Major-General Daniel Hoghton (27 August 1770 – 16 May 1811) was a talented and experienced British Army officer who served during the Napoleonic Wars with distinction until his death during combat with the French at the Battle of Albuera in the Peninsula War. His death brought general mourning in Britain and a monument to his memory was raised in St Paul's Cathedral.

During his long career, Hoghton had fought on several West Indian islands, in India, Denmark, Portugal and Spain and had even spent a brief period standing in for a Royal Marines detachment in the Channel Fleet. A popular and able officer, Wellington was reported to have commented on his death: "I understand that it was impossible for anybody to behave better than he did . . . he actually fell waving his hat and cheering his brigade on to the charge"[1]

French Revolutionary Wars

Hoghton was born in Castle Hedingham in Essex as second son to Sir Henry Hoghton, 6th Baronet and his second wife Fanny in 1770. Raised in political circles as the son of an MP, Daniel instead chose a military career and at 23 joined the 82nd Regiment of Foot as a captain through purchase at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War in 1793. It took some time for Hoghton to settle, moving in 1794 to the short-lived 97th Regiment of Foot and in 1795 on their disbandment joining the 67th Regiment of Foot. Whilst with the 97th, Hoghton and his troops spent some months with the Channel Fleet as makeshift marines after manning shortages necessitated the posting.[1] His father died the same year and the titles, estates and political offices passed to his elder brother Henry Philip Hoghton.

The 67th Regiment was dispatched to the West Indies in 1796 to take part in several campaigns, including serving in San Domingo during the Haitian Revolution and spending time stationed in Jamaica. The same year Hoghton was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In January 1799 Hoghton was transferred to the 88th Regiment of Foot, also known as the Connaught Rangers who were stationed in India. Hoghton took passage and met his regiment in Bombay. For unknown reasons Hoghton did not accompany his men to Egypt for the final defeat of the French army stationed there in 1801 and instead spent some years on the staff of Lord Mornington, returning to England with dispatches in 1804.[1]
Napoleonic Wars

Following his arrival in England during November 1804, Hoghton was given command of the newly raised 2nd battalion, 8th Regiment of Foot, gaining promotion to full colonel the following year. After training and preparing the regiment, Hoghton was dispatched with his troops to Denmark for participation in the Siege of Copenhagen under Sir Arthur Wellesley, whose brother Hoghton had known in India.[1] Hoghton was not heavily engaged at Copenhagen and was soon transferred to the West Indies once more, participating in the invasion and capture of Martinique in 1809. It was for this reason that Hoghton did not join Wellesley in the Iberian Peninsula until 1810, taking command of a brigade in Cadiz.[1]

On 25 July 1810, Hoghton made the jump to major-general and in September took command of the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Division under Sir William Stewart, a man he had served under during the 1790s. Hoghton's first taste of action during the Peninsula War was at the Battle of Albuera, where Stewart's division was hastily deployed after a Spanish withdrawal on the right of the battleline.[1] The rapid nature of the deployment opened the division to attack by French cavalry and the 1st brigade under Colonel John Colborne was almost destroyed. Hoghton's brigade held firm however and drove off the French cavalry and then withstood an attack by the 11,000 men of the French 5th Corps, three-quarters of the brigade falling dead or wounded during the furious battle. As the attack subsided, Hoghton removed his hat to motion his men forward and as he did so was struck by a musket ball and killed instantly.[1]

Despite Hoghton's death, the brigade remained strong and withdrew from the field in good order, the action failing to produce a clear victor. Alone amongst the hundreds of men who fell from his division, Hoghton's body was retrieved in the immediate aftermath and carried to Elvas, where it was buried in the British Cemetery Elvas which is now a memorial to the 60,000 officers and men of the British and Portuguese armies who died alongside their Spanish allies in the cause of freedom and independence in the Peninsular War of 1808-1814.[2] In Britain his death was treated with sorrow and a government motion paid for a monument to his memory to be raised in St Paul's Cathedral.[1]

