The story of Leonard Longanecker by Nancy Larsen
8/2/2008
Several days ago, I got an email from a total stranger, Monica M. (below), who had found a possible link between her half brother, Darryl, and our Uncle Jim Morgan’s granddaughter, Margaret Uran, who had a son named Vaughn. Uncle Jim was the brother of Martha Morgan Hauser and son of Hardin Morgan.
Monica had found our Margaret and Leonard Longanecker and their son, Vaughn listed in my Morgan family tree. She asked for any information that I might have. Her brother, Darryl had been trying to find information on possible siblings. Previously to this, he did not know about Vaughn.
I sent her all of the info I had, including the story from The Morgan Genealogy and everything that I had found while searching the many available databases. According to Monica, Leonard left Darryl’s mother (and her mother) and married Margaret Uran, Our cousin, Vaughn, was born in October of 1947, seven months after Darryl was born. Leonard had left at least one other son behind, prior to leaving Darryl and his mom.
And after a time, Leonard left Margaret and Vaughn. Monica discovered through various searches that he subsequently may have had two more wives and possibly three daughters (by the first of these two wives). This is still under investigation. As time went by, we both found more information. Vaughn is alive and living with his wife in Oregon, at the same address for many years.
Well, some stories have a happy ending. Monica called Vaughn’s home and has established contact with Darryl’s long lost brother, who has been looking for his siblings, too. According to later communications with Vaughn, he located his father, Leonard, prior to his death and has forgiven him. Vaughn and his family are very devoted Christians.
PS- 9/2008: Vaughn and Darryl have now met!!! See picture below.

Emails from Monica:

My name is Monica M. My mother’s name was P. S. Longanecker. She was married to Leonard Longanecker Jr. They had a son (my brother Darryl) born in March 1947. Len left my mom when she was pregnant with my brother. She did not know what happened to him.
I see that Len was married to a Margaret, who is part of your family tree. I know that Len also had a son who is older than my brother.

Thank you for your time.

I am not sure when Leonard and my mom were married. I know he married a woman named D. B. S. in Jan 1940 I found the vital record on ancestry.com as well as the vital recordfor a son born in Feb 1942. I think that his name is Cifford. My mom had a picture of him for years.

In Dec. 1946, Len dropped my older sisters and my mom at the movies in E. C., CA. He and my mom both worked at a mortuary. He told my mom that he had some work to do at the mortuary, that he would pick them up when the movie was over. They got out of the show and waited and waited for Len to pick them up. At the time E. C. was a small town. A police officer stopped and asked my mom if she and the girls needed a ride home. When they got home they found a note saying he was leaving. He took everything they owned. My brother Darryl was born on 9 March 1947. Leonard married Margaret on 25 Jan. 1947. He was still married to my mom.

My mom told me that sometime in the late 40’s a man who was a physician hired to private eye to try and find Len. She was told that he had married the doctor’s daughter (Margaret) and left her just like he did my mom. I found the wedding announcementfor Margaret and Len and it stated that she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Uran.

I found someone named M. J. M. married a Leonard Longanecker on 1 Oct 1955. I am not sure if it is the same man or not. They lived in Ohio and had 3 daughters D. S., born 23 Jan 1958, J. born 16 June 1959 and J. K., born 11 July 1960. He married a woman in California named C. W. on 17 July 1977.

When I got older I found out that my mom and dad had to wait years before they were legally married. She never could find Len to get a divorce and his family told my mom they had no idea where he was. So Leonard had three sons, C. D. born in 1942, my brother Darryl and Vaughn. I did not know for a long time that Darryl and I did not have the same dad.

I was also able to find Vaughn listed in Oregon. I called the number and spoke to his wife. She was very nice. She told me that they had been searching for any siblings that Vaughn might have. I will share any info I find out on Vaughn and his family with you.
I called Darryl and told him of my findings, he was so happy. I told him how you had helped me, he told me to tell you thank you. I need to run. I want to call my sisters C. and PO. and let them know what I found out. Take care, and thank you again.
Monica

JWH, p. 27-28: "Thomas, the younger, half-brother to Thomas, the elder. This Thomas was born in 1541 and was killed in 1589. In 1564 he was Sheriff of Lancashire. On the 21st of November, 1589, Thomas Langton, of Newton, commonly called the Baron of Walton and Newton, with a company of eight gentlemen and yeoman, armed themselves with "'Long Pickes' gunnes, long staves, daggers, bows and arrows, Welsh hookes upon long staves," and marched from Preston to Lea Hall, the seat of Thomas Hoghton, "to do him some displeasure,""being incited thereto by a pre-existing feud about some cattle." Thomas awaited the attack with some thirty friends, tenants, etc.
The watchword of Langton was, "The crow is white"; that of Hoghton was "Black is black." A desperate affray ensued in which Thomas Hoghton and Richard Waldroin, of Langton's company, were slain, but by whom does not appear. All the official documents respecting this affair are preserved in the British Museum, and are quite curious and interesting. Thomas Langton was arrested by the Earl of Derby, but it is said that he compounded with the Hoghton family by giving up Walton. At least Walton Le Dale has ever since remained in possession of the Hogthon family. This Thomas Hoghton built Hoghton Tower, during the reign of Queeen Elizabeth, from a quarry of stone in the hill on which the Tower stands. He married Anne, daughter of Henry Kighley, Esq. This Thomas was the third son of Sir Richard; the oldest son, also named Thomas, was his half-brother, and the second son was Alexander. The older Thomas had a daughter, Jane, who married James Bradsaw. As a result of a lengthy lawsuit, Alexander won the right of succession of the estate over the claim of James Bradshaw. As Alexander left no issue, the younger Thomas succeeded to the estate.

Thomas had built Hoghton Tower in 1565 (see JWH, p. 28-32 for description), in Lancaster, earlier in the reign of Elizabeth."
