Be it Remembered, That heretofore, to wit: on the 7th day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred, and ninety three William Houghton of Antwerp Jefferson County New York------------------------------------------------ Executor named in the Last Will and Testament of Elijah Houghton late of the Town of Antwerp------------------in the County of Jefferson, deceased, appeared in open Court before the Surrogated of the County of Jefferson and made application to have the said last Will and Testament____________________which relates to both Real and Personal Estate, proved; and on such application the said Surrogate did ascertain by satisfactory evidence who were the Executors legatees & devises heirs at law and next of kin of the said testator, and their respective residences, and they are as follows, viz: Elijah Houghton of Antwerp Jeff Co N.Y. Hackley Esq. I, Elijah Houghton of the Town of Antwerp County of Jefferson and State of New York being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in the manner and form following that is to say:
First
I do hereby provide order and direct that after my death my executor shall pay out of my estate all my just and lawful debts and provide me a good and suitable Christian burial
Second
I do give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Abigail Weston
the sum of nine hundred dollars.
Third
I do give and bequeath to my beloved son Elijah Houghton Jr.
the sum of nine hundred dollars.
Fourth
I do give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Betsey Roberts the
sum of nine hundred dollars.
Fifth
I do give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Elsie Gross the
sum of nine hundred dollars.
Sixth
And I further provide order and direct that each of the legacies herein before provided shall be paid by my executor out of my estate but that they shall not; nor shall any of them become due and payable until the expiration of five years after the death of myself, and my beloved wife Harriet and I do hereby make and declare the aforesaid legacies and bequests to be a charge and lien upon my Real Estate but they shall not nor any of them shall draw
interest until they become due and payable as in this item provided
Seventh
And I do give bequeath and devise unto my beloved wife, Harriet all of the income use and profits of all my estate both Real and personal ( if she survives me) for and during her natural life.
Eighth
And I do bequeath and devise to my beloved son William Houghton of the Town of Antwerp aforesaid all the rest residue remainder and remainders of my property and estate both real and personal to have and to hold to himself his heirs and assigns forever

And I do further declare that I have heretofore made advances to, or for, the benefit of my sons, Andrew Otis D. and Orville Houghton , and have made provisions not contained in this instrument, for the payment of further sums to the said Andrew

BiographyObit (under news of Antwerp, December 12, 1892):

"Elijah Houghton, Sr., died a few days since, at the home of his son, William Houghton, in the
western part of this town. Mr. Houghton had reached the ripe old age of 92 years, 5 months and 22 days, and had been a resident of this town for 67 years. He was a man of sterling integrity and always enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his neighbors and fellow citizens. The interment took place at Vrooman Hill cemetery."

If you happen to look in the history of Jefferson County [Everts] you would see a picture [sketch] of this old homestead; also a picture [sketch] of its founders, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Houghton.

Elijah, that's Jim's grandfather, came from Harvard, Dorchester Co. [Worchester Co., at least according to present-day maps], Massachusetts. In fact he was born there on June 12, 1800. When he reached the age of ten years, he came with his parents to the Town of Leray, and his father
died two years later.

This was at the time of the War of 1812 and the lad being too young to participate in actual service did his bit by waiting upon the officers.

For two years he lived with a relative, after which he was apprenticed to a tanner and it's one who dresses the tanned leather, and he served in this capacity for some time but one day he "fell out" with his employer and took French leave.

Being now at the age of 23 years, he began to think about acquiring a home for the future, so from the wilderness of the town of Antwerp he selected a piece of land that didn't cost so very much, because the one rule of his life was to never contract a debt he would be unable to pay.

It has ever been the trend of a young man's fancy to turn to thoughts of love so what did he do but go over to the tavern at Bentleys Corners and fall head over ears in love with Harriet Dopking, the tavern keeper's daughter.

You didn't know there ever was a tavern at Bentleys Corners? Oh, yes, there was, and a post office too, and the old stage coach stopped there on its way to Ogdensburg.

Harriet Dopking was born in Oneida, April 16, 1805, and was married to Elijah Houghton October 26, 1826. It was now necessary to have a home of their own, so they built a log house on the crest of the hill out of the logs he had cut while making the clearing.

Gradually the wilderness was pushed back but even then the wolves howled and the bears prowled about and the deer gracefully sported on the hills and in the valleys, the latter often contributing a saddle of venison for the settlers' store of provisions.

Money was an unknown quantity; it just wasn't, that's all, and it wasn't needed as much as you might think because the settler could trade something he had for something he needed, which method was called trade and barter.

However, a little extra cash might not come amiss and as the sale of potash would bring a little cash return, Elijah felled the hardwood trees in windrows [and] burned them, leaching the ashes to form the potash.

