ResearchCJV: I originally accepted John as parent of this Samuel, but John had a Samuel born 1781.
ResearchOn page 48, MLM accidentally listed Samuel & Elizabeth under Abijah's sister Relief Houghton and her husband John Fairbanks! This is right under the entry for Abijah and while he typed it correctly on page 91, he made the mistake on page 48. Since Abijah died in Keene, NH AND we have the NH Vital Records marriage of Samuel Houghton (not Fairbanks) to Sally Cooke and MLM said on page 48 that Samuel married Sally Cooke in Keene, I think it's safe to say that the positioning on page 48 was just a simple mistake by Marshall.26

Brad Stauf: Note on "The Houghton Genealogy" by John W. Houghton: there is a critical mistake on page 283 of this book. It lists the Samuel Houghton of this profile (person #221 who was married to Polly "Mary" Chamberlain) as HIS OWN FATHER along with a short list of children which is completely inaccurate. This entry is far out of sequence in the book in the section about descendants of Ralph. It lists his "son" as Samuel Jr., person #1837 but the birth and death and marriage dates are exactly the same as the "father", Samuel #221. It then goes on to list a "son" Roswell (#1838) born 1784 who actually seems to be the Roswell of Fairley (see "Son of Sam" section below) and other children Henry, Elizabeth, Elvira and Biather, none of whom belong to the "real Samuel #221" or his actual son Samuel #1847. On the next page, under the listing of "Samuel 1837" which is ACTUALLY SAMUEL #221, it gives the correct(ish) list of the children of Samuel #221 and Polly "Mary" Chamberlain. The end result is an incorrect extra generation of "Samuel Houghton" inserted into this family unless the details are read carefully.

My theory is that there is a real Samuel Houghton, possibly the one who lived in Fairley, who was the father of a real Samuel Jr. and Roswell but it was NOT SAMUEL #221 who lived in Guilford and had his own Samuel Jr. (#1847) and Roswell (#1845), proven to be different than the Fairley family.

Brad Stauf, Wikitree:
It is important to note that the Houghtons of Fairlee, VT and the Houghtons of Brattleboro/Guilford, VT were different families; those of Fairlee descended from immigrant John and those of Samuel of Guilford descended from the immigrant Ralph Houghton. Both families had a Samuel Sr. with sons Samuel Jr. and Roswell but a study of censuses, marriages and other data makes it clear that these were 2 different families.

Samuel Jr. was born about 1800 in Fairlee (also Fairley), Orance County, Vermont. Although a birth record hasn't been found yet, his age can be determined by census entries beginning in 1810 in that location and from a lack of appearance on his father's 1790[1] and 1800[2] census entries in Fairlee; Samuel was likely born just after that census.

His parents were Samuel Houghton Sr descended from John Houghton the immigrant (John, John, Jacob, Benjamin, Abijah)[3] and Sarah or Sally Cooke of Keene, New Hampshire (She was married as Sally and appeared in many later records as Sarah).

The 1790 census entry lists 1 male < 16 (older brother Roswell), 1 male > 16 (father Samuel Sr), 1 female (mother Sarah/Sally Cooke).

The 1800 census entry lists 1 male 10-15 (Roswell age 15/16), 1 male 26-44 (Samuel Sr. age 44/45), 2 females < 10 (Elizabeth and either another daughter who had died by 1810 or possibly a young relative), 1 female 26-44 (Sally/Sarah Cooke age 35).

Samuel Jr. first likely appears on the 1810 Fairlee census[4] as the under 10 male or the 10-15 male; his older brother Roswell was already married to Percy/Persis Parker by 1806[5] so no longer appears with the family.

Samuel's Siblings
In addition to brother Roswell, Samuel had an older sister Elizabeth born about 1793 appearing on the 1800[2] and 1810[4] census entries. She married Luther Mower in 1816 (marriage record not yet found but she is listed on her children's death records); she appeared beginning on the 1850[6] census in Fairlee with her family, died 7 Sep 1884 in Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont[7] and was buried in Fairlee Village Cemetery. At her death she was listed as age 91 years, 7 months and widowed. The death record of her son Lewis L. Mower born about 1823 lists her maiden name as Houghton,[8] confirming the relationship.

Younger brother Abiatha L (Biather in J.W. Houghton) b~ 1803, appeared in 1865 MA census as married but wife does not appear on the census (her name was Sarah T. according to 1897 MA death record of their son Edward C 1838-18 May 1897 [9]. He married 30 Nov 1872 Mary Drake Stratton in Southwick, Hampden, MA; listing Samuel & Sarah Houghton as parents[10] Abiatha d. 3 Oct 1883, buried in Southwick Cemetery in Massachusetts [11] (parental information left blank). This is the Abiatha L. Houghton with whom the widowed Sally/Sarah Cooke Houghton lived on the 1840 Fairlee census[12].

