Uran: "Lucy Mary always called Mattie. M. Henry Purmont. Henry Purmont was a lumber dealer in Chicago. Lillie Houghton and Lydia May Houghton-Morgan visited Mrs. Purmont in 1920. In 1923 Mrs. Morgan visited the home again. The Purmonts were both deceased, having no heirs they had willed their home to a faithful negro maid who had lived with them. It was during the race riots in Chicago and the negro maid was afraid to go outside her home. It is thought by some of the relatives that an infant son of the Purmonts died when young. No record has been found of such a child."9,3

ResearchLawrence H. Bentley vs Brian Manson theory:
The attached shows why I believe Brian Manson to be wrong. Because of a lack of records, all conclusions are circumstantial. However, I believe that the weight of evidence points to William Bentley who died in Kings Towne in 1720 as being the William Bentley who sailed on the ARABELLA in 1671 and who was my ancestor.
I also believe that the William Bentley who married Mary Elliot in Stonington on April 21, 1703 came from Massachusetts and possibly was descended from the William Bentley who sailed on the TRUELOVE in 1635.

PASSENGERS TO AMERICA Selected excerpts from the NRHGR. Same information as above

From what I can determine there were three male Bentleys who sailed from England to New England during the time period 1635-1671.

               WILLIAM BENTLEY OF RHODE ISLAND

ONE BRANCH OF THE BENTLEY FAMILY OF RHODE ISLAND Emilie Sarter 1953
Pages V-XV Introduction. Sarter sets forth in detail, with references, why she believes that John Osborne Austin (1849-1918) THE GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF RHODE ISLAND mixed up the William Bentleys and erroneously showed William Bentley Jr., son of William Bentley and Sarah (either Eldred or Leithfield, or unknown last name) marrying Mary Elliot of Stonington. It has been well documented that William Jr. first married a woman named Elizabeth about 1800 and second married Bathsheba Greene Lewis, widow of Israel Lewis on August 1, 1734.

Pages 91-103 of the RHODE ISLAND GENELOGICAL REGISTER by Alden G. Beaman Oct. 1978, Beaman states that William Bentley was born about 1652 of Kingstown and his Inventory was taken 11 July 1720. He states that William married Sarah and that her last name was unknown but not Liethfield. He lists the children as named in the will. Beaman was also a descendant of this William Bentley and spent many years researching Rhode Island records trying to prove the ancestry of William. Stewarts work follows Beaman and accepts most of it except for the origin of William. Unfortunately, because of a fire in the Bank where the Kingstown records were kept, there are very few records from 1652.

GENEALOGICAL CLASSIFICATION BY FAMILY GROUP CODING FOR DESCENT FROM COMON ANCESTORS Vol. II 1986 Cameron Ralph Stewart. Volume II is Bentley Family Genealogy. On page 1054 Stewart states that "there is not the slightest evidence where William Bentley (1) of Kingstown came from or just when he arrived in the country." Stewart accepts and repeats Sarter's information. On Page 1069 and others he gives circumstantial information that William, who settled in Rhode Island, was christened on Sept. 13, 1640 in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England. Factually, he died before July 11,1720, the date his will was sealed, in Kings Towne, Colony of Rhode Island. On Pg. 1041 Stewart cites a copy of a bible record on file at the Rhode Island Historical Society that contains the information "William Bently Born in Amphill in Bedfordshire England and departed this Life in Kingstown 83 yrs and 11 days of His age"---. Stewart cites much other information to support his suggestion that the William Bentley who sailed on the ARABELLA was the William Bentley who settled in Rhode Island. Since publication of his book, Stewart has been to England and discovered additional proof of the parents of William. Most historians and genealogists accept that this William Bentley was the passenger on the ARABELLA. Most important, he appears to have been born in 1640, which is after 1635 when the other William Bentley previously sailed to America. Since the William born in 1640 in Ampthill is the only Bentley who fits the 1671 sailing on the ARABELLA, there is strong circumstantial evidence that this William is the William who settled in Kings Towne, Colony of Rhode Island.

William settled in the present day area of Wickford, RI and established a tanning house. His first child, Jane was born in 1675 and son William Jr. on July 8, 1677. In 1678 he is compensated for "Carrying ye Chains" for surveying and in 1679 he signed a petition to King Charles II. In 1709 he purchased land in present day Exeter, RI. Through land record research I have been able to establish the location of this land.

This William Bentley is my ancestor with a well documented line of descent. His son William Jr. was born July 8, 1677 and grandson William born May 29, 1735. There were four other William Bentleys born in Rhode Island during this time period to siblings of William Jr.

               WILLIAM BENTLEY OF LEBANON

HISTORY OF STONINGTON CONNECTICUT Richard Anson Wheeler 1900 Unfortunately, Wheeler repeats the Austin mistake on page 233. He states that William came on the ARABELLA and then goes on to state that he married Mary Eliot on Apr. 21, 1703 in Stonington. It is true that a William Bentley married Mary Elliot of Stonington but it was a different William Bentley than the son of the William who settled in Rhode Island. All the William Bentleys, who were living in Rhode Island Colony in 1703, old enough to have married Mary Elliot are accounted for. It was not until the mid 1700's that the family of George Bentley, son of William, Jr. settled in Stonington.

HISTORY OF THE FIRST CHURCH OF STONINGTON Richard Anson Wheeler There are several baptism records for the children of William and Mary Bentley of Lebanon. There are deeds on record in Stonington whereby Mary Elliot Bentley of Lebanon deeds land to her brother that she inherited from her father. There are not other Bentleys in the Stonington Land Records until 1751 when George Bentley Jr. of Westerly, married Amy Cartee of Stonington.

William Bentley of Lebanon is Brian Manson's ancestor. I believe I gave Brian the information on April 12, 2000 by Email that his William came from Dorchester. There is a manuscript titled WILLIAM BENTLEY, YEOMAN OF LEBANON, CONN. by Mrs. Edward M. Bentley that I have not read that may provide additional information. I also told Brian of two other documents at Salt Lake that pertain to the Lebanon Bentleys.

                    SUMMARY
My query to you was an attempt to see if additional information existed about the ancestors of William Bentley of Lebanon. My goal was, if possible, to clear up the confusion between William Bentley of Lebanon and William Bentley of Rhode Island. Yes, there were two contemptuous Williams who may or may not have been related plus other cousins also named William. At present there appears to be two different, though possibly related lines. Possibly one came from Cambridgeshire and one from Bedfordshire. However your information about Williams death in Narraganset before 1703 appears to be incorrect. The earliest date I have found for the death of a William Bentley in Rhode Island is 1720.

Most descendants of William of Rhode Island accept that the assumption that William arrived in America in 1671 and died in Kings Town during 1720. Also, that neither he nor any of his descendants married Mary Elliot of Stonington.

The entire area of Rhode Island Colony where William Bentley settled was known, in his day, as Narragansett Country. It was named after the local Indian Tribe. Kings Towne was first settled in 1636 and was incorporated on October 28, 1674. The village of Narragansett is located within the present day town of South Kingstown and did not keep independent records.

I hope that I have not confused the issue. Only a few documents from the 1700s have survived because of the fire, which destroyed the early Kingstown records. At best we can only take what few documents there are and build a circumstantial case to support an argument based on the weight of the evidence. I defer to Mr. Stewart in this case.
