Deceased Name: WALTER E. HOUGHTON, 78, SCHOLAR Walter Edwards Houghton, 78, an internationally recognized Victorian scholar, editor and professor emeritus at Wellesley College, died of viral pneumonia Monday in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Houghton was awarded a doctor of humane letters degree at Wellesley in 1976. He was the only man to receive an honorary degree from the school. Born in Stamford, Conn., he graduated from Hotchkiss School in 1920 and received his Ph.B., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University. He taught 11 years at Harvard before going to Wellesley in 1942. Earlier, he had taught at The Hill School and at Phillips Academy in Andover. He retired in 1969 as the Sophie C. Hart professor of English after 27 years at Wellesley. After retirement, he editor in chief of "The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900," which identifies more than 10,000 writers of some 84,000 articles to British monthlies and quarterlies during the Victorian period when anonymity was a self-imposed rule for authors. At the time of his death, Dr. Houghton was involved in the fourth volume. His interest in the work grew out of his research of "The Victorian Frame of Mind, 1830-1870," a book for which he earned the Christian Gauss Award in 1957 from the Senate of Phi Beta Kappa. He also was author of "The Poetry of Clough: An Essay in Revaluation" (1963), "The Art of Newman's Apologia' " (1948), "The Formation of Thomas Fuller's Holy and Profane States' " (1938) and numerous articles in literary journals. He had been working on a new book about Matthew Arnold. Dr. Houghton was named a Guggenheim fellow in 1965-1966, a fellow of the American Assn. of Arts and Sciences in 1964, a Ford Fellow in 1953-54 and a Sterling Fellow of Yale University in 1930-31.
He had been honorary president of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals since 1969 and had specialized in 19th Century literature for several decades; before that on the 17th Century. He lived in Wellesley and Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard. He leaves his wife, Esther (Lowrey) Rhoads Houghton of Bala-Cynwyd, Penn; two daughters, Nancy Brown of Grand View-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Esther Cidis of Huntington, N.Y; and four grandchildren.

Biography

Dr. Walter Edwards Houghton, the only man to receive an honorary degree from Wellesley College. This leader among Victorian scholars, whose work brought international recognition to Wellesley College, was born in Stamford, CT, on September 21, 1904. Houghton graduated from The Hotchkiss School, a boarding school in the foothills of the Connecticut Berkshires, in 1920. He then enrolled at Yale, where he earned Ph.B., M.A. and Ph.D degrees, the last of which was granted to him in 1931. As an undergraduate at Yale, he was elected to the Skull and Bones.

He held teaching positions at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, and at The Hill School, in Pottstown, PA. He then joined the Harvard faculty teaching literature and history. Following 11 years of teaching at Harvard, Houghton became a member of the faculty at Wellesley College in 1942.

At Wellesley, Houghton held the Sophie C. Hart Professorship of English. As a teacher, he exuded his fascination with Victorian ideas, attitudes and values. His first book, "The Art of Newman's 'Apologia", was a scholarly examination of John Henry Cardinal Newman's "Apologia pro Vita Sua". Jane Carman '46, closed her review of the book by noting, "The reader cannot close the book without a sense of having been absorbed in an exciting literary exploration."

The undertaking for which Houghton is best known was The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900 (University of Toronto Press). With his wife, Associate Editor Esther Lowrey Rhoads Houghton, he developed "The Index" as a system for the identification of authors, and the location of articles, originally published in 19th century British periodicals, covering topics including literature, religion, politics, social science, political economy, women's writing, archaeology, science and the arts.

Houghton won the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award for his book "The Victorian Frame of Mind, 1830 - 1870" (Yale University Press, 1963). Among his other written works were "The Poetry of Clough: An Essay in Revaluation" (1963), "The Formation of Thomas Fuller's 'Holy and Profane States" (1938), "Victorian Poetry and Poetics" (co-authored with G.R. Stange) and many literary journal articles. He was named a Sterling Fellow of Yale University in 1931, a Ford Fellow in 1954 and a Guggenheim Fellow in 1966. He served as President of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals.

Houghton teaching class

Professor Houghton retired from Wellesley College in 1969 after a tenure of 27 years. He continued his work on "The Index" and was working on a book that examined the writing of Matthew Arnold. As part of Wellesley College's 100th Anniversary celebration, Houghton was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 1976.

