ResearchNov 18, 1830Bolton, Worcester Co., MA, USA, Hayward S. Houghton [document now in possession of CJV]: I found an old, crumbling, document written by a Jacob Houghton who states that he is "of Bolton" and that he was born in 1757. It was evidentally written in an attempt to establish his Revolutionary War service - possibly for pension purposes? It details his service in 1780-1783 as a seaman on various privateer cruises, showing dates, names of ships and their Captains, and prizes that they captured, It concludes with details of the capture of his own ship by the British and his subsequent captivity in New York, Barbados and Antigua. It bears an endorsement dated Nov. 18, 1830 by Samuel S. Houghton [a 1st cousin] attesting to Jacob's character and reputation for veracity. It also bears another unsigned endorsement from a former crewmate.23

Description:      [48] p. : ill; 19 cm.
Notes:      The calculations on the calendar pages are identical with those in Houghton's genuine almanac for 1807 (Shaw & Shoemaker 10593), by Asa Houghton (Keene, N.H.), except that the calculations for the moon's phases vary slightly, and those in the notes column of Houghton's calendar pages are not found in Thomas's. In turn, all the calculations in Houghton's 1807 almanac, except those for the rising and setting of the sun and the length of the day, duplicate those in The Newhampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont almanack for 1807 (Shaw & Shoemaker 50700), with astronomical calculations by Gilbert Graves (Walpole, N.H.) A few of the calculations in Graves are not paralleled in Houghton.
Copies of letters by Gilbert Graves, accompanied by a photostat of letters by Isaiah Thomas to or concerning Graves, are in the American Antiquarian Society's manuscript collection. These indicate that Graves calculated Isaiah Thomas Junior's town & country almanack for 1813 to 1815, the 1813 issue in collaboration with Houghton. The calculations in Thomas' almanacs for several years previous are identical in part or almost entirely with those in Houghton's. All these circumstances suggest a collaboration between Graves and Houghton, on both the Houghton and Thomas series of almanacs, from at least 1807 to perhaps 1813. The title pages of Houghton for 1807-1813 have the phrase "Astronomical part by Asa Houghton." All others before and after these dates have the phrase "By Asa Houghton." The wording of the authorship phrase is not as suggestive as the alteration in it.

BiographyWhitcomb: "An Almanac Maker...One of these was Asa, son of Simon and Martha (Stearns) Houghton, who was born in Bolton on 3 February 1775 in one of the Houghton houses on Bare Hill Road...Asa'ss first almanac, called The Gentleman's and Ladies' Dieary and Almanac was published in 1796 when he was twenty-one years old...It is possible to understand Asa's training, however, by reading a "Recommendation to the Public" inserted in the 1802 edition of the almanac..."That I have frequently perused the annual productions of other astronomers and those in particular made by Mr. Houghton...That Mr. Houghton's calculations in general have always appeared to me to be as accurate as any other ever published on this continent." This is signed by Samuel Stearns, L.L.D. (his uncle)...After a few years Asa Houghton removed to Putney, Vermont where he still worked on his almanac..."
Nourse: "Asa Houghton began publishing astronomical calculations about 1796, and for twenty years at least "The Gentlemen's and Ladies' Diary and Almanac" had an extended patronage. Houghton, in his annual address to the public, sometimes indulged in somewhat stilted rhetoric about the "awfully sublime ideas" inspired in the almanac-maker by "the study of that Divine and Heavenly Science, Astronomy;" but his mathematical deductions seem to have been sufficiently accurate, and his pages of miscellany of fully average interest and usefulness."

Dr. Stearns while a resident of Dummerston, lived in the east part of the town. In 1804, he occupied what has since been called the "Birchard place." He owned one-half acre of land and one-third of the store. Jabez Butler and Asa Houghton owned the remaining two-thirds. He sold the land and his share in the store, the same year. to Butler and Houghton. The store was 40 by 60 ft. and was the first one burned on that site, when occupied by Roger Birchard. Asa Houghton, born in Bolton, Mass., Feb. 3, 1775, was a nephew of Dr. Stearns. He was in trade in this town but died in Putney, Sept. 10, 1829, where he has a daughter now living. He was an uncle of Simon W. Houghton, Esq. of Putney.