How was he going to get the potash to the Sackets Harbor market? Take it in his Ford truck? I guess not. Buck and Bright, the animal ox team were to be the means of transportation, and when the arduous task was completed, he received half money and half provisions.

Elijah took great delight in raising nice hogs. Every year at butchering time he had on display five or six of these porkers weighing six and seven hundred pounds each. He would point to them with pride as he said to the neighbors, "See this barrel of peas and barley meal with the little dish in it? Well, I only fed them this little dish full." He didn't add how many times a day the little dish was filled accompanied by plenty of skimmed milk.

I suppose you think he and his family must have possessed voracious appetites to consume all this meat, but the fact was he sold much of the salt pork to woodcutters, as nine different families owned land adjoining his, until he bought them out one by one, and ultimately owned the 250 acres which now [1931] comprise the farm.

In 1830, their log house burned to the ground. All that was saved was a feather bed and some pork from a barrel. Neighbors lent a hand and soon they had a new home, different from the old one in that it was a frame house, not very large, and even this one was later replaced by the spacious one which now stands on Houghton Hill.

Now and then the stork paid them a visit until the names of five sons and five daughters were recorded in the family Bible. There were Elijah, Andrew, Otis, William, Arval, and Harriet who died when only one year old.

Esther the oldest girl died at the age of fourteen. Then came Abigail who became Mrs. Clark Weston, and Elsie who married Spencer Cross. The last was a girl named Betsey. [Some discrepancy with the Houghton genealogy -- this version could be more accurate -- should check 1850 census for Town of Antwerp.]

As time passed Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Houghton grew old in years but rich in experience and were much esteemed in the community in which they lived. In politics he was a lifelong Democrat.

It became more and more apparent that the strenous labors of farm life were becoming too much for them so Elijah, Jr. assumed its management, while his brother, William, was in the mean time completing his education and teaching school on the road between Redwood and Rossie.

Among William's pupils was a lively blue-eyed miss by the name of Harriet Simmonds [sic], and while [William was] diligently teaching the three Rs, sly Cupid introduced to them the age-old subject of love, and the upshot of it was, twenty year old William was married to nineteen year old Harriet. [Houghton genealogy says William was born in 1843; his gravestone in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, NY says 1841.]

It was a coincidence that Harriet's name was the same as that of her mother-in-law, with whom she went to live, for as WIlliam was now married, he took Elijah [Jr.]'s place in caring for the aged parents.

Young Harriet was slight of build but strong in character and constitution, and she blithely took up her work of skimming the four hundred pans of milk on the big rack, making butter from thirty-six cows,
often filling at one churning a sixty-weight tub.

Candles had to be made. It had been the custom to do the work in a cold room, dipping the wicks in melted tallow, laying them across sticks to harden. A newer way had lately come into vogue of running them into molds, some holding two dozen, some one dozen, while others held only six
candles.

Young Mrs. Houghton was afraid her elders would consider her "shiftless" if she didn't do it the hardest way, so she went into the cold room to complete the task, consequently taking a severe cold, which converted her to the easier and more up-to-date method of candlemaking.

Sometimes when the candle supply was low and Harriet needed a light by which to see to weave, a penny or button was tied up in a cloth and placed in a saucer of grease, the upright ends acting as a wick.

By the means of this light, Harriet also did her knitting, both for her family and to sell, for many a longed-for article was puchased with the proceeds of her ever busy knitting needles. But even her bright eyes could not penetrate the future to see the day when she would push a button and flood her home with brilliant light.

Two barrels of soft soap must always be kept on hand so that when only one remained more must be made because raw soap would eat the hands. Lye was prepared by pouring water over wood ashes and when this was leached out it was used in making the soap, boiling fat in the lye. A lot of water it took and one time this slender woman carried twenty-five pails of water up the hill for this purpose.

There was such an immense amount of work to be done that a hired girl was always employed; sometimes the same one stayed for years if she didn't happen to get married, but in the winter she was allowed to go home for a vacation.

Houghton's farm kept the merino sheep which produced a wool so fine that Harriet could get ten knots of it on the spindle of the old spinning wheel. When it was spun a woman came to weave it into cloth which was later taken to Wegatchie where it was fulled and pressed.

A tailor made it into a suit for William, "and it was more beautiful than the finest broadcloth," said Mrs. William Houghton, now nearly eighty-eight years of age. Her blue eyes kindled as she added, "William did look so nice in that suit."

Some of the other boys went west to Michigan and Iowa, but for some time Otis and Orval drove a peddling cart through Jefferson County, picking up rags and selling tin ware. They gave their sister-in-law the privilege of selecting some of the better rags, and one year she made one hundred yards of carpet covering nearly every floor in the house.

