NoteJohn Wesley Houghton’s Introduction Letter to his 1912 Houghton Genealogy (sent to Houghtons to solicit Houghton family histories) (first part is only a fragment):

…the publication of the genealogy of the Hough-
…introduced by the printing of the pamphlet pub-
…the descent of the family from Herverus, who came
…with William the Conqueror, down to the present time. A satis-
…who settled in Bolton, Mass., about the year
…nearly all that is known of John and Ralph and
…trying to connect the living Houghtons with

…born between the years 1815 and 1915?
…give the name of his grandfather or great-grandfather, I can generally find his place in the family …I have already succeeded in doing this in several instances.

This work entails an almost endless amount of correspondence, and desiring to make the work as complete as possible, I bespeak the hearty co-operation of every member of the family to who this matter may come.

If each one will burden his conscience with an obligation to write to me promptly, giving all the facts possible, he will place me and the family at large, under lasting obligations. I desire the following information concerning each individual, and these instructions should be kept before the writer when preparing answer in order that no item may be omitted.

1. Name           5. Residence                    9. Death of husband or wife.
2. Name of Parents     6. Date of Marriage               10. Occupation.
3. Date of Birth     7. To Whom                    11. Biographical.
4. Place of Birth     8. Birth of husband and Wife

Begin with your great-grandfather, (and as much farther back as you can) give all of the above items concerning him; then his children; then children’s children. If you know your great grand-father’s brothers, or your grandfather’s brothers, follow the descendants of each one down as you did your own line of descent. Treat your brothers the same way.

Do not conclude that because you know little or nothing about your ancestry that it is not worth while to give your own family record. Many times I have the ancestry and the very thing I am after is the person’s own record and that of his descendants down to the youngest child. I want all this if you cannot give much concerning your ancestry, but I want all you know in both directions. I enclose a blank which will help you in making up your record and if more room is needed use blank paper.

Please study the instructions carefully that no omissions be made. I would like also the address of any other Houghtons you may know. I have so much writing to do that I do not always acknowledge the receipt of letters unless there has been some omission requiring it. I am no less grateful however and in time you will hear from me again. I cannot tell you how soon the work will be finished. About fifty pages are already in type but the gathering of genealogies from all over the United States is a slow process and it will take probably several months longer. I would be glad to include every Houghton family in America, and if I do not it shall be no fault of mine.

My observations give me reason to be proud of our race and to those who share with me in a pardonable pride of ancestry, the book will be invaluable. The relatives have generally shown a commendable interest in my work and are very anxious to aid me in every possible way, for which I am profoundly grateful. Thanking you in advance for any assistance you may be able to give me and hoping to hear from you soon whether you may think you have anything of importance to communicate or not I am with kindest regards and best wishes, (in some degree)

                                   Your Cousin

ResearchNov 12, 1924Houghton Genealogy criticism: Boston Transcript, 11/12/1924: W.B.B.N. 'The Houghton Genealogy seems, in its early portion anyway, a mixup of families and names. I have found that it interprets numerous names incorrectly, it seems to ignore all the probate records, misplaces numerous families and makes other errors. For instance, it gives a man born 1682 as a veteran of the Revolutionary War.20'
Notablethe author of the first major genealogy of John and Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA; includes 8590 individuals (all in present HSP database)
BiographyJWH: "He studied in the Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, O., and in Baldwin University, Berea, O. Graduated in the classical course in the latter in 1860, and in medicine the same year, having kept up his medical studies by attending lectures in the winters of his college course; A.M. 1871. Began practice of his profession in Wellington soon after graduation... Dr. Houghton practiced his profession about 14 years, when impaired health compelled a change of occupation. Since 1863 he had owned and conducted a drug, book and stationary store, until April, 1909. From 1876 to 1885 he owned and published and, with his wife, edited the Wellington Enterprise. Was organizer, and manager of the Bell Telephone exchange 18 years. Has filled various municipal offices including Mayor and Justice and President of School Board, and positions of responsibility in church work. Personal characteristics: decided opinions; keen moral sense, admitting of no prevarications; almost totally lacking those instincts of policy that safe-guard self interest; liberal to prodigality in dealing with his fellow men, and charitable to every one's faults and weaknesses but his own. His uncommon insight into mechanical intricacies and skill in locating and relieving trouble is an aptitude which is turned to practical account in his business as an optician, which he has practiced many years. His pronounced literary tastes are in the realm of the philosophic and logical, rather than the imaginative or descriptive. Disposed to get to the foundation of things and requiring proof or good reasons for conclusions. To study in his company is not to find easy reading. It must be worth while to engage his time or attention. His friends are not hastily chosen, but once in the inclosure of his confidence are likely to abide there. The seriousness of his reading is no indication of his hearty enjoyment of humor and social life, to which he is a good contributor, and his domestic virtues dominate all other."; Barber Gen.: "He practiced medicine for 12 years, proprietor of drug and book store 43 years, editor and proprietor of the Wellington Enterprise nine years, founder of the Bell Telephone Exchange 18 years; has been mayor, justice, president of school board, and held many other positions of trust and responsibility, and is still in active practice as an optician in Wellington, Ohio."

