Westminster Probate Court, Bellows Falls, Windham Co., VT, USA, MLM: "Word has been received by Alexander Houghton of 511 Center Street, Sioux City, Iowa, from administrators of the estate of his grandfather, Royal Houghton in Windham County, Vermont, that he is one of ten heirs to property that is valued at around sixty-two million dollars. Alexander is the son of the late Lewis Houghton [CJV: 1907 death], son of Royal Houghton. The estate in question comprises property in New York City, in New England, and in England, most of which has been leased for 99 years. These leases are now expiring, and unless litigiation results an immediate division will be made. Under the terms of some leases courts have decided that ownership reverts to the holder of the lease at its expiration. Mr. Houghton is under the impression, however, from the nature of the letter received, that there will be no suit necessary to regain full title to the property. Other heirs are: Frank Houghton of Chicago; Myron A. Wiley, formerly of Castana, now of Spokane, Washington; Marian Houghton of Sioux City, wife of Alexander Houghton; Alexander Carter, Tucumcar, New Mexico; Preston L. Wiley and Grace Wiley of Saxtons River, Vermont; Blanche Houghton, of Denver, Colorado; Agnes Houghton, Woodhull, Illinois; and Edwin Houghton of Galesburg, Illinois." "Note: Jennie Applegate said that Frank's share amounted to less than $100.00. Myron A. Wiley invested the proceeds of Royal's unsold piece of property in 100,000 acres of Alberta, Canada, wheatland. M. McC.""An administrator having been appointed March 18, 1914 for the unsold piece of property according to the probate court record of January 4, 1938 letter: "No further proceedings have ever been made on the estate."¹⁴

Biography

MLM: He probably inherited his father's farm. A farmer by nature. His estate was settled March 4, 18--. He died by drowning in the mill stream on his property in Houghtonville, possibly a suicide, as his strong-willed wife and the girls had induced him to sell the farm, and he had erected a home on the outskirts of Saxtons River, Vermont, which burned in ca. 1937. He seemed to be of good spirits on his last day and night on the old homestead, according to a granddaughter, Miss Grace Amanda Wiley, but his body was found in the millstream on the morning of September 28th, 1866.¹⁴

In a chapter of J.W. Houghton, compiled by R. Houghton Curtis, of Corning NY p.67, the latter branches off from the line in the 12th generation, neglecting the eldest child, Sir Richard, who succeeded to the titles and estate, and follows the line of the next brother Henry, and his wife Jane Ratcliff (also given as Jeanette Radcliff).
