BiographyRichard Houghton: "Bio of Otis-6 Houghton (1826-1889) NY/WI Posted by Rich Houghton on June 23, 1999 at 14:41:57:
OTIS BRADFORD-6 HOUGHTON
Otis Bradford Houghton (Horace Bradford-5 Asa-4 Edward-3 James-2 Ralph-1) was born in 1826 in Alexander, Genesee County, New York. He was the second son of Horace Bradford Houghton and his wife Marcia ------. Although it is unclear where the name "Otis" came from, "Bradford" was his father's middle name, and was his paternal grandmother's maiden name. Horace and Marcia probably chose it to show Otis' descent from the Pilgrim William Bradford (1590-1657), the first governor of the Plymouth Colony.
He grew up in Alexander, and sometime in the late 1840's he and his brothers turned their attentions west. His older brother Tilden moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana; Horace Eaton went to Durand, Pepin County, Wisconsin; and Harvey to Whitewater, Walworth County. Otis also went to Wisconsin, where he settled in the southeast part of the state in Walworth County. He apparently lived first in East Troy, in the county's northeast corner, where he is listed on the federal census of 1850. In 1856, he purchased thirty acres there for which he paid $900.
On 31 March 1850, he married Jane Harkness of Spring Prairie, Walworth County; Spring Prairie is the township to the immediate south of East Troy. She was born in Ohio in 1831, and may have been the daughter of James Harkness, who lived in neighboring Lafayette Township. The couple had at least one child:
i Florence Estelle b. June 1850 m. ------ Kent?
It is unclear what happened to Jane. The 1860 U.S. Census shows Otis living with a woman named Martha, who was presumably his wife at the time since they were living in the same house with a minor child. While there is no sign of Jane or of Florence Estelle, in his 1876 will Otis made a bequest to Florence Estelle so she was still alive. It may be that Jane died; or, since census records show that Florence Estelle ceased to live with Otis, that they divorced.
He married this second wife, Martha ------, around 1856. Martha was born in New York in 1837; she and Otis had one daughter:
ii Helen M[artha?] b.c. 1857 m. C.L. Walker
Otis and his family lived in Elkhorn, the Walworth county seat, from at least 1863 until around 1868. There he was elected Register of Deeds for Walworth County in 1863, a post he held until 1866. Sometime between 1860 and 1866, Martha -- like Jane -- also disappears from the records. She probably died, since census records show that their daughter Helen continued to live with Otis even after he remarried in 1866.
He married thirdly HELEN8 WEED on Monday, 19 February 1866, in Spring Prairie at the Methodist Episcopal Church; the Rev. George A. Smith of Lyons, Wisconsin, officiated. Helen was the daughter of Ezra Fairchild Weed and Susan (Tozer) Rice. She was born on 20 August 1841 in Racine City, Racine County, Wisconsin. They had four children:
+ iii Philip Weed b. [ ] December 1866 m. Lenora L. Longley
iv Susan W. b. February 1870 m. ------ Clark
v Ruby B. b. 29 June 1878 m. ------ Voos
vi Alice J. b. 6 September 1881 m. ------ Fisher
Around 1868, they moved to neighboring Spring Prairie Township where they lived just outside Spring Priaire Village. Otis was a farmer and businessman by profession, but also continued to hold civic posts. He was the Town Treasurer for Spring Prairie in 1869.
Otis died of pneumonia on Wednesday, 26 June 1889, at the Walworth County Insane Asylum in Geneva, Walworth County, Wisconsin; he was sixty-three. The Asylum, and its records, have long since disappeared, so it is impossible to determine why Otis was there at the time of his death. It was not unusual at this time for people to be committed for reasons other than what we would consider mental illness -- such as senility -- although the former cannot be ruled out.
He was buried at the Spring Prairie (Hickory Grove) Cemetery. His will, written fifteen years before his death and therefore not including any bequests to his youngest daughter, provided:
" I, Otis B. Houghton, of the town of Spring Prairie in the County of Walworth in the State of Wisconsin, being in the enjoyment of all my mental faculties, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament as follows -- that is to say --
First -- I will and direct that the expenses of my funeral and all my just debts be paid.
Second -- I will and direct that ten dollars be paid to each of my children, viz: Florence Estelle, Helen M., Philip and Susan.
Third -- I give, devise and bequeath all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate of whatsoever character or kind to my wife Helen Houghton.
Fourth -- I hereby nominate and appoint my wife Helen Houghton sole executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of November in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Six."
Although Helen commenced proceedings to probate the will, the probate file contains only her petition for probate and the executor's bond. The petition for probate lists the value of Otis' personal property at $250, and the value of his real estate at $3,000.
Helen survived her husband by many years. She lived with her daughter Alice in a rented house on Oregon Street in Burlington, Racine County, in 1900. She died of pneumonia on Friday, 30 December 1921, in Spring Prairie; she was eighty years old. She was buried in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Spring Prairie on 5 January 1922. Her rather brief will provided:
" I, Helen Houghton, of the village of Spring Prairie, County of Walworth, and state of Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this to be my last will and testament, to-wit:
First, all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be first fully paid.
Second, I give my daughter, Susan, the sum of one dollar ($1.00).
Third, I give my daughter, Alice, the sum of one dollar ($1.00).
Fourth, I give my daughter, Rubbie, the sum of one dollar ($1.00).
Fifth, I give my son, Philip, the residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to have and to hold forever.
Sixth, I nominate and appoint my son Philip Houghton to be the executor of this my last will and testament, without bonds.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of January, A.D. 1917."
On 9 January 1922, her son Philip filed a petition for the probate of her estate. The petition estimated the value of her personal property as $0, rents and profits of real estate exclusive of the homestead as $480, and the value of the real estate at $6,000. In addition, she had a debt of $350. The real estate, consisting of two parcels of land in Spring Prairie, was ultimately valued at $4,625. After deducting the funeral expenses ($485) and the total estimated debts ($475.56), the net estate available for distribution was $3,664.44. After several adjustments, the total was $3960.45 According to the terms of the will, $1 each was distributed to Alice, Susan, and Ruby, while the remainder was distributed to Philip.

