BiographyCindy White Houghton: His father (Albert Charles II was named after an uncle since his father was Dr. Henry Spencer) was an actor, who went by Bud (he didn't like being called Albert either). Bud had a small part in Bye Bye Birdie, which was filming at the time Grace was pregnant with Charlie, which is why they were down there instead of in Carmel or Monterey. He played a Russian spy since he was fluent in Russian, he's in maybe 8 or 10 minutes of the movie and his part gets cut sometimes when the film is shown on TV. I recorded it once for the kids and his part wasn't in it... (BTW, Bud was fluent in four or five other languages, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, and I think maybe Italian and/or French, all as a result of having a series of foreign tutors and the family having Chinese servants while he grew up in China.) Bud and Grace divorced when Charlie was two...Albert was living in Hollister, CA at the time of his father's death in March, 1975. He was issued a social security card in New York. He moved to southern California in 1960 & then to Hollister. He was a retired radio broadcaster for various stations in southern California. He was stricken with a sudden illness & died at his home at the age of 63.

ObituaryOct 13, 2013William Pringle Houghton William Pringle Houghton, 97, of Canandaigua, died Sept. 15, 2013. For six decades, he promoted architectural preservation, appreciation of antique craftsmanship and the conservation of open land. Born in 1916 in Plainfield, N.J., he pursued an engineering degree at Rochester Institute of Technology (then Mechanics Institute). For 20 years, he supervised automotive manufacture at Rochester Products (GM), as well as naval engine production during World War II. During his first week in Rochester, he answered a classified for a room. The owner's daughter, Marie Burgert, a kindred unconventional spirit, answered the door. Bill fell in love, by his telling, at first sight. He and Marie spent 53 years together until her death in 1987. In 1948, they bought an abandoned Greek revival house overlooking a serene valley near Canandaigua. It boasted original wallpaper, three fireplaces and a spurious history as a depot on the underground railroad. It lacked plumbing, electricity, heat or water. A friend, aghast, remarked, "What in God's name do you want that old place for?" The name stuck. Bill and Marie lovingly restored Old Place to its 19th-century glory. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1955, they left city jobs to open Old Place Antiques; thereafter, they restored numerous other historic upstate homes. Bill was among the first locally to place a conservation easement on his property, thereby preserving its natural beauty and character as an agricultural homestead. He has become an inspiration for others. Vigorously middle-aged until 90, after decades helping others, he lately depended for stellar quality of life on neighbors, friends, family and present and past caregivers, notably Tiffany Pollot, Amanda Tuttle and Janice Lavoie. He was sustained by the love and support of his amazing Grimble Road community, especially by Shirley and Dick Delong, Jack and Rhea Duel, Mark and Ginny Clark and foremost - with his family's gratitude beyond words - Bill and Diane Lipnickey. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Charlotte Houghton and son-in-law Gilbert Friedman; closest friend and partner in adventure, Patti Simmons; dear nieces and nephew, Elizabeth Mueller, Mary Motte Hall and Peter Engelking; their spouses, David Barnes and Connie Engelking; great-nieces and -nephews; and their children. Bill was beloved by so many; we will miss him deeply. A memorial will follow.

A memorial service will be held Friday for William M. Houghton of Bedford, a Harvard-educated engineer who was a foundry worker and oil burner salesman before becoming a researcher at United Shoe Machinery Co. in Beverly. Mr. Houghton died of congestive heart failure Sept. 18 in Emerson Hospital in Concord at the age of 96.

He was born in Manchester-by-the-Sea. "From the time when I was a boy and liked more than anything to make things with my hands, I expected to grow up and be some sort of engineer," Mr. Houghton wrote in the 50th anniversary report of his Harvard class of 1922. "I expected to be president some day, if not of the United States, then at least of some company, General Motors, say."

After graduation, he spent a summer in Europe, "thereby putting off until the fall the day when I would have to give up those pleasant long summer vacations and my sheltered silver-spoon-in-the mouth adolescence and get down to the business of finding out what life was really all about."

