Research1861Van King: A John C. Houghton was a mineralogist for the Second Maine Geological Survey for 1861. His absence was noted by the authors of the next year's report, but they did not say why. I believe that John Cephas could be the man. The 1861 position was essentially a summer job and he entered the Bangor (Maine) Theological Seminary that fall. My only interest is making some sense of whom the staff of the survey was. JCH reported some odd minerals from Maine, but he does not seem to have been the originator of those reports. As a mineralogist, I have wondered about his reasons for making the list and I suspect it was merely at the direction of the survey leaders and the reports do specify that MOST of the minerals reported were from secondary sources and that his role was that of a compiler. He probably was a "beast of burden" for the survey crew. At Amherst he undoubtedly received training in mineralogy and the survey position was filled to help a struggling student make some money before going for advanced theological studies. In particular, I am writing a trilogy of histories of mining and geological studies in Maine and the Second Survey is of some interest to me.