HORACE BRADFORD-5 HOUGHTON

Horace Bradford Houghton (Asa-4 Edward-3 James-2 Ralph-1) was born on 28 August 1797, in Wales, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He was the youngest son of Asa Houghton and his second wife Mary "Polly" (Bradford) Jacobs. While it is unclear why his parents chose the name Horace, Bradford was his mother's maiden name. He grew up on his father's farm in Wales. From 1811 to 1814, he attended the Woodstock Academy in nearby Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut.
Sometime before 1820, he began to look west for a place to settle. He established himself in Genesee County, New York, around 1820, and was a prime mover in establishing the town of Alexander. Alexander, located along Tonawanda Creek, was one of the county's first organized towns. Horace made his first land purchase there on 10 December 1824, when he bought two acres of land from Samuel Benedict for $150. He added to that parcel on 19 November 1832, when he purchased approximately sixty rods of land from Benjamin Dutton, Jr., for $36.50. On 1 November 1849, he added another half acre to his holdings. He lived on what is now Buffalo Street. Around 1818, he married MARCIA [TILDEN?] (No. 2:5:33), most likely in Massachusetts before coming to New York. She was born in Massachusetts in 1802, although the identities of her parents are presently unknown. The couple had several children:

i Ruby M. b. 1819 m. Henry R. Montgomery
ii Tilden M. b. 1823 m. (1) Julia A. Bennett
m. (2) Susan Sarber
iii Emily T[ilden?] b.c. 1824 m. Henry Bridger
+ iv Otis Bradford b.c. 1826 m. (1) Jane Harkness
m. (2) Martha ------
m. (3) Helen Weed
v Annette M. b. 1830 m. Franklin P. Shepard
vi Eaton Horace b.c. 1835 m. ------ ------
vii Harvey b.c. 1840 m.------- ------
viii Helen Mary b.c. 1844 unm. in 1865

He was a mechanic by profession, but also served in several civic posts. He was a Justice of the Peace for twenty-eight years, and he was elected Clerk for District No. 2 of the county school district in 1830. He enjoyed a high reputation in the county, and was "regarded always as being upright." He was a very active member of the Alexander First Universalist Church. Organized in June 1833 in a frame house in Alexander, the church society was organized at the same time. At a meeting of the society on 5 May 1840, Horace was chosen Clerk. The members appointed a committee to inquire into the state and standing of the church and to establish whether the society was still a viable entity. The three men named to the committee were Samuel Goth, Earl Kidder, and Horace.
On 9 June, the committee reported that a reorganization was necessary. The committee gave the reasons as:

