"Rev. Wm. F. Jenkins, a superannuated Minister of the Michigan Conference, of the M.E. Church, died at his residence, in Pewamo, on Sabbath morning, the 16th inst., at one o'clock, aged 73 years. He was converted when quite young and joined the M.E. Church, and quite early in his religious life gave evidence to his brethren that God had called him to the work of the ministry, and he was licensed to officiate as a local preacher, which office he magnified for a number of years and at the earnest solicitation of some of his brethren, he was finally induced to engage in the regular work of the itineracy; and while in the active work filled with great acceptability the following circuits in the order in which they here appear: St. Joseph, Otsego, Ganges, Middleville, Greenville, Saranac, Lowell, Palo, Dewitt, Easton, Pewamo.
The last two named were filled after he had been granted a superannuated relation by the Conference, but he had such a desire to work that he worked on under circumstances when most men would have said, it is impossible for me to work. For the last nine years he has been unable to preach, except an occasional sermon, and much of that time he has been a great sufferer, but has shown by his patient endurance what grace can do in the matter of helping poor suffering human nature to endure without complaint whatever of physical pain may fall to the lot of one who feels himself only a sojourner in this vale of sorrow. His death was peaceful and triumphant: being assured that his work was done and his reward was sure.
He leaves a wife*, and five children by a former wife** who preceded him to the world of light several years since; having lived with her who now mourns his loss for about seven years very happily. He leaves a large circle of friends and but few, if any, enemies. We laid his body to rest on the 18th inst., after a very solemn and impressive service at the church, led by his pastor, Rev. G.W. Moag, and participated in by several of his ministerial brethren from other charges. A large concourse of people were in attendance and manifested their interest in the services by remaining patiently and listening attentively, and often with tearful eyes, to every word said from the first to the final close; and all seemed to feel, as they looked on his face for the last time, "We are taking our leave of one whose presence and influence will be missed as much or more than any other one ever taken from our midst;"
and all seemed to say--
Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee,
Since God was thy ransom, thy guardian and guide;
He gave thee, He took thee, and He will restore thee,
Where death has no sting, since the Savior has died.

ResearchJudith Weeks Ancell, 1995: it is possible from the birth dates of the children that William Jenkins had another marriage first and had a wife die before marrying Lucy. One lead that I have which would make this premise possible is: 10,1000 VITAL RECORDS OF EASTERN NEW YORK 1774-1834: 'JENKINS, william m 3/9/31 Mary Ann Henry, oldest dau. of late Dre. Henry of Geneva, in Utica; Rev Elon Galusha (6/6/18) THE HUDSON BALANCE 1801-1808; THE NORTHERN WHIG 1809-1820.'
William F. Jenkins was married to Lucy Houghton. However, I have never found any record of their marriage nor of the parentage of either one. I have never found proof that the quote I in this post included was an earlier marriage for him. I was hoping that someone would read it and have more information that would either prove or disprove the marriage to be his. As you will notice this was a query not a proven fact.5

