Obituary: on 4 July 2024: Ben Grech
01/18/1935 - 06/30/2024
Benjamin Savier "Benny" Grech, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on June 30, 2024. Born in Mosta, Malta on January 18, 1935 to Emmanuel and Rose Grech, Ben immigrated to the United States in 1953, settling in San Francisco after stops in Australia and Detroit, Michigan.
Ben's career as a longshoreman for the ILWU, first on the docks of San Francisco and then Oakland, spanned some 40 years. He worked hard to support his family and was a mentor to many who worked with him.
An avid outdoorsman, Ben was drawn to wildlife. He had a passion for fishing and could identify any bird you pointed to. When his chronic back pain ended his fishing career, he enjoyed growing lemons, tomatoes, and canning olives. He was a generous man who would insist that you leave his home with something he caught, grew, or made.
Ben's sisters introduced him to Elsie Ivancich, who would become his wife of 67 years. They married in 1957 and in 1964 moved to San Bruno, where they raised their family. He is survived by wife Elsie, children David Grech, Susan Hanshaw (Dean Guadagni), Steven Grech, grandchildren Nina Siglin and Christina Gibson, and siblings Theresa Muscat and Reno Grech.
A public vigil service is scheduled for July 10th at the Chapel of the Highlands in Millbrae at 7:00 PM. Funeral mass will be held on July 11th at 10:30 AM at St. Robert's Church in San Bruno prior to the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Dementia Society.