He entered the apprenticeship program of the Bucyrus Erie Co. and became a "helper's helper," shoveling sand in the firm's Milwaukee foundry. "Yes, life definitely had changed," he wrote.

He later helped assemble a huge strip mine shovel for the company in the Southern Illinois coal fields, before leaving Bucyrus to come "back East," where he was an engineering instructor at Harvard University before joining the Armstrong Cork Co. in Lancaster, Pa.

The Depression years were tough on him. "In 1932, the specter of unemployment, which had been breathing down my neck for years, tapped me on the shoulder," he wrote. "The boss called me in his office and wept on my shoulder."

He returned to Boston, where he was co-owner of a school that trained mechanics for diesel trucks. Later he joined the Gilbert and Barker Co., a manufacturer of boilers in Springfield, where, in 1938, "once again my shoulder was wept on and my livelihood cut off," he wrote.

For a time, he sold the company's oil burners door-to-door on a commission basis, but, "though sometimes interesting," he wrote, selling "was highly distasteful to me and most unprofitable.

"In middle age it dawned on me (1) I wasn't going to be president, and (2) more importantly. I didn't want to be," he wrote in the 25th anniversary report of his class at Harvard.

He became an engineer in the research department of United Shoe Machinery Co., in Beverly until his retirement in 1964.

An avid sailor, he was a longtime resident of Marblehead, where he wrote:

"From my desk I can see most of the harbor, a brilliant blue between its snow-covered banks. One small sailboat drives down it before the wind, her skipper, probably half-frozen, but happy. We find sailing fascinating too, but not that fascinating."

He leaves his wife, Elizabeth B. (Richards); three daughters, Martha H. Starr of Washington, Audrey H. Duane of Dalton, N.H., and Jane H. Stephenson of Marblehead; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Carleton- Willard Village in Bedford. Burial is private.

I write to request your assistance in the matter of a painting on extended loan to the Davis Museum at Wellesley College.

The painting, by the artist Frederick Porter Vinton (1846-1911), is a portrait of William Stevens Houghton who was a trustee of Wellesley College (in whose memory his children Elizabeth Goodrich Houghton and Clement Stevens Houghton named Houghton Chapel, dedicated in 1999 and which still stands on campus).

The painting was loaned to Wellesley in 1992 by one William M. Houghton—long prior to my arrival at the Davis.

Wellesley College has prioritized the renovation of the Davis Museum's HVAC system, a key mechanical tool that supports the safe stewardship of our collections for posterity. The building will close on December 18, 2022 for construction and reopen in early February 2024.

During this closure period, our facilities and collections will be inaccessible; most of our holdings will be removed to off-site storage. We must abide by the requirements of our insurer and resolve all extended loans. I am trying to locate the donor, William M. Hougton, or a lineal descendent to him, to resolve the matters of ownership and disposition. Are you able to help?

He was born in Boston, • attended St. George’s School in Newport, R.I., and was graduated from Harvard in 1924.
From 1934-1936, he ' sewed as editor and publisher of The Writer mag- ; azine.
Mr. Houghton has lived in Nevada for many years where he was active in mine development and politics, and he served a term in the Nevada legislature.
He worked actively in many community endeavors in Reno and was named “Man of the Year” ' by the Reno Corps of the Salvation Army.
He had published numerous magazine articles . and was author of a comprehensive study of the Great Basin region, which will be published in book form in December under the title, “A Trace of Desert Waters.”
Writing and travel were his main interests in the past 10 years as he traveled to Europe and Africa.

He leaves his wife, Edda (Kreiner), whom he married on June 20, 1939; a son, John Houghton of Reno; three daughters, Catherine of California, Linda of Los Angeles and Monica Houghton of Cambridge; a brother. William M. Houghton of Marblehead: a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Martyr of Old Lyme, Conn, and a grandchild.
