at the age of 14, went into a lumber camp in northern MI. He spent 4 years preparing logs to be sent down the river. In 1886 he went to North Dakota. He homesteaded in 1887 and filed on 1/4 of section 32-146-59 and then pre-empted for a quarter of section 5 in Bald Hill Twp.⁴

Obituary

The Courier is again called upon to chronicle the death of one of its citizens, Mrs. Western Houghton, who died last Thursday morning February 6th 1902, about 7 a.m., after a sickness of three weeks. The Deceased gave birth to little twin daughters a short time ago. For the first week she appeared to be getting along all right but complications set in to which she finally succumbed. Nina E. Blanchard was married to Western Houghton February 18, 1900, she was 36 years old last April. As a result of this union six children have been born all of whom are now alive to mourn the loss of their mother. The loss is indeed great to the stricken husband and little children who need the guiding hand and care of the mother. Sympathy does not go far in cases like this, yet it is certainly extended to the bereaved ones by the whole community. The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon in the M.E. church, Rev. C.A. Hughes, officiating. The remains were interred in the Cooperstown cemetery.⁴
