He died I Ed. 3, 1340, having...a little increased the estate by meanss of his wife, Sibyll, sister and heiress of Henry de Lea, who was owner of the manor of Molington Banastre, in Chestershire, in right of Clementia, daughter of Robert Banstre, Baron of Newton, and wife of William de Lea, who recieved the name from her father in frank marriage, and although these Leas sometimes sealed with five mascles, in band for arms, and differed in writing their names, yet were they nevertheless cadets of the first dynasty of the Lancasters, primitively Barons of Kendal, and lineally descended from Ivo Taylboys, Count of Anjou, and Baron of Kendall, whose wife, Lucia, was sister and Heiress of Edwin [and Morcar, Earls of Northumbria, temp. William Conqueror. Their usual arms were argent 3 bars sable, the reverse of which colours, the family of Hoghton now bears. [CJV: given as son of Adam de Hoghton and Avicia de Howicke]"

JWH: p. 22-23: "Richard, who inherited estate of his cousin Richard, aforesaid, and became a knight. In 1323 he and Sir Gilbert Singleton were returned Knights of the Shire for the County of Lancashire, in the Parliament held at York, and they had their wages allowed for attendance--a notable circumstance, as members of Parliament now recieve no renumeration for their services. In 1327 he paid 13 shillings sixpence for a third part of one Knight's fee in Hoghton, Cleton, Penwortham, Wheeltoncum, Hepay, which he held of the Duchy of Lancaster, and which Richard de Cleton and Richard de Feton held before. In the same year he and Edmund de Nevyle served as Knights of the Shire for Lancashire, as also in 1338. In 1313 he married Sybil, daughter of William and sister of Henry de Lea. This marriage brought a large increase to the Hoghton estates, for the Leas had great possessions, and were owners of Lea, Mollington, Banistre, in Cheshire, in right of Clementia, daughter of Robert Banistre, Baron of Manaton, and wife of William de Lea, who received the same from her father in frank-marriage. These Leas though they sometimes sealed with five Muscles in Bend, for their arms, and differed in the writing of their names, yet they were, nevertheless, a cadet of the first dynasty of the Lancasters, primitively Barons of Kendal, in Westmoreland, and lineal descendants of Ivo Talbois, Earl of Anjou, in France, and Barons of Kendal in the time of William the Conqueror. Thir usual arms were argent, three bars sable, and the reverse of these colors, it will be perceived, the family of Hoghton now bear, though the precise date of the change is not known. Sir Richard died in 1341."

Knight of the Shire under Edward the II (1307-1327) and twice in 16 Ed II, died 14 Ed III (1327-1377).

Their property is now in the possession of his descendants."'

J.W. Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, p. 3-4:
..."the name Houghton originally De Hocton, is supposed to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Hocton or Hoctune, signifying 'High-town,' or 'High placee,' and was taken from one of the manors of the family in Lancashire, England, remarkable for its lofty situation.

The possessor of this estate, Willus De Hocton, or as sometimes written Willus Dominus De Hocton, assumed the name of this manor about the year 1140. He was the first to bear it and probably from him have descended the Houghtons of today. His son or grandson was perhaps not satisfied with the spelling for we find the later style, as Adam De Hoghton."5,6,2

J.W. Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, (quoting from Appendix of F.M. Rice Report of 1848), p. 20: "Hamo Pincerna, married Maud, daughter of Richard Bussel, second Baron of Penwortham, in Lancashire. At this marriage her father gave to Hamo the Manor of Hocton. It was thus that the township of Hocton came into the possession of the Hocton or Hoghton family, as the name afterward was spelled. Eccleston, in the eastern part of Lancashire, was also added to his daughter's dowry, by Richard Bussel. Some genealogists trace the descent back through Maud, the wife, to her father, Richard Bussell, or as others give it, Warren Bussell, and her grandfather, Roger de Busti (or Bussell), joint Lord of Blackburn in the time of William the Conquerer, A.D. 1066. Which is the more accurate I am unable to determine, but on either supposition the Manor of Hocton, from which the family took its name, came into possession in the 3rd generation from the coming of the original progenitor into England."