He was a descendant of the General Houghton, under Wellington, who was killed at the battle of Albura in the Peninsular war in 1811. The French finally withdrew.⁴

McClanahan: "The name of the wife of James Houghton is usually given as as Sawyer, without sanction or record. Her prenom was without doubt "Mary," as it is shown in James' will. But that he md. Mary, Dau. Thomas and Mary (Prescott) Sawyer is doubtful. Mary Sawyer was born in 1652 (Lan. 10) and the birth of her dau. Hannah, is fixed with reasonble certainty at 1688. Mary (Sawyer) Houghton in 1688 would have been 36 years of age, and would have born seven children after that age, a possibility of dubious possibility. None of the dates of James and Mary's children are of record, which increases the difficulties. In all probability James Houghton md. another Mary, somewhat younger than himself, and that the date for Mary Houghton, wife of James, still stands. Deed dated June 2, 1724 (Wor. Registry of Deeds, V. #44, p. 432 filed Decr. 7, 1761 (37 years later): "James Willard, for self and wife, Hannah, Edward Houghton, Experience Houghton, and John Houghton, Jr., all of Lancaster, Thomas Houghton and Ephriam Houghton, also of Lancaster, and being grantors but not signing, convey to James, son of their late father, Ralph Houghton, all their interest in Lancaster of the sd. Ralph Houghton." John Houghton, Jr., was evidently John (James2, Ralph1.) The deed contains all the names of the children of James Houghton (R1) who lived to maturity, except the eldest son, James,3, and in this deed Hannah is the wife of Jame Willard."

Richard Houghton III, 1997: "James married MARY----around 1685; her background is presently unclear, although she was probably a Willard or a Sawyer.";
"VanNoy, p. 6. Her surname has been given variously as Willard or Sawyer; there are plausible arguments for both. The Sawyers were a numerous family in the area, as were the Willards. If Mary was a Sawyer it is thought she would have been the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Prescott) Sawyer. See M. McClanahan, p. 4 [5]. J. W. Houghton, p. 91 (giving this Mary as James' wife). Supporting this supposition is the fact that one of James's sons was named Thomas. In addition, James' two sons James and Ephriam married Sawyer girls; and his younger sister Sarah married Caleb Sawyer. However, there are problems with this theory. Mary Sawyer was born in 1652 (J. W. Houghton gives the date as February 14, 1653, McClanahan as January 4, 1652); Hannah Houghton, James' daughter, was born in 1688. That would have made Mary (Sawyer) Houghton thirty-six at the birth, and a rather unbelievable fifty-three at the birth of Edward, their last child. S. Morita, apparently taking her information from J. W. Houghton, gives the name as Sawyer, see S. Moirita, p. 124; as does J. Forest, see Josephine C. Frost, Ancestors of Alden Smith Swan and His Wife Mary Althea Farwell, p. 184 (New York 1923).
I believe that a Willard background is more probable. A Samuel Willard was a witness to James' will, and his daughter Hannah married a James Willard. VanNoy, p. 6-7. A small printed family history she cites entitled Houghton Family, Including Ancestry of the Hancock Family & Some Other Descendants (1986) gives the surname as Willard. If she was a Willard, she was most likely the daughter of Samuel Willard. Samuel ws the son of Simon Willard, who moved to Lancaster in 1659 and removed to Groton in 1671. See Eugene W. Montgomery, Willard-Peabody Genealogy, p. 8-9 (Galena 1915). Simon had two daughters named Mary, but neither married a Houghton and both were born too early to have been James' wife. Samuel, as noted above, was a witness to James' will. Moreover, he moved to Union, Connecticut, in 1729; James' son Edward moved there in 1744. Samuel's children would have been the right age to have married James."; 1999: "This Mary is most often identified as either Mary Sawyer, Mary Willard, or Mary Hinckley. There are problems with all three.
MARY SAWYER
The Sawyers were a numerous family in the area, as were the Willards. If Mary was a Sawyer, it is thought she would have been the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Prescott) Sawyer. Tenuously supporting this supposition is the fact that one of James' sons was named Thomas. In addition, James' two sons James and Ephriam married Sawyer girls; and his younger sister Sarah married Caleb Sawyer. However, there are problems with this theory. Mary Sawyer was born in 1652 (J.W. Houghton gives the date as 14 February 1653, McClanahan as 4 January 1652); Hannah Houghton, James' daughter, was born in 1688. That would have made Mary (Sawyer) Houghton thirty-six at the birth, and a somewhat unbelieveable fifty-three at the birth of Edward, their last child. In addition, as another respondant to the initial query noted, "I don't think that Mary Sawyer, the daughter of Thomas Sawyer and Mary Prescott, married James Houghton. Thomas Sawyer's will and some other documents refer to his daughter Mary as Mary Wilder, which supports the proposition that Mary Sawyer married Nathaniel Wilder. In addition, Mary would have been about 20+ years older than James, which is not impossible but seems unlikely."