Dr. Stearns had a sister, Martha Stearns, who married Simon Houghton grandfather of Simon W. Houghton, Esq. now living in Putney. She was born in Lancaster, Mass., May 30, 1750, died Apr. 3, 1823. Her husband was born Oct. 15. 1737. Both died in Bolton, Mass., a town taken from Lancaster.

A lady now living in Dummerston, nearly 88 years old remembers the Doctor quite well. He was called to see her mother, who was sick of a fever, and she describes him as a nice looking man. His hair was white and combed straight back from his forehead and worn in a queue. During his visit to the sick woman, the doctor looked in the mirror two or three times to see whether his hair was all right.19,20

BiographyChautauqua Co. NY Hx: "attended the district school; earned money to buy a Latin grammar, and studied while riding to mill with the grain in panniers, on horseback. After he left home, he studied Latin and Greek under a private tutor. At 21, he went to Vermont, taught school, was a clerk in a store, and removed with his employer to Troy, N. Y. He there studied law for three years with David Jones, and was admitted to practice in all the courts of the state. At 25, he formed a partnership with Samuel Starr, and afterwards with John A. Collier, who studied with him. He had the honorary degree of A. M. conferred upon him. He was married, Jan. 28, 1806, at Wallingford, Vt., to Lydia Douglass, daugher of Capt. Daniel Douglass, of the army of the Revolution. She was born in Conn., Dec. 10, 1870. In June, 1811, he visited this country, engaged a man to build a house, and in September removed his family to Mayville. His house was not begun, nor could he find one short of Irving, on the north side of Cattaraugus creek, whither he removed; the journey having been made with an ox-team in five days, guided by blazed trees. He there practiced his profession, traded with the Indians, Daniel Douglass, his brother-in-law, being a clerk in his store. In 1812, he removed to Fredonia, and built the house in which his still reside. He was present at the first court, [common pleas,] held in the county, in June, 1811, with only three other attorneys, Anselm Potter, Casper Rouse, and Dennis Brackett. Mr. Rouse dying a year or two after, and Mr. Brackett being killed at Buffalo, at the burning of the city on December 13, 1813. Mr. Houghton was the only supreme court attorney in the county. In March, 1813, he was appointed, by Gov. Tompkins, a judge of the court of common pleas. He was also for some time postmaster at Frdonia. He was for two terms supreme court commissioner, by appointment of Gov. Marcy; and held the office of justice of the peace for four years. He died suddenly of apoplexy, July 30, 1861, aged 85 years and 5 months.

He was on a federalist committee for Pombiet, and on a committee of correspondence. Thomas A. Osborne was his law partner for several years at Fredonia and Mayville.

History of Chautauqua County
By ANDREW W. YOUNG,
Jacob Houghton, an early lawyer from Rensselaer county, was appointed postmaster of Pomfret, August 19, 1813. Having removed to Mayville, he was succeeded, in 1816, by Mosely W. Abell, from Buffalo in 1814. The office was kept in the inn of Mosely W. and Thomas G. Abell, on the present site of the Taylor House. This became one of the principal stage-houses between Buffalo and Erie. The balance due the general post-office for the first quarter of this year, [April 1, 1817,] was $68.37, at that time the largest amount returned from any office in the county.

Early CT settlers in Chautauqua Co., NY: Admitted to bar as a lawyer at Troy NY in June 1811. Came to Chautauqua Co. NY to a house he built in Mayville. He made the journey with an ox-team being guided by blazed trees through the forest. In Mayville he practiced his profession and traded with the Indians with David Douglass, his brother in law, working as a clerk in his store. In 1812 he returned to Fredonia.32,33,34
