BiographyRobert Emmett Craig Service: Civil War, 85th Regiment. Major Robert Emmett Craig, Sr. was born 1831 in IN. His father was Dr. Thomas Emmett Craig his mother was Mary Elizabeth Welsh. Robert Craig died on 02 Apr 1864 in Murfreesboro, TN. and was buried in Rockville, Parke Co. Indiana in an in-town cemetery. Robert Criag bought the plots there in April, 1862. Robert Craig married, on 04 Aug 1857 in Licking Co. Ohio, Helen M. Houghton, who was born 10 Nov 1835 in NY. Her father was Joseph W. Houghton and her mother was Sally Warner. Helen Houghton Craig died on 06 Jun 1860/1861 in Newport, Vermillion Co. IN. after the birth of her second child. The child died also. Robert Emmett Craig, Jr. was born 17 Aug 1858. He was called Bertie. He married Bess Graham. Mary J. Craig was born about 1860 in Newport, Vermillion Co., IN. and died shortly after her birth, as did her mother, Helen Craig. As a second wife, Robert Emmett Craig, Sr. married Juliet Houghton who was born about 1828 - 1833 in Oswego, NY. Juliet had come to care for her ailing sister and the new child. They were married 07 Nov 1861 in Vermillion Co., IN. Juliet's parents were also Joseph W. Houghton and Sally Warner. Juliet Houghton Craig died 18 Nov 1888 in Deadwood, Lawrence Co., SD. and was buried in Indiana. No marker was in the Rockville cemetery near Robert Craig's grave, nor was there a marker for Helen Craig and the baby. The obit in the SD. paper said that the body was sent by train to Indiana. Helen H. Craig was born 08 Dec 1862 in Rockville (Terre Haute), IN. to Robert and Juliet Houghton Craig. Helen died 29 Dec 1942 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co. IA. while visiting her daughter, my grandmother, Fanny Lambert Irons. Helen was buried on 31 Dec 1942 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co. IN. Helen Craig married Henry Clay Lambert, who was born 01 Apr 1856 in Bloomfield, Davis Co. IA. They were married 09 Aug 1883 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co. IN. Clay Lambert's parents were William Seymour (Sperry) Lambert, Sr. and Olive Jane Benge. Clay Lambert died 16 Jan 1934- 1935 in New York, NY. (Flowers Hospital) and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co. IN. By 1860, Robert Emmett and Helen Houghton Craig were in Newport, (Bellair), Indiana, where Robert was in the practice of law. The 1860 Federal Census for Newport, Vermillion Twp, Vermillion Co. IN. shows Robert Craig, with Helen M Houghton Craig, Robert E. Craig, Mary J. Craig, and Juliet Houghton (school teacher). Helen Houghton Craig died June 6, 1860, as a result of the birth of her daughter Mary J. Craig, who died also. Helen's sister, Juliet Houghton, came to help care for her sister and family when they needed help. Evidently she was comfortable there, and eventually Juliet and Robert Emmett were married, on November 7, 1861. Robert needed someone to care for his son, Robert Emmett, Jr. especially with the coming of the War of the Rebellion. On April 15, 1862 Robert Emmett Craig bought Lot #188 in the 2nd Addition of the Rockville Graveyard, in Rockville, IN. The following military information is from a regimental history of the 85th. Robert Craig raised a company of volunteers for the War of the Rebellion at Rockville, IN. This unit was the 85th Indiana Regiment, organized at Terre Haute on 2 Sep 1862 for the Union cause for three years of service. Col. John Baird and Lt. Col. Alex B. Crane were Major Craig's superior officers. They proceeded to Covington, KY. pursuing the rebel army which fell back. The regiment went into camp at Danville, KY. until 26 Jan 1863; and in late February of 1863 they went to Louisville and then by boat to Nashville, and finally Franklin, TN. They were joined there by the 33rd Indiana, the 22nd Wisconsin, and the 19th Michigan under the command of Col. John Coburn. On March 5, 1863, at Thompson's station, Col. Coburn made an attack on the enemy, driving them back several miles, encountering General Forrest with 5 Brigades, strongly posted behind stone fences where a desperate fight ensued, lasting several hours. The Brigade, including the 85th Indiana volunteers were surrounded by overwhelming force and compelled to surrender. It was its first engagement, and the 85th fought gallantly, changing front three times under fire. The losses were heavy in killed and wounded. After surrender the brigade marched to Tullahoma. The men suffered terribly from hunger, exhaustion, and exposure to the rain and the cold. They were taken to Richmond by rail and placed in Libby Prison. About the first of April, (May 5, 1863) the prisoners were exchanged and returned to Indianapolis. During their captivity the 85th suffered exceedingly from ill-usage, several dying along the march and in the prison. In June, 1863, after exchange, the regiment went to Franklin, Tennessee, and engaged in skirmishing until General Bragg's army fell back April 20, 1864. The regiment left Lavergne and went to Look Out Valley with Colburn's Brigade. They joined the 20th Army Corps and immediately entered the Atlanta campaign, participating in the battles of Rececea, Cassville, Dallas, (Telytha? Church), Culp's Farm, and Peach Tree Creek. They were the first to receive the charging forces of the enemy's opening fire when not over 50' from the rebel front. This battle of July 20, 1864, was one of the fiercest and most terrible. The ground in front of the 85th was piled with dead and wounded confederates. The Regiment also participated in the battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. On November 15, 1864, the 85th started with Sherman's army on the historic march from Atlanta to the sea, and on December 12, 1864, came upon the enemy's lines at Savannah, Georgia. On Jan 1, 1865, the division to which the 85th was attached with the first to cross into South Caroline and on February 1, 1864, started its last campaign through the Carolinas. March 16, 1864 they engaged in a battle at Averysboro, North Carolina, and suffered heavily in killed and wounded. In this battle less than a month before the surrender at Appomattox, three brave boys of Co. A were killed. It was at the Battle of Bentonville that Goldboro marched in the campaign against Raleigh and after the surrender of Johnson, marched via Richmond to Washington where the 85th participated in the grand march down Pennsylvania Avenue. From May 15, 1864 until the muster out, the 85th lost in killed and wounded about 150 men, exclusive of those who died from disease. On December 8, 1862/63, Helen Houghton Craig was born to Juliet and Robert Emmett Craig. She was named for Juliet's sister and Robert's first wife, Helen M. Houghton Craig. Major Robert E. Craig died April 2, 1864, in Murfreesboro, TN. in a Civil War Hospital, three years after he and Juliet were married, having been in the service the entire time of their marriage. He died of injuries received at Libby Prison. 85th Indiana Vol. Co I. Pension certificate #38983 dated 10 June 1864. Pension application #53771 dated 10 June 1862.