A Willard background is slightly more probable. A Samuel Willard was a witness to James' will, and his daughter Hannah married a James Willard. A small printed family history entitled "Houghton Family, Including Ancestry of the Hancock Family & Some Other Descendants", gives the surname as Willard. If she was a Willard, she was most likely the daughter of Samuel Willard. Samuel was the son of Simon Willard, who moved to Lancaster in 1659 and removed to Groton in 1671. Simon had two daughters named Mary, but neither married a Houghton and both were born too early to have been James' wife. Samuel, as noted above, was a witness to James' will. Moreover, he moved to Union, Connecticut, in 1729; James' son Edward moved there in 1744. Samuel's children would have been the right age to have married James.
MARY HINCKLEY
Most Hinkley genealogies I have seen give the husband of Mary-2 Hinckley, daughter of Samuel-1 hinckley, as John/James Houghton. This Mary was baptized on 18 September 1631, and lived with her father in Scituate and then Barnstable, Mass. There are several problems with this attribution. First, no source gives any authority for concluding that this John/James Houghton is the same James Houghton. Second, given that James was born around 1650, and perhaps more importantly, Mary Hinckley would have been at least 20 years older than him."

Archives XCII:144). "Endorsed these may certify that having advice from Capt. Stevens of No. 4 that a party of Indians ware Come between the Rivers. I sent out the within named James Houghton's Company. Signed Sam Willard" (Mass. Archives 92:144). The Company scouted six weeks from Jul. 24, 1748.

Weis: He served in the French and Indian Wars under Captain Abijah Willard, April 29, 1747, and as a Sergeant, July 19, 1748 to August 12, 1748, and as such commanded a Scout under Colonel Samuel Willard.^6,16,18

JWH:"Ralph, b.----. We have no record of the birth of this Ralph, but Lancaster history gives the following account. Men went from Lancaster to the spacious port of Cape Breton, in 1710, when Massachusetts sent fourteen trasnsports. The place was captured Oct. 22d, 1710. This Ralph was in that expedition He lost his life and his brother, James, administered on his estate. The amount due from the state was 5.14.11 [pounds]. There has been great difficulty in understanding the record of Ralph, the son of Ralph, and Ralph, the son of James, since both were mariners, and both lost their lives in the expedition in which they were engaged. This expedition was to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. I have for authority for this solution Mr. Charles E. Houghton, of Baltimore, who went to Lancaster and found in the records the account of each of these expeditions."

Marvin: "The expedition to Port Royal, the spacious port of Cape Breton in 1710 when Massachusetts sent 14 transports with troops and supplies captured on 22 of Octber. How many went from Lancaster is unknown, but the one of her sons was there is evidence from the settlement of estate of Ralph Houghton. The first Ralph had a son James. This James had a son. Ralph and another son, named James. This last James was, in the year 1711, adminstrator on the estate of his brother Ralph, grandson of the first Ralph. The appraisers were Peter Joslin, Josiah White, jr., and John Houghton, jr. In the Inventory is this item. "Wages due to said Ralph Houghton; at the time of his decease, for his services in the late expedition to Port Royal, 5.14.11."

