Biography

JWH (quoting Wheeler): "He went from Thompson, originally a part of Killingly, Conn., to Whittingham, Vt., where he married his wife having come with her parents from some town in Massachusetts near Thompson. He moved from Whittingham to Bennington in 1779 or 1780, where he lived until his death, which was caused by exposure and over-exertion while harvesting his crops during a rainy season. He was buried at Bennington. His widow and son, James, returned to her friends in Whittingham, and later married David Cutting. She died 8,21, 1844, and was buried there."^4,6

Richard Houghton III: "some authors--notably McClanahan and J.W. Houghton-- only note the birth of one Asa⁵, the one born in 1771. Others, like Van Noy, list two. I believe that the latter is correct, and that the others have combined the two. There is clearly a birth record for two children of the same name, but of different mothers, one by Sybil in 1771 and the other by Polly in 1794. Moreover, the Asa that married Amanda Gardner had a son named Asa Bradford Houghton. Polly Bradford Jacobs was Asa⁴'s second wife, and it would have been highly unusual for Asa ⁵ to have named a son in part after his stepmother. His birthdate is verifiable from his tombstone."

JWH gives Asa b. 1771 as marrying Amanda Gardner.⁵

MA Town and VRs: "Amanda. Daughter of Robert and Hannah Green. No. 12 p. 173. but at time of this marriage was the widow of Timothy Gardner, son of John and Esther Gardner. No. 5. p. 178.
Her leading attributes were goodness of heart, mildness, and eveness of character, and love of home, with an inclination to be always there assidously engaged in her household affairs. If there was anything morally putrid, anything disloyal to moral right, about her, naught but the all sufficiency of Heaven's discerning eye could penetrate her heart so as to sift it therefrom, or make the discovery, - nothing of this shone outwardly to human observers. Her soul was the depository of nearly every beautifully appearing, if not beatific, moral excellence."⁷

JWH: "d. 1809 on the road when moving to New York. He was a mill wright, and was in partnership, putting up a mill when taken sick, and died, and partner took everything, leaving wife penniless in a new and strange country."⁵

JWH gives two identical Lyman Houghtons (same bd, dd and md. to Phoebe Hooper), one in the Ralph and one in the John line; the John line is more likely the accurate one since the Ralph line gives Lyman being born after death of father; see Lyman, in John line, son of Stephen and Lucy (Proctor) Houghton; MLM gives Lyman as son of Stephen and Lydia (Russell) Houghton in Ralph line^9,7