Optician on death certificate.21,22

Contributncompiled, in his 1912 Houghton Genealogy, the first systematic compilation of the Houghton surname in America. His data was the original dataset input into the current Houghton Surname Project. His Houghton Genealogy is a tour de force, especially given the communication challenges for when it was written.

One of the most conscientious, unselfish and sympathetic of women, and for most of her life gave her time and strength to the care of the sick, especially to her mother, who was for many years an invalid. Life had for her very little of ease or comfort or the satisfactions that belong to women, except what would come from the consciousness of duty done in the noblest Christian spirit."5

BiographyJWH: "Mr. Norton came to Penfield with his parents in 1841, was converted in the winter of 1843-1844, united with the Methodist Church. Was successively licensed to exhort, and to preach, and was later ordained. Preached in Chatham about 20 years every other Sabbath, and other places alternate Sabbaths. His services were much in demand for marriages and funerals. Was justice of peace 38 years, and settled nearly all cases brought before him without trial; was many years assessor; was an abolitionist in anti-slavery days, and later active in the temperance movement. Narrowness, superstition and bigotry were foreign to his character, and with limited opportunities he, by an apparently natural process of evolution, kept well to the front on all religious and theological questions. Nature gave him a good voice, pleasant manner, and he was regarded as a host in debate. He was original in method, and his sermons and addresses were thoughtful, instructive and stimulating."; Barber Gen.: son of Hiram Norton and Lucy Green5,2

BiographyJWH: "Dau. of William and Aurilla (Lindsley) Hayes. From childhood she manifested a passionate fondness for literature. Had a clear, concise, forcible style. Whether in descriptio or argument, her word-painting satisfies the instinct for color and beauty, and the logic is not only convincing but unanswerable. She was assistant editor of the Wellington Enterprise nine years, to which she contributed the larger share of copy. Is a member of the Ohio Woman's Press Club, and of another of high order from its origin in 1885. Served as corresponding secretary of the Soldier's Aid Society in Civil War, of Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and of both Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Societies from their beginning. Thoroughly conscientious and unselfish, she esteems no sacrifice too great by which she may be of service to others. Of constitution never robust, she has nevertheless accomplished prodigies of labor in the care of the aged and the young who have shared her home, and in co-operation with her husband in his work.

A Woman of the Century By Frances Elizabeth Willard, Mary Ashton Rice Livermore, p. 393:
Houghton, Mrs. Mary Hayes, journalist, born in Penfield, Lorain County, Ohio, 26th March 1837. Her maiden name was Hayes. Her parents were Western Reserve pioneers from New England, whose ancestry was Norman-French. She was the oldest daughter of a large family. She was in childhood of a nervous temperament, slight in figure, active, energetic with a strong memory, an omnivorous reader, and always a student. Her school-life was interrupted by ill-health, but her reading and study went on covering a large range in history, philosophy and literature. In the Civil War and its excitements her family had full share. There was a prodigal expenditure of strength and sympathy, resulting in broken health, but no abatement of industry. She became the wife of J. W. Houghton, A.M., M.D., in 1874. Two years after, he became proprietor of the Wellington Ohio, "Enterprise," in which with his wife as editorial assistant, they continued nine years, when it was sold on account of failing health. From the age of eighteen years Mrs. Houghton had wirtiiten more or less for publication, chiefly upon current topics, and her connection with the press served to give variety, breadth and finish to her composition. She has the the journalistic faculty and reportorial instinct in a marked degree, selecting, discarding, condensing, revising and editing with swift judgment. The bulk of her literary work has been anonymously written, and some of it has been widely copied. Impelled by anxiety for an overtasked and frail husband, the wife became familiar with his many lines of business, private, professional and official, and with many years of efficient service proves that "woman's work"may cover a wide range without impairing her womanliness, her tast for domestic life or her skill in feminine accomplishments. With organizations religious, reformatory, and literary, she is actively identified, and she cooperates with all that will elevate humanity. She is president of a woman's club which for years has done excellent work, and is also a member of the Ohio's Women's Press Club. An enthusiatic student of sociology, she aids the aspiring and arouses all who know her to higher ambitions and more exalted views of the real purposes of life. Her home is in Wellington, Ohio, and her energies and sympathies are now chiefly occupied in repeating earlier experience, comforting bereaved old age and caring for motherless childhood, in which labor of love her nature finds large compenstion.12

