I am glad we moved here. I live next to my daughter. My oldest son lives with me. He is retired and used to work for S. F. City. We have 9 grandchildren live all around here and 14 great grandchildren. Last week Barbara and Tom came to visit me and we had a nice afternoon. We are 2nd cousins. I told her that I bought the liquor store from her parents in 1956 and I came from Malta with her grandparents in 1949. My daughter met them and told her that her grandparents are the godparents of my daughter. Last year I sold the house we still had at 50 Girard St. in 4 hours. Louis Caruana Realty sold it. He just lost his wife. I will be 93 years old in March 18th. I am still in very good shape. Still walk 1 hour every day. I just renewed my driving license for 5 years. Hope you all feel well. Her married name was Mifsud.1 She emigrated from Malta Emanuel and Mary left Malta, on board the Atlantic, on 14 Jan. 1953, and arrived at New York on Jan. 24th. No children accompanied them on 15 June 1953.1 She was naturalized in 1964.
Obituary: : Mary Assunta Mifsud was born on January 16, 1925 in her parents’ home of Carmelo and Guiseppa Tonna, in Mosta, Malta. She passed away on December 6, 2016 in Vacaville, CA. Predeceased by her loving son, Charlie; the love of her life, her husband Emanuel; brother George and sister Rose. She is survived by her beloved brother Joe Tonna of Concord, CA. Having loving and supportive parents, Mary was raised in the Catholic faith. She learned at an early age to become a seamstress; making clothes for her neighbors helped her support her family. Mary’s education was violently interrupted by World War II. Malta, home to the British Fleet, sustained the heaviest bombing, as it was the target of fierce German and Italian bombers. Mary and her family endured near starvation and destruction during that period as schools, churches and numerous infrastructures were targeted. Mary spoke of seemingly endless terrifying hours in bomb shelters with family during her teenage years. In 1951, Mary met Emanuel and were soon married at St. Mary’s Cathedral (The Mosta Dome), and lived with her parents for the first year where their first son, Charlie was born. With the sponsorship of her brother Joe who was living in San Francisco, Mary’s dream of living in America came true. In 1953, Mary, Emanuel and Charlie immigrated to the United States. Mary was the most loving and nurturing mom to her four children Charlie, John, Ron and Barbara. She supported, nurtured and guided them throughout their lives. Having taught herself English, Mary became a naturalized citizen in 1964, a very proud moment for her and her family.
Mary worked at various warehouse jobs, including See’s Candies, but was most proud of her 20+ years at Hills Brothers Coffee on the Embarcadero. During retirement, Mary made several trips back to Malta with her family and always hoped to return once again to visit with her extended family and friends.
Mary especially loved family gatherings especially around the holidays, preparing feasts and visiting with her loved ones. Mary truly loved her grandchildren, Suzanne, Johnny [Michelle], Sawyer and Brittany who all loved listening to her stories of growing up in Malta. Mary also adored her two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Hudson. We will always remember Mary’s zest for life, sense of humor, infectious smile, love of music, hearty laughs and her kind and gentle soul.

Obituary: : Joan Pace Age 78, of Redwood Shores, California, most beloved wife for 54 years of the late Louis Pace, Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday August 7, 2014. An extraordinarily sunny and bright inspiration she is the mother of Alfred, Vincent, Louis and Elayne and the treasured grandmother of nine adored grandchildren.
Joan was an insistent, vivacious host of Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations for over 50 years. Mom served massive ravioli, fabulous turkey and splendid cracked crab feasts and was an pastizzi-maker extraordinaire.
Born Giovanna (Joan) Quilliam in Conspicua, Malta, to George and Carmela (Abela) Quilliam, Joan ('Jane', to her many dear friends!) celebrated her youth in Malta. With loving husband Louis, in 1955 she immigrated to Canada and subsequently to San Francisco. Jane was also a dedicated full-time foster parent, providing food, shelter and love to children in need. For 40 years, she worked alongside Dad as the Office Manager for Pace Machine Products. A fantastic lady.
Joan was a member of the Maltese Club and of the Senior Citizens of San Carlos and Belmont. She enjoyed trips to Malta, shopping with Elayne and family dinners. She was an elegant, kind woman with an aura of grace and sense of 'live and let live'.
We will miss her desperately. May she rest in the loving arms of our Lord and the welcome embrace of our dad.
