Biography

Literary folk figure. Dexter Pratt moved to 54 Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1827 to work as a blacksmith. His neighbor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow often walked by this home on his way to work at Harvard. In 1839, Longfellow was inspired to write his now well-known poem "The Village Blacksmith," apparently inspired by Pratt and the "spreading chestnut tree" under which his shop stood, although the poem does not stay true to biographical details. Today, Pratt's house is denoted by a historical sign, and a large stone tablet marks where the famous chestnut tree of the poem once stood.

Dr.Houghton, Dentist, Dies At Age Of 64 Stricken on Way to Thompsonville Office; Practiced 40 Years
THOMPSONVILLE, Jan. 7 - (Special)—Dr. Earl W. Houghton, 64, of Frew Terrace, dean of dentists in the town ot Enfield, died suddenly Monday morning. Dr. Houghton stopped at a Prospect Street store for his morning paper while on his way to his office. He was stricken there. He was horn in Hazardville. February 8, 1887, son of the late Dr. Simon w. and (Little) Houghton. His father was "the country doctor” for many years. Dr. Houghton was graduated from Dental School of Tempe University and had been a practicing dentist here for more than 40 years. His offices for many years were in the First National Bank Building on Main Street. He was a member of Doric Lodge, AF and AM, and of Hazardville Methodist Church. He formerly was affiliated with Friendship Lodge, IOOF, here. He leaves his wife. Mrs. Lois (Deland) Houghton. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. at the Leetc Funeral Home at 125 Pearl Street. Rev. James M. Regester, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Enfield Street Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 3 p. m. and from 7 to 9 p. m.