BiographyJWH: "Fremont dailies of that time contained columns of tribute to the man who for forty-two years had been the efficient and beloved superintendent of their public schools. 'Except on the occasion of the passing of ex-President Rutherford B. Hayes, there was never such universal demonstration of sorrow and respect. All classes, all creeds and professions were united in one bond of sympathy and grief for this man who lay in the wonderful majesty of death, called home in the very midst of an active life, which in its worthiness and beauty of purpose was ideal. Flags at half mast, court adjourned, shcolls suspended for three days, the Central High School building in sombre drapings where the body lay in state, and a thousand children in procession laid their offering of a flower or a sprig of green, as they passed. Following these, members of their families and the general public were permitted this farewell to one who in his life so truly sympathized with and loved and served them. The floral tributes were of great beauty and profusion. Stores and factories closed the afternoon of the funeral, which was held at the church where for forty years Mr. Ross had been Sunday school superintendent.' The Masonic order, the Bar Association of Sandusky County, of which the deceased was a charter member, were represented. The Alumni Association and the teachers of the school were among those assigned space in the church with the family and relatives. From columns of appreciation this is quoted: 'His tests for any public measure were: Does it lessen the burdens of the poor?' A bronze tablet placed in the hall facing entrance to the high shcool, and an alcove named for him in Birchard library, of which he was a trustee, are among the more enduring monuments to his memory."; Barber Gen.: son of Joseph Ross and Mark Harkness3

ObituaryCharles Chandler Houghton - He was born in Canaan, Essex, VT., on the 25th day of April 1825, and after receiving his education in the schools of his native town, he started out to earn a living. The year was now 1848, and at just 23 years of age, Charles Chandler Houghton, would arrive in Worcester, Mass. In 1853, C.C. Houghton & Co., began, manufacturing boots and shoes, at Lincoln Square. In 1858, his brother, Alba Houghton, Jr., would join his firm, in partnership. There were many other partners over the years: Samuel R. Heywood; H.B. Adams; and W. E. Warren. In 1884, his son, Frank Newton Houghton, would enter the large factory of his fathers manufacturing business. By 1889, the firm consisted of C.C. Houghton, Frank N. Houghton, and Edgar W. Warren; and was now located in Houghton's block, corner of Front Street and Salem Square, where Mr. Houghton, owned the brick block, occupied by the firm, which was five stories high, with four stores on the ground floor. Mr. Houghton, was a large investor in real estate, owning large amounts of realty as far back as 1870. Mr. Houghton, was the oldest director of the First National Bank. In politics, he was always a Republican, with prohibition leanings. He was an Alderman from Ward 4 in 1880 and 1881, under Frank H. Kelly. In May 1890, Mr. Houghton, with his wife, and two of their daughters, made an extended trip to Europe, traveling in Syria, a considerable part of the time. Just three years later, in 1893, Mr. Houghton, would retire.

Charles Chandler Houghton, a pioneer in the manufacture of boots and shoes would die, at his home, 402 Grafton Street, on the 6th day of March 1901, in Worcester, Mass., the town he had called his home for some 53 years. His death would remove one of the best known men of Worcester, whose success was brought about by persistent hard work. He had married Miss Elvira L. Newton, of Vernon, VT., in 1855, and Worcster, was always their home. She, along with their four children survived him. Mrs. H. L. Whithed, living in Grand Forks, N.D; Mrs. Frank L. Dean, Worcester; Miss Lavinia Houghton, who lived at home; and Frank N. Houghton, living on Grafton Street, who was interested in the business in Sommersworth, N.H.