American Biographical History of Eminent and Self-Made Men, Michigan (Western Biographical Publishing Company, 1878 J. S. Morgan & Co., Printers and Binders, 2, 4, 6 & 8 Home Street, Cincinnati), Library of Judith (Weeks) Ancell, Biography of Moses B. Houghton. "Name: General Moses B. Houghton Farmer, Osceola County, Michigan, was born at Orangeville, Wyoming County, New York, on the 8th of November, 1834. His father was a farmer and dairyman, carrying on a large business. He remained at home until he was twenty years of age, assisting his father in the farm work, and attending school. He then went to Middlebury Academy, where he finished his school training. In 1854 his father removed to Ionia County, Michigan, where he purchased two farms, one of which he gave to Moses, who was engaged in agricultural pursuits until the breaking out of the civil war. He had been Captain of the Boston Light Guards at Saranac, Ionia County; and, after Fort Sumter was fired upon, he raised the company to a maximum of one hundred men, and tendered his services to the Government. The company was attached to the 3d Michigan Regiment, which rendezvoused at Grand Rapids, and was sworn into the United States Government service for three months. The regiment was mustered out at the end of that time, and immediately sworn in for three years, leaving Grand Rapids in June, 1861. It joined the Army of the Potomac, and was the second regiment to march through Baltimore, after the 2d Massachusetts had been fired into. Captain Houghton took an active part in the battles of Blackburn's Ford, Bull Run, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, the seven days' fight before Richmond, where his regiment lost one hundred and forty-three men and nine officers; Chantilly, Fredericksburg, where he led his regiment as Major; Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where he commanded the skirmishers in front of the Third Corps. During the Battle of the Wilderness, he commanded the 3d and the 5th Michigan regiments, to which he had been assigned after the field-officers had been disabled. He held this position until June 10. 1864, when he was ordered home, his term having expired. He returned with his regiment to Michigan; and, in August, 1864, reorganized it and was commissioned Colonel. He participated in the engagements with General Hood's army at Decatur, Alabama; and in those with General Forrest in and about Murfreesboro, up to the time of General Hood's overthrow at Nashville. He was promoted through the several grades from Captain to Colonel; and, in 1865, was commissioned Brigadier-General, by brevet, for gallant and meritorious services. In a letter of recommendation sent to head-quarters for his promotion to the rank of Brigadier-General, Major-General D. S. Stanley says: "There are, perhaps, few officers in America who can show such a brilliant record as Colonel Houghton. His battles and skirmishes can be counted almost by scores; and, in all these, he has acquitted himself most gallantly. bearing a high fame among his comrades in arms. I earnestly recommend his promotion." Upon being mustered out of service, General Houghton returned to his home in Ionia County, Michigan; and, in 1871, removed to Osceola County, having entered a soldier's homestead. In the spring of 1872, he was elected Supervisor; and, in the fall of the same year, was made Sheriff of Osceola County, and re-elected in 1874. In January, 1877, he was appointed Assistant Sergeant-at-arms for the Michigan Senate. In politics, he has always voted with the Republican party. He is an attendant at the Episcopal Church. General Houghton married, on his twentieth birthday, Miss Mary Keith, of Wyoming, New York. They have had three children,--two sons and one daughter.".

TUSTIN - A newer white gravestone stands just in front of a weathered almost unreadable gravestone set horizontal in the ground.

An American Flag and GAR marker frame the monument and words etched in stone: "Gabriel Cole, Medal of Honor."

Cole, a member of the 5th Michigan Cavalry who rode for a time with George Armstrong Custer, was one of a surprising hundreds of Civil War veterans who made their way to Osceola County after the war.

Wednesday is the 143rd Anniversary of the battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the war that would send some 89,000 Michigan men into battle and leave an estimated 14,700 state men dead. Many more returned maimed. And still more arrived looking for land, thanks to the Homestead Act of 1863.

"One of the major provisions for the Homestead Act provided a special treatment for veterans of the Civil War," said Mark Harvey, reference archivist at the State Archives of Michigan in Lansing. "After the war, a soldier would be allowed to deduct the number of years that he served in the Union Army from the five-year residency requirement. Any person who had borne arms against the Union was not eligible. So the Homestead Act was passed, in small part, as a recruiting inducement for the Army."

Betsy Randall knows that land in Osceola County became a destination for many Civil War vets.

Randall, a member of the Osceola County Genealogical Society, said only about 15 men actually left the county for the war - most fighting with Grand Rapids units. But after the war she and others researching Civil War veterans in the county have found many more seeking homesteads in the county.

"We have several hundred," Randall said. The group has been researching Civil War veterans in the county for the past four years and intends to publish a book that will include their histories.

In Tustin, Peggy Rutherford of the Pine River Area Historical Society, has been working with the Genealogical Society compiling a list of veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic who fought for the Union and settled in Sherman and Burdell townships.

