Biography

JWH: "He was an early settler in the Colony of New Jersey and lived until the close of the Revolutionary War." CJV: JWH gives him as son of Henry, John, John1 line. The first 3 male children he gives for Nehemiah are Col. Joab Houghton (son of Thomas, John of NJ) and two of his sons, Aaron & William. The other 5 children (Edward, Polly, Lizzie, Simeon & Charles) have been untraceable by me. There no other Nehemiah Houghtons from NJ.

BT, 1934, CWR: "The third child given [in J.W. Houghton] to Henry and Abigail was a Nehemiah, who married ---(?) and had a William, an Aaron and a Joab. The family of Nehemiah went to New Jersey."

BT, GRTB: "I have never been able to ascertain who the father of Nehemiah [Houghton] of Hopewell was. There is some evidence to indicate that he came from Connecticut..." "We may confidently strike from the Dr. Houghton's genealogy the name of Nehemiah of Hopewell and any children ascribed to him, as his name does not appear in the chronicles of Western New Jersey."^4,2,5

Problem

CJV: This Nehemiah Houghton is one of JWH's major errors. He is clearly not a NJ emigrant; there is no NJ data on him. Two of the 8 children given by JWH for this Nehemiah are the sons of Col. Joab Houghton of NJ (Thomas2, John1 of NJ), who he also lists as a son; 5 of the children are not further traceable.

Problem: parents; Not in Burr, 10/1925 NEGHR; number of children are similar to Joab's (Aaron, William definitely)

BT, 1/35: "Dr. J.W. Houghton, I believe is entirely incorrect in allotting a son named Nehemiah to Henry and Abigail, who is said by him to have moved to Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., N.J...There is no possible chance that I can conceive of that would make this connection possible."; BT, 1935: "I decline to accept this connection, as there was no official record of Henry having a son by the name of Nehemiah...In the meantime, we may confidently strike from Dr. Houghton's genealogy the name of Nehemiah of Hopewell, and any children ascribed to him, as his name does not appear in the chronicles of western Jersey."

BT, 12/34: "Dr. J. W. Research

Meriam Butler. Named after Meriam family of Lancaster. According to NGS, James Butler, Sr., Irishman, had a son, James Butler who was run over by a wagon and left a widow named Hannah Wilson Butler (the daug. of James Wilson) and four children. Merriam was the oldest of the 4 children and she had a guardian appointed to take care of her. She married Capt. Cyrus Houghton and after an Indian uprising, the family left Bolton and went to Putney VT. Meriam's grandfather's obituary is there and lists him as Irish. James Sigler believes he was related to the Earl of Ormond in Ireland.¹
