In the 1930s he played with the St. Paul Band. The band visited San Francisco and met Marian on a blind date. He moved to San Francisco and married Marian in 1933. He was 22 and she was 18. He played soccer with the Italian Soccer team. He first worked in a slaughterhouse and then as a longshoreman for a number of years (he lost two fingers on job.)
