anna Houghton 1777-1864 was disabled in some way apparently since a deed by Eli & John Houghton gave land to the "poor-master" of Guilford on 2 Jun 1809 in order to provide for Anna. Guilford Death record appears with parents names, exact age 86 years, 10 months, 4 days and the notation "insane for 70 years", cause of death old age.[8]

John, his wife Sarah (Rice) and his sons John Jr, Samuel (plus wife Polly and Eli plus wife "Electa" signed with what looks like "Urata") appear on some property deeds in Brattleboro in 1800 and 1803. John Sr (known as "Esquire" in the deeds) sold his 130 acre farm for $2,300 to John Jr & Samuel in essentially a reverse mortgage as he continued to live there and arranged for a stream of payments to himself and to Sarah after his death. John Jr. sold his interest in the mortgage to brother Eli; then in 1803 Eli & Samuel sold their interest back to John Sr. for $1,000 (see attachments) and deeds 60, 61, 305 and 415[9].

John's 3rd marriage on 9 Sep 1798 appears on Vermont Vital Records as "Miss Sarah Rice" of Guilford; presumably she was not married previously. [10]

John & Sarah have not been found yet on the 1810 and 1820 censuses, he may have lived with one of his children or possibly one of the Rice family.

The "History of the Town of Berlin, Worcester County, Mass., from 1784-to 1895" states only that John "Tertius" married Mary Goddard and that they moved first to Brattleboro, then to Guilford where he died (although it states incorrectly that he was 101 when he died 11 Jun 1826).[2][11] supposedly at the home of his son Eli.

Biography

Wikitree (Hayward Houghton): Cornelius Houghton was born in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut on August 19, 1735. He was the son of Edward Houghton and Abigail MacCoy Houghton. While living in Connecticut, he served in the French and Indian War in 1759 - third company, First Connecticut Regiment. Cornelius was married August 15, 1773 (intentions filed July 18, 1773) in Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Abigail Garfield. Abigail's parents and background are unknown at this time.
Cornelius and Abigail resided in Leicester, Worcester County, until after the birth of their first child in 1775 and then relocated to Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where their remaining children were born. Cornelius died, probably in Winchester, although no record has been found which provides a date or location. It was sometime after September 16, 1784 (when Joel, the youngest son was born) and before February 6 1822, when Abigail died while living in Groton, Massachusetts with son Joel).

Biography

JWH: "He resided in Winchester, N.H., where all his children were born. An abstract copy of Hammond's Revolutionary Rolls, Vol. i., p. 436, says that this Nehemiah Houghton was second Lieutenant of Capt. Francis Ton's company of Col. Gilman's regiment, raised by the state of N. H. in Dec. 1776 to reinforce the Continental army in the state of N.Y.
Also in Vol. X., p. 512 of Provincial and state papers, Winchester, NH, dated June 4, 1780, his name appears as captain, with a commission granted which says: "In pursuance of a vote of the council and Assembly you are to muster and swear all the men brought before you as soldiers, to serve with the Continental army until the last of Dec. next, passing none but able-bodied and effective men."
The troops which he enlisted were placed in the regiment of Col. Nichols, raised by the state of NH and joined the Continental army at West Point in
1780. His name appears in the records of the town meetings as having been elected to various offices of trust from 1764 to 1785 continuously. Aug. 5, 1776, he was chosen one of the "committee of safety and coreespondence, " and from 1778 to 1785 his name appears as holding various township offices. He was elected to and served in the House of Representatives in the year 1779 and 1780, also 1781. The foregoing facts will be of interest at the present time to any one who may desire to establish their right to membership in the societies of either the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution."

MLM: Acted as Muster Master 1781. Also signer of Association Test and member of Committee of Inspection.

VanNoy: "Nehemiah served in various town offices of trust from 1764-1785 and was elected to and served in the House of Representatives 1779-1780 and 1781."

B.H. Houghton, p. 3: "Nehemiah and Eunice are buried in the Evergreen Cemetary, Winchester, New Hampshire. The tombstone reads: Here lies buried Capt. Nehemiah Houghton, Nov. the 22d 1789 in the 52d year of his life. Mrs. Eunice Oct. the 11h 1791 in the 56th year of her age. "Farewell dear friends we part in pain - But hope to live & meet again -"^28,23,20,25
