Elisabeth Houghton of Washington, a former member of the board of goernors of the American Red Cross who was appointed in 1971 by President Nixon as a trustee of the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, died Saturday of cancer at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
She was a daughter of Alanson Bigelow Houghton, Ambassador to Germany and the Court of St. James's, and the former Adelaide Wellington. She graduated from Lady Margeret's College, Oxford University.
Miss Houghton was a member of the executie comittee of the Washington Cathedral Foundation and of the governing board of the National Cathedral School for Girls, both of Washington.
Suriving are a brother, Amory Houghton of Corning, N.Y., former Ambassador to France and former chairman of the Corning Glass Works, and a sister, Mrs. Eleanor H. Cole of New York.

Bom Sept. 14, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of William H. Bixby and Stella Logan (Fresch) Bixby. Survivors include three sons, Charles G. Houghton Jr., Douglas B. Houghton and Peter R. Houghton; three grandchildren, Corbin, Maizie and Tasha T. Houghton; one great grandchild, Gabriel M. Houghton, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be today at St. Peter Episcopal Church, St. Louis. Memorial contributions may be made to Wellness Community, 10425 Old Olive Road, St. Louis, MO 63141.

BiographyLike the Encyclopædia Britanica, Muzak is another of the profitable enterprises of shrewd ex-Manhattan Ad Man William B. (Benton & Bowles) Benton, 50, now Democratic Senator from Connecticut. He bought the seven-year-old Muzak company in 1941, after a succession of owners had lost millions trying to make a go of it. To run Muzak, Benton hired handsome, go-getting Harry E. Houghton, another ex-adman, and he turned the trick by convincing industrialists that music improves workers' morale and efficiency. Houghton quadrupled the number of Muzak's customers, brought it from a near loss to a tidy but unreported profit. Muzak provides hardly any direct service to the customer. Instead, it sells the Muzak concession to individuals in different cities and takes a 10% share of their gross from charges of $35 a month and up for the service.