Among those veterans is a soldier who helped capture the Confederacy's President Jefferson Davis, a man who went to war as a captain and returned a general, and Cole, who rode with Custer for a portion of the war.

Rutherford said she has uncovered 112 veterans from just the two townships by researching the Tustin Times newspaper, cemetery records, land records and family histories among other documents.

"There were so many more than we thought there would be," she said.

Rutherford said Cole, born in New York state, joined the Michigan 5th Cavalry on Aug. 19, 1862 in Allegan. He was wounded in Hanover, Pa., during the early part of the Battle of Gettysburg and was wounded again when he won the Medal of Honor during a battle at Winchester, Va.

Soldiers who could capture the enemy's flag won the medal automatically.

"The second time he was wounded was when he played hero and rode his horse around the Confederate Army and captured their signal flag near Winchester, Va., at Opequon Creek on Sept. 19, 1864," she said. "That resulted in his winning the Medal of Honor at 33 years of age."

Rutherford said she also found Cole later rode with Custer in fierce charges and in one charge had his horse shot out from him. After the war he returned to Burnips near Allegan, then took a homestead in Sherman Township and raised a family. He served as Sergeant at Arms. He died of pneumonia in January 1907.

Another notable veteran of the area was George F. Noggle who helped capture Davis at the end of the war.

He was born in Ohio and joined the 4th Michigan Cavalry on July 26, 1862, and fought through the war. On May 7, 1865, he was with 419 men and 20 officers assigned to try and find Davis. Intelligence information said the wily southern leader's group was trying to cross the Ocmulgee River in Georgia.

On May 9th, the group learned a convoy of 12 wagons and two ambulances left Abbeville, Ga. Noggle was among 128 troops and eight officers that pursued.

The unit caught up with the wagons at 2 a.m. in the morning and ambushed the encampment at about 3 a.m. Davis was captured without the Confederates firing a shot.

The $100,000 reward was split up among the men with the officers taking their share and privates such as Noggle netting $293, Rutherford said.

He returned from the war to Michigan, married and moved to a Tustin homestead. An article about his 5Oth Anniversary was published in the Tustin Times along with much of the information about his Civil War exploits, Rutherford said. He, too, is buried in Sherman Township Cemetery.

A third notable veteran who arrived in Tustin following the war was Moses Barrett Houghton. Rutherford's research shows he was born in New York in 1834, married there and then moved to Ionia County in 1854. When the war broke out he organized a group of 100 men and as captain of the unit offered their services to the government. The group was attached to the 3rd Michigan Regiment.

He took part in one of the first skirmishes of the war at Blackburn's Ford outside Washington D.C. and then Bull Run, Yorktown, Fair Oaks, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and many other battles. Along the way he was promoted to colonel.

Rutherford said Houghton was promoted to brigadier general for his "gallant and meritorious service" in 1865. Her research found a statement lauding Houghton from Major Gen. D.S. Stanley who said: "There are few officers in America who can show such a brilliant record as Col. Houghton. His battles and skirmishes can almost be counted by the scores and, in all these, he has acquitted himself most gallantly."

Houghton was mustered out the service in Victoria, Texas, returned to Ionia and in 1871 took a homestead in Osceola County. He was elected township supervisor and in the fall of the same year was elected sheriff. He served for two terms.

Houghton also served as Sergeant at Arms for the Michigan Senate in Lansing in 1877. He died June 1, 1903 in Tustin and is buried in Burdell Township Cemetery.

Rutherford said many of the Tustin area Civil War veterans were part of Col. Steward Post #285 - a veteran's organization. They also had a GAR group.

Randall said members of her group have put a lot of time and effort into the research of county veterans and after current research of records from the veteran's home in Grand Rapids is complete, the effort to publish the book will begin.

Randall said research around the county has found GAR groups in Marion, Evart and LeRoy - and two in Reed City.

"They were big, the ones in Reed City had over 100 members."

And 60 years after the war, there were still some veterans around to tell their stories.

"Some of these men lived into the 1920s," she said. "We have a couple who lived into the 1930s."