Sister Elvira b. 1 Jun 1805 to Samuel Houghton, Sarah Cook[13] m. ~ 1829 Stephen Fulton based on records of their child James M. b. 1831 VT. Elvira died 10 Jan 1891 in Strafford, VT as Elvira Houghton Fulton.[14]

Brother Henry A. b. 23 Sep 1809, married Adaline P., first known child b~1845 appeared first in 1810 as < 10 years age on the Fairlee census.[4] Henry's death (d. 4 Nov 1886, age 77 yr, 1m, 12 days = birthdate 23 Sep 1809) record in Auburn, NH[15] lists his mother's maiden name as Sarah "Nimms" or similar and says birth place was Keene, NH which matches Sally Cooke's marriage place. However, the only likely Nimms candiate was a Sarah Nims who married Calvin Chapman 1 Jan 1795 in Keene, NH[16]. Sarah & Calvin had a child as late as 1820 (found death record of multiple children), she also appears as Sally in some records so was provably not married to Samuel Houghton Sr. This death record is somewhat of a mystery.

Back to Samuel
On 24 Aug 1819 his father died[17] and on 28 Sep 1819 his estate was probated when widow Sarah and son Samuel Jr. were assigned as administrators of his estate.[18]

Samuel Jr. then likely appeared on the 1820 Fairlee census[19] with widowed mother Sarah who was listed as the householder.

In 1821 he may have been the Samuel Houghton who married Mary Tibbets on 10 Jan 1821 in Wolfeboro Falls (now Wolfsboro), NH.[20] This was about 70 miles from Fairlee and was not anywhere near Keene, NH where his mother originated but no more likely marriage record has been found yet. Later census entries list his wife as Mary from NH, so this is at least a reasonable fit for a marriage.

In 1830 Samuel appears on the Fairlee census[21] with 2 males age 5-9 (William and Henry), 1 male 30-39 (Samuel), 1 female age 5-9 (Paulina b.1824), 1 female 30-39 (Mary) and 1 female 60-69 (widowed mother Sarah).

In 1840 Sarah lived with Samuel Jr.'s brother, Abiatha L. Houghton on the Fairlee census[12] as a woman of that age appears on Abiatha's census. Samuel may have been in the process of moving to Brownville, Jefferson Co, NY where he appeared with his own family on federal and state censuses in 1850-1865. Samuel's 1840 census has not been found yet so his location at this time is uncertain but his brother Roswell appears in Alexandria, Jefferson County, NY indexed as "Russel" or "Resie" "Holon" so Samuel may have been there too (he does not appear on Roswell's census entry, there are no males/females old enough to be Samuel & Mary).[22]

Regarding Sarah, her estate was probated 5 Nov 1850 in Fairlee, VT by son Henry A. Houghton.[23] She may or may not have been the Sarah Houghton, widow of Samuel the Revolutionary War Veteran on 13 Sep 1848 in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont.[24] A gap of over 2 years to probate a woman's estate is longer than usual but Sarah's daughter Elizabeth Houghton Mower appeared in Lyndon, VT about 9 miles from St. Johnsbury in the 1850 census[6] so Sarah may have been living with her daughter's family.

From 1850 onward Samuel appears in Jefferson County, New York in censuses as did his brother Roswell (see that profile for sourcing). In 1850 [25] he, Mary and daughter Paulina appear in Brownville as they do in 1860 [26] and 1865 [27]

In 1870 he appears in Brownville as a carpenter living with Timothy Shaw and his apparent wife Mary N. Shaw, reporting as born 1797 in Massachusetts so somebody else in the household may have filled out his census.[28] Wife Mary does not appear and presumably had died by this time. Their daughter Paulina had moved to NJ, appeared on the 29 Aug 1870 census in Jersey City living with a "Cook" family of uncertain relation[29] and married James Watson 2 weeks later on 16 Nov 1870;[30] possibly Mary's death was connected to this move. It's also possible that Mary had not died as no record of her past 1865 has been found yet.

In 1880 Samuel is in nearby Ellisburgh, Jefferson County living with son William A. Houghton and his family as an 82-year old widowed carpenter & joiner, now reporting born in VT as were his mother and father.[31]

Samuel's death record or burial has not yet been found nor any record of him past 1880 in NY, NJ, VT or MA.

BiographyWilliam was born in New York and traveled to Ohio, where he married Elmina Grinnells in Lorain County and they have one child Almina/Mina (Houghton) Packard. Elmina died shortly after birth of Almina, so she was raised by her grandparents Stephen and Esther Grinnells. William then married Harriet Packard and had a son Harry. They moved to Michigan. After the death of Harriet, William married Ella Totten (b. May 5, 1857 and d. April 23, 1921.) and their children are Howard, Harrison and Bertha. Ella married again to William Newman on December 19, 1912 but is buried with Houghton name. William was in the Civil War, the 23rd infantry, company G and was a member of G.A.R. From the book "The Descendants of Ralph and John Houghton of Lancaster, Massachusetts", The lineage is Ralph, James, John, David, David W. and William.14
ResearchJWH gives as son of grandfather David; MLM and HAH: He died intestate and John Houghton (grandfather) was one of the creditors. John's father in law William Dodge was also a creditor. Perhaps William had married one of William Dodge's daughters. and the daughter was deceased. More likely, his father married one of William Dodge's daughters.13,3