EDWARD-3 HOUGHTON
Edward Houghton (James-2 Ralph-1) was born in 1705 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was the youngest son of James Houghton and his wife Mary ------.
He removed to Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut, sometime prior to 1727. There he married ABIGAIL [Mc]COY on 16 November 1727. Abigail was the daughter of Archibald [Mc]Coy and Margaret Longley, and was born on 6 January 1704, in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The couple had nine children:

On 8 February 1728/9, Edward's brother-in-law William [Mc]Coy sold him the west half of "a Mansion House" located near the town Meeting House:
" To all People to whom these presents Shall Come Greetting Know Yee yt I William Maccoy of Hasnumiscom in ye County of Suffolk [Massachusetts] Housewright for and in consideration of ye sum of fifty pounds money to me in hand before ye ensealing hereof well and truly paid by Edward Houghton of Pomfrett in ye County of Windham Housewright ye recipt whereof I do Hereby acknowledge and my self therewith fully satisfied & thereof and of every part and parcel thereof Do Exonerate acquitt and Discharge him sd Edward Houghton his Heirs & execrs & admrs for Ever by these presents Have Given, Granted, Bargained, sold, alliened, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents Do freely fully and absolutely Give, Grant, Bargain, sell, alliene, convey and confirm unto him ye sd Edward Houghton his Heirs and assignes for ever a certain Mansion House being in Pomfrett in ye County of Windham near ye Meeting House in sd Pomfrett and is a part of a house my Honord Father now dwells in Vizt ye west half of sd House wt ye privilidge of ye well as also ye celler wc is under ye west end of sd House Vizt Half ye celler and half ye well and also liberty of coming to sd House from ye Highway and also liberty of Wood Yard which Land I hold by vertue of a deed from my brother John Maccoy Refference thereto being had will fully appear To Have & To Hold ye sd granted and bargained premises to all ye appurtenances privilidges and comoditties to ye same belonging or in any wise appertaining to him ye sd Edward Houghton and to his Heirs and assigns for Ever to his and their only proper use benifitt and behoof for Ever . . . .

In 1744, Edward and his family moved to Union, Windham (now Tolland) County, Connecticut, about twelve miles northwest of Pomfret. At this time, Union was the center of a bustling lumber industry. Edward built the first lumber mill in the town at a place later called Lawson's Mill; it was the first of seventeen that were to be built there. Besides the lumber mill, he also operated a grist mill and is described in town records as a "housewright." On 14 August 1774, he purchased a tract of land from Samuel Bartholomew.
Edward was listed as a full member of the Union Congregational Church in 1759.
Edward died in Union on 15 March 1777 at the age of seventy-two. Abigail died only fifteen days later on 30 March, also at Union.
As Edward died intestate, letters of administration were issued to his son James on 11 June 1777. Although there is no inventory of the estate, a list of debts allowed against it dated 19 April 1777, show debts of œ1.01.00 to Archibald [Mc]Coy, œ1.05.00
to his daughter Experience Houghton, and others for a total of œ30.08.03.^{7,23,24,19,16,25} "

A farmer who lived near Sawyer's Mill. Bear and deer were troubling his cornfield. He set a trap and caught a bear. He then went down to his cornfield around sunset. Seeing something moving in his field, he fired and killed his own son. MLM gives Ephraim as son, but Ephraim is alive at his father's will.^23,25,26

Burr & Gage, p. 393: "Wyman, in his Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, states that Benjamin Bosworth of Hull married Beatrix Houghton, who died 8 Jan. 1711/12, ae. 89, and it has been supposed that she was the widow of John Houghton. But Judge Samuel Sewall wrote in his Diary: "Sixth day Jan. 1711 Mrs. Benj. Bosworth is buried Aged 89 years. Her first husband's name was Joslin by whom she had her daughter," etc. Nourse, in his Annals of Lancaster, p. 321, gives this entry: "1671: 9, 16 Benj. Bosworth and widow Beatrice Joslin [married]." But in 1671 John Houghton was living. There is, therefore, no evidence of the marriage of his widow."

