W. D. Houghton:
In September 1864, Henry Houghton, Major Albert Hough-ton‘s younger brother, entered into service at the age of only 19, as a private in the 176th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. Although quickly promoted to First Sergeant and then to Second Lieute-nant, he was badly wounded in Nashville, Tennessee, and on March 3, 1865, died of pneumonia.^4,5,6

JWH: "Had the following Civil War record: 'Entered service in 176th Regt., Ohio Infantry, as private, Sept., 1864. Served with the Army of the Cumberland, under command of General Geo. H. Thomas. Stationed with regiment at Headquarters, Nashville, Dec., 1864, when besieged by the Confederate forces under Gen. Hood. He was promoted successively to first sergeant and second lieutenant. He died in army hospital at Nashville March 3, 1865, of pneumonia, and his body interred in Wellington Cemetery."^7,8

JWH: "A very bright scholar and more than ordinary intellectual ability. At the age of seventeen years he had an attack of pleurisy, resulting in the loss of one lung and making him an invalid for life. He so far recovered that he could do bookkeeping and office work, and for many years was a very efficient drug clerk in the employee of the writer [John Wesley Houghton]. His was one of the sweetest, purest spirits, and in conduct and character was regarded as very near perfection. After years of suffering, which he bore with unusual patience, he went to his reward 12,23, 1899."³

She was born May 06, 1843 in OH, and died Jun 11, 1875 in Ransom township, Hillsdale Co, MI. He married (2) HARRIET M HOUGHTON Jan 1876 in Ransom township, Hillsdale Co, MI, daughter of ASA HOUGHTON and ANN KNOWLTON. She was born Apr 04, 1856 in MI, and died Oct 09, 1894 in Millbrook, Wheatland twp, Mecosta Co, MI. Graves He married (3) IRENE BELL MILLER Apr 21, 1897 in Edmore, Montcalm Co, MI. From Sharon Holzhausen; "Charles was married 3 times. The first, Mary, the second was Hattie, ('Houghton', and possible sisters). Hattie also committed suicide and I believe this happened because Charles fooled around with their housekeeper at the time and she became pregnant. After Hattie's suicide, the housekeeper (Irene Miller) became Charles third wife. Charles had two children from his first marriage, three children from his second marriage, and four children from his third marriage. My grandfather was one of those children. Charles F, 20 yrs old, and his brother, Leander R., 39 yrs, enrolled in Co. D on January 19, 1864. They were in the same Infantry and company. It was told that Charles carried a picture of his mother, in his chest pocket, during the war and that it saved his life, one day, when he was shot at and the bullet hit the picture. Whether it is true or not, it fun to imagine it was." Muster Discharge Jeannine Byard discovered that Charles was an Inventor.