De Hocton means of (de) high (hoc) town (ton).7,3

In the reign of Stephen, he witnessed a Charter of Bartholomew de Glanville for Bromholm Priory. A noble, in time of Henry III, granted lands to St. Osyth's, Essex, for the soul of Hervey de Glanville, the grandfather of his wife. In 1155 Hervey de Glanville and Ranulph de G. witnessed the foundation Charter of Snapes, Essex. ResearchApr, 2004Current descendency of Hervey Walter in Houghton Project is based on two pedigrees of de Hoghtons of Hoghton Tower sent to author by current Baronet of Hoghton Tower, Bernard de Hoghton. These two pedigrees have some conflictual data. It appears that pedigree listed in 1912 Houghton Genealogy is based on data obtained by F. M. Rice for the Houghton Association in 1848. Mr. Rice clearly visited Hoghton Tower and saw the original pedigrees, given the almost identical pedigree data of Sir Bernard's pedigrees and those in the 1912 Genealogy.
Sir Bernard:
As I have always understood it the early sequence goes like this Herve de Walter was a Companion of William the Conqueror,he had a son Hervey de Walter who in turn had several sons including Hamo Pincerna. William was his eldest son but he inherited the East Anglian properties and we believe founded that branch of the family.Richard the younger son received basically his mother's inheritance ie Hoghton and Eccleston both in Lancashire. This means that I and my branch of the family come from Richard who had the son Adam and started calling the family de Hoghton. Yes it is correct to write de Hoghton and not De Hoghton which is not correct. Basically it means of and Hoghton means high wooded settlement hill if that is any help. Regarding the two Family Trees, the one with the full Coat of Arms is not only the up to date one ie current but is the Formally recognised one whilst the other is older and more detailed so I thought you might find them both interesting as well as helpful.

General Statement of Hoghton family pedigree: The de Hoghtons are of ancient lineage, descended from Harvey de Walter, one of the companions of William the Conqueror, and through the female line from the Lady Godiva of Coventry, wife of Leofric III the Great, Earl of Mercia. After the third generation from the Norman Conquest, Richard and William de Hoghton first assumed the family name around 1150. The great-grandson, Sir Adam de Hoghton, was knighted and died in 1290.

Sir Richard de Hoghton 1316-1345, Knight of the Shire in the Parliaments of 1322-27-37. Married Sybilla de Lea, direct descendant of the Lady Godiva, whose lands in Lea still form part of the Hoghton Estates. Warden of the Ports, knighted by Edward III in 1336 and given permission to empark in 1327. It was from Lea Hall (his private residence), that Thomas Hoghton went into exile in 1569, having re-built Hoghton Tower 1560-1565.

Note: There is a Master Richard de Hoghton 1290-1316, Sheriff of Lancaster 1282, 1291 & 1301 mentioned in the brochure as a predecessor of this Richard. May have been an uncle.3

BiographyPedigree: " fl. T. R. Henry I."

J.W.Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, (quoting from Appendix of the F. M. Rice Report of 1848), p. 19: Herverus. "Among those who came over with William the Conquerer from Normandy to England, in the year 1066, was a man bearing the name of "Herverus." After the great battle of Hastings, this Herverus obtained large possessions in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lancashire. He had two sons and one daughter."

J. W. Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, (quoting from R.H. Curtis, Corning, N.Y.), p. 67: "Mr. R. H. Curtis, of Corning, N.Y....traces the descent from Roger de Busti, joint Lord of Blackburn, the first generation; then to his son, Warren Bussell, the second generation, and to his daughter, who married Hamo Pincerna, and from this last his record agrees with that obtained by Mr. Rice. Mr. Curtis's record, however says that Hamo was a direct descendant of Herrocines Watter, who came to England with William the Conqueror. I suspect it amounts to a little difference in spelling the names, and that through the male line we arrive at the same ancestor."

According to Phillips book, The Norman People, was granted lands in Reuchcliffe, Thistleton, Greenhale, Lancashire to Ormus, son of Magnus, which Ormus witnessed in a charter of Richard Bussel, baron of Penworthham. Appears in 1086 as owner of estates in Lailand, Lancashire (Domesday). He is styled in a charter of Warin Bussel, baron of Penwortham, granted to Evesham
Abbey.

Family of Glanville, near Caen. About 1064, Rainaid de Glanville witnessed a charter of Roger de Mowbray in favor of Holy Trinity. Had issue: 1. Robert de Glanville, who in 1086 had possessions in Suffolk and was ancestor of William de G., whose barony in Suffolk, 1165 consisted of 9 and a half fees. 2. Walter, ancestor of the Butlers. Hence spring the Marquises of Ormond, Earls of Carrick, Viscounts Mountgarret. Barons Dunboyne and so on.

Hoghton Tower: The de Hogthons are descended directly from Harvey de Walter and through the female line from the Lady Godiva of Coventry, wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia.