Willard, 1826: "He was quite young when his parents moved to Lancasterr. From 1693 to 1724, inclusive, he represented the town fourteen years in the general court. For a long time after the town was rebuilt he appears to have been the only magistrate in the place. He was quite celebrated in the neighborhood, as a man of weight and influence, and was a very skillful conveyancer. In this business he had great employment. He gave the land for the second meeting house. His dwelling house was on the south side of the old common, a little to the south west of Mr. Faulkner's. Three ancient pear trees planted by himself stand in front of the site of his house. During the last twelve years of his life he was blind."

Marvin, p. 182: town record: "Granted 80 acres to John Houghton for serving as clerk and making of of rales lying above the Red Spring, if bound out of the stated common."; p. 740, "He seems to have been the only magistrate in the town for many years after the rebuilding. Joseph Willard, Esquire, states that he represented the town for fourteen years in the legislature, but omits the years 1690 and 1692 when John Houghton was undoubtedly one of the two deputies sent, and includes the year 1718 when Lancaster elected not John Houghton, Sen., but Lieutenant John, his son. We find the title Justice given him as early as 1718, though the date of his commission is put down in the civil list 1729. Perhaps Justice Houghton might have been appointed the first judge of the Worcester County Court of Common Pleas in 1731, instead of his younger neighbor, Joseph ilderr, but for his growing blindness. Although then eighty years of age, his mental and physical vigor were little impaired. John Houghton was the son of John and Beatrix, who in 1653 set up their roof tree somewhere near Dean's, now Goodridge Brook. Not far away on the south side of the Narroww Lane, lived Jacob Farrar whose only daughter, Mary, must have been John's nearest playmate. February 22, 1672, when John was about twenty-one, and Mary twenty-three years of age, she became his wife. Their home, at least after the massacre of 1676, was on the Old Common as it is now called, though then and long after known as Bride Cake Plain. Their house stood on the south side of the highway opposite the grounds of the State Industrial School. After fifty-two years of married life, the wife died April 7, 1724, and January 27, 1725, John Houghton, at the age of seveny-five, married Hannah Wilder, aged seventy-two. The Boston Evening Post for Monday, February 14, 1737, thus briefly records his death: Lancaster, Februrary 8th, 1736-7 On the 3d Instant died died here (after a few Day's Indisposition) John Houshton, Esq: in the 87th Year of his Age. according to tradition, born in England in 1650 and came to America with his parents the same year. A later report says that he was born in Dedham, Mass., which for many reasons seems more probable. He married 1,22, 1671, Mary Farrar, b. in England in 1648, dau. of Jacob and Ann Farrar, who died 4,7 1724. John died 2.3, 1737, aged 86 years. After the massacre of 1675, they, with wife's parents, fled to Woburn, Mass., where Jacob d. 8, 14, 1677. In the year 1700 John bought the lands formerly owned by his father-in-law. On the division of his father's estate, he retained the homestead on the Common and gave the land for a meeting house there, and he was leader of the movement which took the place of meeting from the spot where the first and second churches stood, to the common. The important petitions to the legislature sent from the town in the time of Queen Ann's war were signed by him and his brother, Jonas. He was an expert penman and during nearly a generation was a leading man in Lancaster and vicinity. Between the years 1693 and 1724 he was delegate to the general court for fourteen years, and seems to have been the only magistrate in town for many years after the rebuilding. He was commonly called Justice Houghton. He was quite celebrated as a man of weight and influence and was a very skillful conveyancer and writer of legal papers. At the age of seventy-five he married, 2nd, Hannah Wilder, who was then seventy-two years old. In 1704 he had command of a garrison house on the east side of the river Nashua in Lancaster. He was blind the last twelve years of his life.The epitaphs on his wife's and his own tombstones which still stand in the cemetery, read as follows:
"Here lies the body of Mrs. mary Houghton, ye wife of John Houghton Esquire, who died April the 7th, Ano dm 1724 and in the 76th year of her age. Here lies the body of John Houghton Esquire, As you are now so were we, as we are now so you will be: Who died February 3d, anno dominy 1737, and in the 86th year of his age."
Many of his descendants are still living in the vicinity of Lancaster. We may add in passing that the oldest date (1684) now to be found, is that over the grave of the first John Houghton of Lancaster. The practice of marking graves by inscribed headstones probably did not begin until after the massacre in 1676, and resettlement therof."

