PNEUMONIA KILLS PIONEER FREIGHTER
Giles Houghton, aged 83, one of the pioneer freighters of the west, is dead at Mercy hospital in Denver, as the result of pneumonia. Mr. Houghton went to Colorado nearly fifty years ago and erected the first stamp mill ever built in Central City. He later went to Cheyenne, where he resided for many years. Mr. Houghton leaves one daughter, Mrs. Vilette Wood of 57 West Dakota street, and two sons. It is expected that his body will be brought to Cheyenne for burial.

MRS. HOUGHTON HERE IN 1967(newspaper typo), DIES AT 77.
Mrs. Lucinda N. Houghton, a pioneer resident of Cheyenne, died yesterday at the home in Denver of her daughter, Mrs. Valette Woods. The body is to be brought here to Cheyenne for interment beside that of the aged woman's husband who died here several years ago. It will arrive Saturday morning, accompanied by Mrs. Woods, and will be taken to the Gleason undertaking chapel. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock that afternoon and Mrs. Woods will return to Denver later in the day.

Mrs. Houghton was one of the first women to settle in Cheyenne, coming in 1867, the year the town was founded. She resided here until 1899.

Mr. and Mrs. Houghton were for many years among the best known residents of the city. Five children were born to them, three, Fred, Walter and Valette surviving. Mrs. Houghton was 77 years of age.⁹

He came to California across the plains in 1849, and made some money, then went back again across the Isthmus and brought his family with him over the plains. After being in California several years he separated from his wife. He married again and had one son. His descendants by Clara Townsend are 38 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren."¹³

Biography

Hamilton: In 1883, the family moved to Dakota territory, arriving at Iroquois, then walking northeast toward Clark, SD, a distance of 50 miles. On the way to Clark, he picked out the land that he and his family would settle and filed on a homestead in Rosedale township (Northwest quarter of Section 29). Two of his four sons also staked claims near their Father, all three being in what is now Rosedale township of Clark County. On April 16, 1902, Marcus was appointed Postmaster and he maintained the post office in his home until December 31st when the post office was closed. Years later, the so-called pigeon holes of the post office were found in a grainary on the Houghton homestead. Also, in 1902, Marcus married Charlotte Bills in Clark Co., SD and returned to Genesea IL. In 1915, his second wife passed away and Marcus returned to Willow Lake, SD and resided with his son Earnest until his death on August 26, 1927. Both Marcus T. and his first wife Louisa are buried in Pitrodie Cem., Pitrodie, SD. (Gravestones stand today)⁵
