Biography

Hayward S. Houghton: Joel and Mary lived in Groton on the old road from Groton to what was then South Groton, later Groton Junction and finally the Town of Ayer. A ledger kept by Joel during the years 1818 to 1832 indicate that he operated a grist mill, also a saw mill in partnership with his brother-in-law, James Stone. He also appears to have dealt in meats to some extent.
Wikitree, 2021: Joel Cornelius Houghton was born in Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire September 16, 1784. He was the son of Cornelius Houghton and Abigail Garfield Houghton. After his father's death, he and his mother moved to Groton, Massachusetts where, November 10, 1818, he married Mary Stone. Mary was the daughter of Levi Stone and Lydia Ward Stone. A ledger kept by Joel Cornelius indicates that he operated a grist mill and also a saw mill in Groton in partnership with his brother-in-law, James Stone during the period 1818-1832. Joel Cornelius Houghton died in Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts December 26, 1834. He is buried in the "New" Groton Cemetery. He was 49 years old at his death.²

The date of death appears as above in the Littletwon Vital Records and in a diary for 1872 kept by her daughter-in-law Abby Frances (Hayward) Houghton. Thee age given on the gravestone would make it appear that she was born in 1800. The Littleton Town Report for 1872, however, gives her age as "77 years, 10 months, 10 days."^2,8,5

NEGHR, p. 438: "...migrated from Hinsdale, N.H. to Northfield, Mass., in 1793, moved to Deerfield, Mass., in 1812, and died there 29 September 1820."

JWH: "He was an Inn Holder in Northfield, Mass, in 1793. Removed to Cheapside in 1812. Built a store and was in trade with his sons, Edward and Clark. Clark succeeded his father and brother in 1713 [CJV: 1813?], in the building later occupied by the Abercombies which stood on the east side of the bridge. He also engaged in boating on the river, and finally became blind. He removed to the street and lived on lot number five. He was one of the first settlers of that town in 1749 [CJV: before his birth?; 1794 typo?] and was a man of great enterprise and bravery. In Revolution from N.H. His descendants are said to be very numerous and highly respect. But unfortunately we are unable to learn but little of his history or that of his children. "

B. H. Houghton: "Daniel and Susannah (Pierce or Price) Houghton were married in Winchester, New Hampshire and lived there through the births of their first two children. Noah was the second child and second son of 14 children, and was born on October 30th, 1789. Daniel moved his family across the Connecticut River into Vermont. He appears in the 1790 census in Hinsdale Town, Windham County, Vermont as the head of the household:

NOTE:"The unhospitable custom of 'Warning out of town' which prevailed in Vermont and New Hampshire in the latter part of the eighteenth century was in conformity with the state law, and was intended to prevent new comers from obtaining a settlement and possiblly becoming charges upon the town. As the law was applied to all new comers alike, it did not constitute any reflection upon their characterr. As a warning oout was not effective later than a year after the arrival of a new family, and as an entry was always made on the town records, these entried are often serviceable in fixing the date of the arrival of a family in town, and are also valuable as giving the names of all the children."

VanNoy: "evidently Susannah went back to Winchester, N.H. with her children for in 1802, she and her nine children were "warned out of town"...The family went back to Rockingham, Windham co., Vt. 22 August 1803, Daniel and Susannah were summoned with children...They returned to Lyndon, Vt., then back to Town of Rockingham...1805...1806...During each of these years, they were again warned out of town...They were warned out of town in 1808 and 1810."

Biography

JWH: "His res. Vernon, Vt. Nehemiah and his wife, Lydia, were both born in Winchester, N. H., and moved to Vernon, Vt., soon after their marriage and took up a tract of unimproved land on which they resided until their death. He was taken sick May 10, 1854, had several paralytic shocks and died Oct. 10, 1854.
He was a man of great industry and thrift and with only moderate opportunities succeeded in acquiring a competence. He became a stockholder and director in one of the earliest banks organized in Brattleboro, which position he continued to hold until late in life.
He was a man of great reserve, very seldom taking his friends into his confidence, self-reliant, of good business judgement, one of the kind that goes slow but sure. A man of honor and integrity, and had the confidence of his neighbors and friends.
He governed his family after the methods of the old school. His children were to be seen and not heard. At the table and in the presence of company no conversation by them was allowed. Familiarity with parentw would have been a serious misdemeanor. Reverence and respect for elders and superiors were cardinal virtues. This was largely a custom of the time rather than a personal peculiarity, but in such marked contrast with the habits of today as to be worthy of this passing notice. But, notwithstanding what may be regarded as too great strictness, every one of his large family developed good and strong characters and filled honorable places in society."

"Nehemiah HOUGHTON was an early settler in Vernon. He located on the farm now owned by his grandson S. B. HOUGHTON. His son, Major Alba HOUGHTON, was born on the old homestead. He married Thankful STEBBINS, of this town, where he spent his life. He was a major in the militia, and an upright man. He died in 1873. His wife lives in Worcester, Mass., with her son, C. C. JWH: "He spent his early life in Windsor, Vt., and after his marriage he settled in Linden, Caledonia Co., N.Y(CJV: Lyndon, VT). He next moved to what is now named Houghton, Allegheny Co., N.Y.... where he died 10, 31, 1854. In April, 1836, he bought 300 acres of land where the town of Houghton is located. He divided this land before his death between his three living sons. The south part has never been out of the possession of the Houghton family and is now owned by his great grandson, Leonard F. Houghton. When he settled here he made friends with the Indians and was often invited to meet with them in their old council house, on the bank of the Genesee river. It is said by the old residents that his counsel was always for peace, and that his kindly influence over the Indians saved the white settlers much property, and they think many lives. In all their wars they never disturbed him or any of his property. Those that remember him all say that he was a man of cheerful disposition and especially fond of children to the day of his death."⁶