In 1731, aged 80 years, mentally alert and physically fit - had been T. C. for 40 years; was moderator, slectman and assessor at various times. John Houghton came from England in the Abigail, 1635, being then a mere boy. A rude slate stone in the old yard records his death April 29, 1684. His wife's name was Beatrix. Although he signed the covenant in 1653, it is doubtful if he came here to reside for several years, as
the records of his children's births are not found as of Lancaster until that of Beatrix, his daughter, in 1665.

In his will he mentions his "seven children." They were: John Houghton Jr. b. about 1650; Robert Houghton b. 1658; Jonas Houghton b. ____;
Mary Houghton b. ____; Beatrix Houghton b. 1665; Benjamin Houghton b. 1668; Sarah Houghton b. 1672.

During the desertion of the town the family sought refuge in Charlestown (MA). At the re-settlement the sons established new homes
east of the river, upon Bridecake Plain, now known as the Old Common.

The intrusion of so fanciful a baptismal name as Beatrix among the otherwise rigidly scriptural designations of the family, denotes perhaps an
imaginative tendency in some member of it, and this found freer scope in the naming of real estate acquired. Thus we find in John Houghton's various parcels of land, "Rosemary meadow," "Horse Swamp," "Houghton park," "Cranberry meadow," "The Meadow of the three
fountains," "Job's corner conveniency," and "Tobacco Pipe Meadow."

The daughter Beatrix married John Pope, Sept 20, 1683. The oldest son, John became the most prominent citizen of Lancaster in his day, for
many years serving in various town offices, and as representative and justice.

John, b. circa 1650, in England; d. 3d February, 1736-1737; m. 22d January, 1671, Mary FARRAR, b. 1648, d. 1724, dau. of Jacob FARRAR, of Lancaster, b. in England circa 1634, he son of Jacob Farrar, who was killed by the Indians, 22d August, 1675; was known widely as Justice HOUGHTON; represented Lancaster, 1690, and many years after New Charter.

"2. Justice JOHN HOUGHTON, Esquire, (John 1), was born about 1650 and he died at Lancaster, February 3, 1736/7, aged 87 years (Grave Stone). He married, first, at Lancaster, January 22, 1671/2, Mary Farrar, born about 1648, died at Lancaster, April 9, 1724, aged 76 years (April 7 - Grave Stone), the daughter of Jacob and Ann Farrar. He married, second, at Lancaster, January 27, 1724/5, Mrs. Hanah (Atherton) Wilder, born at Lancaster, January 10, 1657/8, died at Lancaster, January 4, 1737/8, the daughte of James and Hannah Atherton, and the widow of Lieutenant John Wilder.
Squire Houghton was taxed 1688, for the new parsonage, was in garrison, March 18, 1691/2, and was a proprietor of the additional grant, the deed of which was made to him and others, and has been cut into the back of his present grave stone in the old settler's burial field.
He was a noted figure figure in Lancaster's history, being known as Justice Houghton. He was the most prominent citizen of the town in his day. He served as moderator, magistrate, judge and justice of the peace, selectman, assessor, schoolmaster, town clerk, 1685-2725 (40 years), clerk of the writs, proprietary clerk of Lancaster lands, before 1716, moderator of the Proprietors of the Additional Grant, 1716-1725, and clerk of the Proprietors of the Additional Grant, 1716-1725. He also served as Representative ot the General Court, 1692-1693, 1697, 1705-1706, 1708, 1711-1712, 1715-1717, 1721 and 1724.
He lived at the Old Common and gave the land for the burying ground and for the Third Meeting House of the First Church. John Houghton was admitted to the First Church in Lancaster, 1708. She [sic] owned the covenant of the First Church and was baptized as an adult, November 28, 1708. Mrs. Hannah (Atherton) (Wilder) Houghton owned the covenant of the First Church and was baptized as an adult, February 4, 1727/8. Mary (Farrar) Houghton was admitted to the First Church, March 22, 1723/4.
An obituary of Justice Houghton was published in the Boston Evening Post, February 14, 1736/7."