Charles C. Houghton, would be laid to rest in the beautiful "Rural Cemetery". He would later be moved to the historic "Hope Cemetery," upon the completion of the Houghton Mausoleum, where he would come to his final rest, among the many men and women, who had shaped Worcester's history. There, in the Houghton Mausoleum, which is filled now, with the many souls of his beloved family. May they all be blessed in peace...

The Houghton Mausoleum ~
Designed as a minature Gothic Chapel, was erected in 1901 or 1902, by Troy White Granite Co., which had offices on East Worcester Street, from 1900 to 1910.22
BiographyJWH: "He moved to Vernon, Vt., with his parents when he was six years old, where he remained working on the farm until 20 years of age. He then went West working at his trade of shoemaker, traveling in New York, Ohio and Kentucky. The writer has a very pleasant recollection of him when on his return to the East he visited our home. He was one of the most attractive men in manner and person I had ever seen. When 24 years of age he went to Worcester, Mass., and in 1853 started in the manufacture of boots and shoes and built up a large factory and business in which he was very capable. He retired from business in 1895 after a most successful career of 42 years. He d. 3,6,1901. They traveled in this and foreign countries. His wife was a native of Worcester...He was a modest, unassuming man, yet occupied many positions of responsibility and turst. He was regarded by his associates and employees as always fair and just in his business dealings. He was for more than twenty-two years a director of the First National Bank of Worcester, and his associates said of him at his death, "that he was punctual and courteous in the performance of all his duties. His wise counsel and great business sagacity were always at the disposal of the bak and were of the highest service to all interested in its welfare. His genial disposition, kind hear and high character rendered association with him agreeable and inspiring. His life, public and private, was most exemplary. Though somewhat advanced in years, the wellspring of youth in his heart never dried, and he was always in sympathy with whatever would promote the best interests of social and moral progress."

Townsend, C.D., Index of Gazetter of Windham Co., VT, p. 94: "C.C. Houghton, Son of Alba Worcestor [sic], MA 1884, p. 304-44"

Bouley: Samuel Richardson Hoar [Heywood] became a partner of C.C. Houghton in 1864 manufacturing shoes and boots under the firm name of Houghton and Heywood, and continued the partnership for three years. In 1873 Oscar Phillips was admitted to partnership, and the business continued under the firm name of S.R. Heywood and Company.

Hurd, Worcester Co. MA Hx:
In 1853 C. C. Houghton began the manufacture of boots at Lincoln Square. In 1857 he admitted his brother, Alba Houghton, into the partnership of C. C. Houghton & Co., and continued with him until 1864, when Alba Houghton retired. In 1864 the partnership of Houghton & Heywood was formed and was dissolved in 1867. H. B. Adams was then admitted, and the firm of Houghton & Adams continued for one year.

Mr. Houghton was alone until 1871, when Wm. Warren became a partner, the firm-name being C. C. Houghton & Co. Mr. Warren retired in 1884. At present the firm consists of C. C. Houghton, F. N. Houghton and E. W. Warren, and is known as C. C. Houghton & Co., which is situated in Houghton’s Block, corner of Front St. and Salem Square.23,24,25

ObituaryElvira Lorena (Newton) Houghton -
Was a devoted member, as was her husband, Charles Chandler Houghton, and also their children, at the First Universalist Church of Worcester, Mass., where Elvira and Charles, both served as elected Deacon's. Also, Mrs. Elvira L. Houghton, served for many years in, "The Mothers' Sewing Class" which was organized in 1893, to provide work for mothers, and also aid the society, in providing clothing. Elvira L. Houghton, was in charge of this organization until 1907.

And so sadly it was, on the 16th day of August 1911, that the widow of, Charles Chandler Houghton, would die, aged 76 years, 3 months, and 22 days; in her home at, 402 Grafton Street, Worcester, Mass. On August 19, 1911, she would be tenderly laid to rest in the Houghton Mausoleum, at Hope Cemeter, in Worcester, Mass., next to her beloved husband, Charles Chandler Houghton, and which is filled now, with the many souls of their family. May they forever rest in eternal peace...
