Those who went to SF seem to be from the harborside cities of Valletta, Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa, or from the northwest villages of Malta, namely Mosta, Naxxar, Mellieh, St Pauls Bay etc; vast majority from Mosta, Malta; Lots of chain migration; many switched declared destinations; most passport issue dates correlate with dates of arrival noted in US Censuses.

Research: Mark Caruana on return rate to Malta after 1930: My feeling is that, for those who were not well-settled in SF, or were wage earners, day labourers etc, the Great Depression could have been a factor in returning to Malta. Then WW2 broke out and they could not travel during the war years. If they did apply to return after 1945, I do not have such passport details, as postwar migration is a totally different kettle of fish and my interest is primarily in early migration..

It is a fact that the 1930s was a decade where more returned to Malta than those who emigrated, especially 1930 and 1931 when the Depression hit hardest

Migration picked up again in the late 1930s. I am currently doing Malta passport entries for 1938-39 and noticed that migration to Canada and the USA hardly exists (probably nil), while migration to Australia picked up. Another factor could be that the USA migration authorities put stricter requirements such a literacy test, having an existing family member already in the US. Australia needed farmers and was not as strict. I confirmed this as many could hardly sign their name and were allowed to Australia. The USA, on the other test, the prospective applicant had to sit for a written test and I think this started in the early twenties when the USA put quotas which badly affected the Maltese.