Deed filed by John Houghton in 1733/4, copy obtained from the Worcester, Massachusetts County Courthouse: In a deed dated January 4, 1733 John Houghton gave his youngest daughter Hepsibeth and her husband Joseph Brabrook several parcels of land in Lancaster: "I John Houghton of Lancaster in the County of Worcester in his majesties province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Esq for love good will I bear unto my Son in Law Joseph Braybrook and Hepsibah brabrook my youngest daughter Wife of the said Joseph Braybrook both of Brookfield in the County and province aforesaid..." The deed also mentions "...Some Lands I have Given to my son Wm Houghton..." [2]

Lieutenant John Houghton. the first son of Justice John Houghton, is old enough to be the father of Hepsibeth as he has two daughters, only one of which the book has identified. However, if his date of death is correct as 1724, he could not be the John Houghton transferring land in 1733/4. The writer of the deed also mentions that he has a son Wm Houghton. If Lieut. John Houghton had no sons, it is further evidence that the writer of the deed is Justice John Houghton and that he is the father of Hepsibeth who married Joseph Brabrook.

History of Arkansas, p. 1184 (ancestor of Jeffrey A. Houghton): "The Houghton lineage shows the family to have been among the early Colonial one» of Massachusetts Bay, its immigrant ancestor having arrived on American soil only about a third of a century following the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Kook. John Houghton, of Lancaster, England, came to Lancaster. Massachusetts, in 1633, and died then in 1684, and the most ancient of the headstones in the cemetery of that old New England town bears his honored name. We know that his wife’s Christian name was Beatrice and that their sons were Benjamin, William, Robert and John, Jr. The last, born just before the family departed for.“the land of promise.” is said to have possessed the accomplishment rather rare in those days of being a fine penman. He became a leading man in his region, was for fourteen years a delegate to the Ueneral Court and for many years he seems to have been the only magistrate of his town, while his tenure of theoffice of town clerk covered a period of no lea» than forty years. He was a skilled conveyancer in the transferring of title bv deed and Otherwise and the land upon which the third church was erected in 1706 was donated by him. He was instrumental in the removal of the meeting houses from their former locations to the old common. He lost his sight before his death, on February 3, 1737, when past seventy- six years of age. and he was buried in the cemetery on the old common. This epitaph is chiseled upon his headstone: “Here lies buried the lody of John Houghton Esquire. As you are so were we. As we are so will you he. Burr & Gage, p. 397: "From the will of Robert Houghton (Middlesex Probate records), the settlement of his estate (ib.), and the records of various towns, his children appear to have been as given below. (order of births uncertain)"

J.W.Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, p. 300: "Resided in Woburn for a time after the town of Lancaster was destroyed; settled finally, after his father's death, on what is now called "The Acre" now in Clinton, Mass. Robert and his sister, Beatrix Pope, were in the garrison, mentioned heretofore as under the command of their brother John, as were also John's sons, Joseph and John. This garrison was on the north side of the Old Common, near the center of the Industrial School buildings. The family suffered a great deal from the Indian raid, July 31, 1704. John Houghton made the report of the losses. His son, John, lost three swine, one large dwelling house with three firs, belonging to him and Phillip Ross, and about 16 pounds of personal estate. Brother Jonas lost one ox. A petition signed by John and Jonas Houghton, bearing date November 13,1704, was presented to the General Court, which "Showeth that the distressed inhabitants of Lancaster, being under the awful rebuke of God's hand in the manifest tokens of his displeasure towards us," etc., stating in particular that many had sustained losses and some were almost ruined as to their estate and that their meeting house was destroyed by fire. They continue in these words, "The late awful stoke of God's hand in the last week, in the loss of our revered minister who was very worthy and desirable (Rev. Mr. Gardner) whose loss is ready to sink our spirits -- and having formerly one minister slain by stroke; the poor people felt the need of help." The petition asks that the tax of 86 pounds be remited."