Mr. and Mrs. William Houghton had eight boys but no girls, and the names of the boys were Elijah, William, Mark, James, George, Cleveland, Elmer and Roy. [This list is not quite correct -- one of the sons was named Elijah Mark; the eighth son, omitted from this list, was Edwin S. In addition, at least one census -- possibly in error -- shows the presence of an "adopted" daughter Eva in the family of William and Harriet Houghton. It is not clear who she actually was.] Elmer died at the age of six years. The others grew up, energetic and ambitious, availing themselves of all the educational advantages possible. Some graduated from Potsdam Normal but Mark, who of late made a trip around the world, was a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. [This passage is misleading, in that by 1931, when the article was written, at least five of the eight brothers were deceased -- William A. (1929), George R. (1880), Edwin S. (1901), Cleveland A. (1900) and, as stated, Elmer (1886). Mrs. William (Harriet) Houghton, who provided a large part of the information in the article, died in 5 April 1932, four days short of her eighty-ninth birthday.]

Miss Mina Herrick taught the district school at Bishops Corners 'til James, the son of William, carried her off to Houghton Hill as his bride, and they took up the management of the large 250 acre farm. The grandfather, Elijah Houghton, died the next year at the age of ninety-three, the grandmother having died at the age of eighty-eight. [James and Mina were married 30 June 1891. Jim has many recollections of his grandfather, remembering how he and his brothers delighted in getting a small axe of which his grandfather was very choice, and a game of hide and seek was constantly waged, for no matter where grandfather hid the axe, the lively boys were sure to find
it.

One day his gandfather stood in the woodshed door watching Jim trying to break up some boards. "You will get hurt, Jim," said he, and sure enough he did. "If you had stayed out of here and minded your own business I wouldn't have," blurted out young Jim in his pain."

Grandfather started for Jim, and Jim started for some far distant place, but en route he came to the conclusion that it would be better to settle the affair with Grandpa, than with someone else, so he turned about, apologized and was forgiven.

James and his brothers roamed the woods and like Hiawatha, "learned of every bird their language," and also to recognize the different varieties of tree and plant life.

They coaxed squirrels into their hands by knocking on the tree with a stick, and they ran races with them to see which should gather their winter supply of nuts first. The boys sometimes picked up as much as ten bushels, and here's hoping their little wild brothers had plenty too.

James and Mina Herrick Houghton also had eight children: Elmer, who is a prosperous farmer of Antwerp; Mrs. Marjorie H. Lathan, a teacher at Bishops Corners, William, a dentist in Watertown, Mrs. Harriet H. Rogers, a graduate nurse in Utica, Miss Gertrude, a nurse in dental hygiene in Watertown; Mrs. Winifred H. Busler, a graduate of Potsdam Normal; James, who was drowned in Moon Lake, September, 1918; and Miss Eleanor Houghton, a student nurse in Utica.

Thirty years ago William Houghton died and his widow Harriet Simmonds [sic] Houghton lives in her own home at Theresa beside her son James and his wife. April 9, 1931 she was eighty-eight years of age, and it is to them and the history of Jefferson County that "Ye Scribe" is indebted for the facts contained in this narrative of the Houghtons of Houghton Hill.

Elijah Houghton The subject of this sketch was born in Harvard, Wooster county, Massachusetts, June 12, 1800, and in company with his parents emigrated to the town of Le Ray in 1810. His father died two years later, and Elijah went to live with one of the older members of the family, remained two years, and then served as an apprentice at the tanner and currier trade till he was of age. In 1823 he purchased his first piece of land in Antwerp, but did not settle permanently upon it till 1826. On the 26th of October, 1826, he married Miss Harriet Dopking, of Oneida county, New York. She was born April 16, 1805, and is the mother of ten children, --five sons and five daughters. Five sons and three daughters still live, each of whom is settled well in life. Mr. Houghton has a farm of two hundred acres, which he cleared himself. In 1830 Mr. Houghton lost his his house and all its contents by fire, but kind neighbors aided him in provisions, etc., and soon he had another home. He has been a life-long Democrat. he is now old in years and rich with experience, and is an esteemed citizen of the town. One characteristic of his life would be well to follow, and that is, he never contracted a debt which he was not able to meet when due."

Elijah Houghton, served through the war of 1812 and was at the battle of Sackets Harbor. Mr. Houghton has five brothers: Dr. E. M. Houghton of Detroit, who holds the position of superintendent of the extensive laboratory of Parke, Davis & Co., manufacturers of medical and pharmaceutical preparations: James, who resides on the old homestead at Antwerp; Edwin S., a mining expert of Fountain, Col; Dr. C. A. Honghton, a prominent dentist of Philadelphia, N. Y., and Roy, a student at the Philadelphia (N. Y.) Academy.8