" 1st. A part of the [Society] records were lost.
2nd. Those which remained were quite imperfect.
3rd. It was doubtful in the minds of some of the members, of one, at least, whether the Society at first was legally organized.
4th. And even if the Society had been legally formed, its operations subsequently have not come up to the requirements of the law.
From these and other considerations it was considered the only safe way to reorganize and commence anew."
The recomendation of the committee was accepted by the Society members, whodecided to reorganize:
" Reorganization
1st. Voted that the number of trustees be three.
2d. Chose by ballot the following persons to fill the office of trustees -- viz. -- Earl Kidder, Lyman Riddle, and Horace B. Houghton. The term of office of each as determined by lot to expire as follows: Horace B. Houghton at the end of one year; Lyman Riddle two years; Earl Kidder, three years.
3rd. A constitution and profession of faith was presented and read by S. Goff and unanimously adopted.
4th. Samuel Goff was elected to the office of Clerk and Treasurer for three years.
5th. Earl Kidder and Benjamin Kent were appointed as delegates to represent the Society at the next session of the Association to be held in Alexander
the third Wednesday and Thursday of June.
6th. The meeting adjourned till the first Tuesday in June 1841."

The church membership list of that year shows almost all of the family:
Horace, Marcia, T.M., Emily T., and M. Annette.

Marcia died in Alexander on Monday, 15 August 1853; she was fifty-one. Her brief obituary in the local newspaper read: "Died in Alexander, on the 15th inst., Marcia, wife of Horace B. Houghton, Esq. aged 51 years. 'Her children shall rise up and call her Blessed.'" Her place of burial is presently unknown.

Several years later, on 7 January 1858, Horace married Mary "Polly" (Chote) Norton of nearby Attica, Wyoming County. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Rollins in Attica. She was the widow of Jesse Norton, who died on 25 May 1856. She and Horace apparently had no children.

Mary died in Boston on 27 September 1860, where she had travelled to undergo an operation for cancer; she was fifty-six. She was buried in the West Bethany Cemetery.

Horace died on Wednesday, 11 October 1865, less than a month after the death of his daughter, Annette M. Shepard; he was sixty-eight. It is unknown where he was buried. He may have been ill for a few weeks before his death, since he wrote his will a little less than three weeks before he died; or, it may be that the death of his daughter Annette gave him pause to think about the uncertainties of life — the will was written the day after her death. The text of that instrument provides:

" In the Name of God Amen. I Horace B. Houghton of the Town of Alexander in the County of Genesee and State of New York, being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament, that is to say:

First, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, I give bequeath and devise to my beloved daughter Helen Mary all my real and personal estate of every name and nature, wherever found. Likewise, I make, constitute and appoint my said daughter Helen Mary Houghton of Alexander aforesaid to be sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the 25 day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and sixty five."

No other documents, such as an inventory, appear in his probate file.

Research1794Richard Houghton III: "some authors--notably McClanahan and J.W. Houghton-- only note the birth of one Asa5, the one born in 1771. Others, like Van Noy, list two. I believe that the latter is correct, and that the others have combined the two. There is clearly a birth record for two children of the same name, but of different mothers, one by Sybil in 1771 and the other by Polly in 1794. Moreover, the Asa that married Amanda Gardner had a son named Asa Bradford Houghton. Polly Bradford Jacobs was Asa4's second wife, and it would have been highly unusual for Asa 5 to have named a son in part after his stepmother. His birthdate is verifiable from his tombstone."

JWH gives Asa b. 1771 as marrying Amanda Gardner.1

BiographyMA Town & VRs, Wales, MA: "1. Capt. Asa Houghton. Son of Asa and Polly No. 1. He lived and died on the "Houghton Place", which had been the homestead of his father. His whole soul was wont to expand with those nobler qualities of humanity, justice, honesty, kindliness, hospitality, industry, nevertheless he had one failing which the intended faithfulness and accurateness of this Record require to be noted, that was his accustomed liberal use of the inebrieting beverage, not that he drank to intoxication, often, if ever, but he partook of the poison too frequently and too freely for his own benefit. But one foible, tho lamentably bad, in a cluster of virtues, render one not despicable, but pitiable."11