Weis: "Robert Houghton returned to Lancaster after King Philip's War, and settled in that part of Lancaster now called the "Acre" in Clinton. He was taxed in 1688, for the new parsonage; was in garrison at Lancaster, March 18, 1691/2, and again in 1704. He was a proprietor of the additonal grant, builder of the Third Meeting House of the First Church in Lancaster, 1708, and he received 25 acres of land for "building the pulpit."

Brandt: He was a soldier in King Phillip's War. After the war he returned to Lancaster MA. and settled in that part of Lancaster now called the Acre in Clinton. He was a proprietor in the Additional Grant (Leominister). He built the Third Meeting House of the First Church in 1708. For building the pulpit he received 25 acres of land. He died intestate Nov 7, 1723. His nocupative will made Nov 4, 1723, during his last illness, provided for the benefit of his wife and the disposal of his personal estate.^{9,23,3,33,34,35}

A petition was sent, Oct 25, 1704, to remit the tax of 86 people because of the damage due to Indian raids. "sheweth that the distressed inhabitants of Lancaster being under the awful rebukes of God's hand in the manifest tokens of his displeasure towards us, in permitting those barbarous heathen to be such a scourge to us...", citing many sustained losses and the burning of the meeting house. JWH: "They were married while staying in Woburn, on account of the trouble with the Indians. After his father's death he settled in Bolton, on his father's land on Vaughn's Hill. He served in Queen Ann's War. In 1719, Jonas "measured," showing that he was a surveyor as well as a farmer. he was an active and influential citizen."

Boston Transcript, 11/12/1924: W.B.B.N.: "We will follow but the son Jonas. This name, plainly legible to anyone familiar with old script, has been variously translated as Josias, Josiah, etc. he married at Lancaster, Feb. 15, 1681, mary Burbean of Woburn. His widow at his death was Sarah. Jonas died at lancaster, Sept. 20, 1723. An agreement of the heirs drawn up Oct 29, 1723 states that the family consisted of: Sarah, widow and children: Jonas, Benjamin, Daniel, James, Josiah, deceased, who left posthumous child, Stephen; Mary, wife of Gamaliel Beamans; Sarah, wife of Francis Richardson; Dorcas Coomer (this last name perhaps incorrect, very illegible); Eunice, wife of Ephraim Sawyer; Ruth, wife of Richard Wilder, and Jemima, unmarried."

Boston Transcript, 11/17/1924: G.A.G.L.: Jonas Houghton, Jr., was appointed administrator of his estate, and the various heirs mentioned are: Jonas, the
eldest son, Benjamin, Daniel, James, Josiah, a posthumous son of Josiah, deceased, Stephen, Mary, the wife of Gamaliel Beman; Sarah, the wife of Francis Richardson; Dorcas, the wife of Ebenezer Polley; Eunice the wife of Ephraim Sawyer; Ruth the wife of Richard Wilder; Jemimah, the wife of Samuel Carter. The names of the foregoing children and heirs are given in the division of real estate June 17, 1726 --vide No.11,933 document 27 in Middlesex Probate Records.

MLM, Weis: They settled on Vaughn's hill, part of Lancaster, now Bolton. Indian fighter, surveyor, farmer, influential citizen. Taxed in 1688 for the new parsonage. Was in the garrison at Lancaster , Mar. 18, 1691/2, and a proprietor of the additional grant. Served in Queen Anne's War; Lost an ox when the Indians raided Lancaster, 1704.^{13,24,45,28,21}

Research

Chandler: "Observe that the Lancaster VR have "Josiah" son of "Josiah" and Mary born 1682 "Jul" 2! I'd say that one original record has to be the source of both of these people. [CJV: John's sons Jonas and Josiah] This takes the pressure off the seeming double identity of Jonas[2]'s son Josiah[3], whose gravestone extrapolates to a birth date in 1698 Oct."⁴⁶