Walter Houghton, who resided in Wellesley and on Martha's Vineyard, died on April 11, 1983, of pneumonia.

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Esther (Lowrey) Rhoads Houghton, 85, former associate editor of a periodicals index, who died Feb. 22 in a nursing home in Old Tappan, N.J. after a brief illness.

Born in Bala, Pa., Mrs. Houghton was a resident of Wellesley for more than 30 years and previously lived in Cambridge. In 1984, she moved to Huntington, N.Y.

Mrs. Houghton received a bachelor's degree in French literature from Bryn Mawr College in 1924. She completed work for a master's degree at Bryn Mawr in 1929 and was awarded the Mary Elizabeth Garrett European Fellowship.

She and her late husband, Walter Edwards Houghton, a professor at Harvard and Wellesley colleges and a Victorian scholar, were the editors of The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodical Literature 1824 to 1900.

In 1945, Mrs. Houghton was a founder of the Wellesley Cooperative Clothing Exchange and was a volunteer with the Wellesley Consumer's Cooperative.

She leaves two daughters, Nancy Brown of Grandview on the Hudson, N.Y. and Esther Cidis of Huntington, N.Y; and four grandchildren.

STAMFORD, Conn., Jan. 11— Lady Cumming, the former Nancy Acheson Houghton of Shippan Point, wife of Sir Duncan Cumming, the last British chief administrator of Eritrea, died yesterday in Lon don after a long illness. She was 64 years old.

Lady Cumming was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Edwards Houghton. She prepared at Rosemary Hall for Vassar and returned to teach there after receiving her degree in 1927. She was mar ried in 1930 to the then Mr. Cumming, a member of the Sudan Political Service.

Major General Sir Duncan Cumming K.B.E., C.B.E., O.B.E. (10 August 1903 – 10 December 1979), was a twentieth century British colonial administrator. m 1930, Nancy Acheson Houghton (d 1971). Cumming attended Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire and Caius College, Cambridge, where he read history. Whilst at Cambridge he played rugby for England in 1925. From Cambridge Cumming joined the Sudan Political Service. In 1941 he was sent to Eritrea when it was captured during the second world war, to establish British military administration. He became Chief Administrator of Cyrenaica in 1942. In 1945 he became Chief Civil Affairs Officer, Middle East as a Major-General responsible to the War Office, 1945–48. From 1948 the military administrations were transferred to the Foreign Office under his influence. He became Governor of Kordofan Province, Sudan, 1949 and Deputy Civil Secretary to the Sudan Government, 1950–51.[1] During, and after, the war he was responsible for the civil administration of all of the occupied Italian Colonies in the Middle East, of which Eritrea was one.[2] Subsequently he worked for BOAC as managing director of Associated Companies Ltd, 1955–59 and Adviser on African Affairs, 1959–64.[3] He was also a biographer of the traveller Mansfield Parkyns.
Cumming was knighted in 1953.[1] He was the honorary treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society (1971–74) and president (1974–77). He was president of the Society for Libyan Studies (1969–74).[4] He was a member of the Mount Everest Foundation 1971–77 and the British Institute in Eastern Africa.

Biography

Ann Schlee FRSL (born 1934) is an English novelist. She won the annual Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for The Vandal (1979), a once-in-a-lifetime book award judged by a panel of British children's writers.[1] She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1997.
As a child, Ann Schlee was brought up in the United States by her mother and grandparents until the end of the Second World War.[3] Afterward she began to settle in Cairo, Egypt, with her parents. They later moved to Sudan and Eritrea. Inter alia she attended boarding school in England and later studied at Somerville College, Oxford. Schlee has spent much of her writing career in London being quite active in the 1970s to the 1990s. Awards and honours The Vandal (Macmillan, 1980) is a science fiction novel set in the future. Beside winning the 1980 Guardian Prize, it was a commended runner up for the Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book by a British subject. Rhine Journey (Henry Holt & Co, 1981) was shortlisted for the 1981 Booker Prize, recognising the year's best novel. Ann Schlee lives with her husband, the artist Nick Schlee, in Berkshire. They have four children. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
