BiographyJudy Lock: Notes for Alfred Stephen Houghton:
The Central Hotel of Junction City, Kansas has a capacity for entertaining about 50 guests and enjoys a good trade because of its general excellence. As an early settler in this area, Alfred S. Houghton conducted a first-class livery stable in Junction City and later purchased the hotel in that town. He made a specialty of matching teams of horses for sale. He dealt in high-finance blooded stock. He always had a large number of exceptionally fast-movers and was known as the best dealer in raising, buying and selling horses and cattle in the West. He was born in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, on October 25,1845, on a farm and like other New England farm boys, spent his time feeding chickens, milking the cows and driving oxen. His school days were spent at the Lunenburg Common Schools, Appleton Academy New - Ipswich, New Hampshire and at Fitchburg, Massachusetts Commercial School. When 13 years of age he clerked in a store in Shirley Village a short time, but when he reached his 18th year he started for California to seek his fortune in the gold fields, paying $225 for a first-cabin passenger ship from New York to San Francisco. [From a written history about coming around the Horn to California about 1862: the meals were salt beef, sea bread and black tea sweetened with East Boston brown sugar. Of the voyage, the Captain promises better. It could not have been worse.] While on the coast he was engaged in driving cattle and sheep from Stockton, California, to Austin, Reese River, Nevada, with Major and John Bradle and a number of others. He crossed the Sierra Nevada Mountains 16 times on the Big Tree Route. It was said they built a house on one stump --32 feet across. At that time an exhibition was made in New England of the barks of two trees taken to the height of 50 feet, which was not more than a third of the distance to the top. MI. Houghton said he did not measure the distance but he rode into a hollow tree on horseback and turned around after reconnoitering.
After being in the mines of Virginia City and Austin he began freighting with a train of three wagons drawn by horses and mules from Sacramento to Austin. Freight charges from Virginia City to Austin, Nevada, were only 10 cents a pound. In this freighting enterprise his companion was Mr. Marshall-- the man who first discovered gold in California. From Sacramento he and Mr. Marshall hauled loads of wine and fruit to Austin. He was at Carson, Nevada the time Curly Bill drove Horace Greeley over a Sierra stage route and came near frightening the later to death before he reached Placerville to make a campaign speech. Mr. Houghton himself drove turkeys over the same route and experienced as much trouble as Greeley, as when there were any trees in the vicinity at nightfall, the turkeys invariable "went straight up." After remaining three years in California, ASH returned to Massachusetts but remained there only a short time before coming to Kansas and settling in Manhattan where he took a contract for carrying government mail to Lake Sibley, during which service, several exciting experiences occurred, among others the capture of Mrs. Morgan and Miss White by Indians, who killed several white people. Mr. Houghton was within six miles of the scene which is now the location of Concordia. He was interested in cattle which were driven from Waco, Texas, to Abilene, Kansas, while Wild Bill was marshal of Abilene. Later, Mr. Houghton moved his family to his farm in Massachusetts and they remained there for seven years while he shipped cattle and horses from Canada and the West to his farm and to Boston.
Alfred S. Houghton has a brother named Albert L. Houghton who was with him in Junction City and in Manhattan. ASH continues in the stock business, owning some very fast trotters and will ship a car load to Lawton, Oklahoma where he expects to make his future on a farm.
MI. Houghton has three daughters, Miss Lura B. Houghton, now residing with his sister, Mrs. G. S. Pierce at Fitchburg, Mass; Mrs. R. J. Brock of Manhattan and Mrs. C. M. Buck of Topeka. One son, Ernest A., is in Trinidad, Colorado. His other son, Albert S., and a brother Albert L. Houghton, are with him in Junction City, Kansas at present, while he has a sister, Mrs. 0. M. Bennett at Shirley Center, Massachusetts, and a brother G. B. Houghton at Lunenburg, Massachusetts.

Alfred Stephen Houghton, known as Fred was 18 years old in 1863 when he left for California. His older brother Jonas was already out west, probably mining in Austin, Nevada. Fred stayed in California and Nevada for three
years and probably left when his brother Jonas died either on Jan. 3, 1867 or Nov. 6, 1867.
His obituary says he was in Manhattan, Kansas around 1867. His brother Albert L. was Sheriff of Riley County. Alfred Stephen Houghton married his first wife in 1869, and his second wife in 1903.

He and his brother Albert had made the Oklahoma "Run" when the territory was opened up for homesteading. Perhaps he was one of the lucky ones.

However, instead of moving to Oklahoma he married Ida L. Meyer in 1903, and made their home in Manhattan, Kansas. Alfred had a beard until he married Ida. She didn't like it, so from that time on he kept it shaved.
After he died she sold his livery stable for $3,000. It was torn down in 1918 and replaced with a new building that housed the Moore Car Dealership. The corner that it was on is now also gone, as the city of Manhattan incorporated several blocks into a downtown mall.

From the Mercury newspaper, September 10, 1884: "Harry Wareham and A.S. Houghton have formed a co-partnership, we understand, and will commence the building of a skating rink in the walls of Keables' old carriage factory."

From the Nationalist newspaper, April 4, 1890: Houghton Building. "The second story of the new Houghton building is ready for the opening of court on Monday."

From the Nationalist: November 5, 1903. A. S. Houghton ill.

Bud Horton said that his mother, Lura, who was Alfred Stephen's daughter from his first marriage, related that Buffalo Bill stayed with the Houghton family several times when she was growing up. He bought horses from her father. Alfred Stephen also personally knew Wild Bill Hickok. This helps confirm what my father, Edwin Houghton told me about Buffalo Bill coming to the house when he was a boy.

Bud said that west of Manhattan the carnivals would park their equipment. He wondered if it was Buffalo Bill's company. -.-Edwina

November 21, 1996 --I went to Manhattan, and found information that ASH owned land 1014 Houston, which was eventually sold to his daughter Mayme and her husband R. Brock. The lady, Dr. Dixie West who now lives in the house on that property at 1014 Houston calls a certain room on the second floor the nursery. I wonder if it wasn't the Brock's little girl, Adelaid's room. Sadly she died very young and they never had another child. --Edwina

Alfred Houghton was the co-executor of the will of James Fones Gardner, his father-in-law - mountains of paperwork there. He was threatened to be sued for not paying the legacies and was ordered to court several times, once by the GAR Post in Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas, for not distributing their $100.00 legacy.
