Biography

According to H. P. Smith in his History of Essex County, NY., Jonah Bruce had fourteen children. We have been unable to positively identify several children.
Sally (Houghton) Bmce's father, Seth Houghton, died at Baltimore, Vt. on 4 May 1815. His son Lemuel was appointed administrator of his estate. His wife was Sally. (Seth Houghton and Sally Wheeler were manied at Fitchburg, Mass. in 1781.) Eleven of Seth's children, nine sons and two daughters, were heirs of his estate. His daughters were Sally Bmce and Rebecca Bmce. Rebecca manied, ca. 1814 or earlier, Joseph Bruce, a younger brother of Jonah Bruce. Jonah Bruce's parents, Benjamin and Philadelphia, relocated from Baltimore, Vt. to Jay, N.Y. soon after selling their land in Baltimore on 15 Aug. 1804. Jonah knew Sally while both were living at Baltimore. They may have been manied there. All of their children were bom at Jay, Essex County, N.Y. Jonah probably relocated to Jay along with his parents, late in 1804. Jonah served in the War of 1812 from 2 to 14 Sep. 1814, seeing action at the battle of Plattsburg on 11 Sep. 1814. He was a private in the Company of Capt. Lewis Torrence.

J.W.Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, (quoting from Appendix of F.M. Rice Report of 1848), p. 20: "Theobald, who married Maud, daughter of Robert le Vavasor and had issue: Theobald, who married Maud, sister of Thomas A. Becket. He was sheriff of Lancashire 1195 to 1199, inclusive. In 1177 he was made Chief Butler of Ireland by Henry II, when he assumed the name of Boteler, or butler, and from him descended the Butlers, Earls of Ormand."

Sheriff of Lancashire 1195 to 1199. In 1177 he was made Chief Butler of Ireland by Henry II, when he assumed the official surname of Pincerna. In 1221 he first assumed the name of Boteler, or Butler, and from him descended the Butlers, Earls of Ormand. Charters of Theobold Walter founding Cockersand Abbey, Lancashire and Wethany Abbey, Limeric from which is learned that Herveius Walter was his father, Hubert Walter, Archbishop of Canterbury, his brother. He was the first Butler of Ireland. During time of Henry II. Also possessed the barony of Amoundernesa, Lancashire, which he held 1165 by service of one knight.

The Butlers bore the arms of the De Glanville: a chief indented; merely varing the tinctures.^1,2
