Born July 25, 1841, near Kingston, Canada, of American parents, hence an American citizen by birth. Mother's family came from Durham, Conn., father's from Massachusetts. They were among the earliest settlers of Oswego County, N.Y. Their town was first called Phillipsville, which is now a part of Fulton. Prepared for college at Falley Seminary, New York, and after teaching a year, entered Wesleyan University.

Aug. 5, 1865, Sailed for England, traveled a short time, then went to Germany and entered Berlin University, to study Mathematics, Astronomy, and Physics.
1865-68, Studied in Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg.
1868, Ph.D. Heidelberg University. Vacations were spent in traveling through Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.
1868-9, Teacher of Mathematics in Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, Mass.
1870, Professor of Natural Sciences, Genesee College, Lima, N.Y.
1871, Teacher and Acting Principal, Providence Conference Seminary, East Greenwich, R.I.
1871-83, Teacher of Mathematics in Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, Mass. Elected President of Albert College, Canada, but decided not to accept.
1884, Elected to a position in South Dakota Agricultural College when first opened.
1890, Elected Professor of Mathematics in same.

1874, Published a Geometry, and "Elements of Modern Geometry," which was used in many leading colleges. It was the first departure from the old forms of geometry.

Alice Bigelow Tully (September 14, 1902 – December 10, 1993)[1] was an American singer, music promoter and philanthropist from New York.

Alice Tully was born in Corning, Steuben County, New York, the daughter of State Senator William J. Tully (1870–1930) and Clara Mabel (Houghton) Tully (1870–1958). She spent her high school years at the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut. Tully began her career as a mezzo-soprano, then became a soprano. She studied in Paris and made her debut in 1927 with the Pasdeloup Orchestra. In 1933, she appeared in Cavalleria rusticana in New York City.

Upon her mother's death in 1958, Tully inherited the estate of her grandfather, Amory Houghton Jr. (1837-1909), (son of Amory Houghton, Sr., founder of the Corning Glass Works), who on June 19, 1860, married Tully's grandmother Ellen Ann Bigelow (daughter of Alanson Bigelow and his Bigelow first cousin, once removed, Anne Rebecca Bangs.) During the rest of her life, Tully donated much of her income to arts institutions, often anonymously. Her cousin, Arthur Amory Houghton, Jr., one of the founders of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, suggested that she give money for a chamber music hall, and in 1963 John D. Rockefeller III convinced her to allow it to be named Alice Tully Hall.

Tully chaired the board of directors of the New York Chamber Music Society, and served on the boards of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School.

In 1970, Tully was awarded the Handel Medallion for her contributions to the cultural life of New York City. Her most famous commission was for Olivier Messiaen who composed Des canyons aux étoiles... which had its first performance in the Alice Tully Hall in 1974. In 1985, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

William Schuman, Gian Carlo Menotti and Riccardo Malipiero dedicated works to her. She died in New York in 1993, aged 91.

Alice BIGELOW TULLY, a philanthropist who was an important figure in New York City's musical life for almost half a century, was a regal woman with a friendly smile, wry sense of humor and a comprehensive knowledge of musical literature and the world of performers. Miss Tully, for whom Lincoln Center's 1096-seat chamber-music hall is named, was as respected for her knowledge of music and its practitioners as for her generosity. As a
singer who had a modest operatic and recital career in the 1930s, she was keenly aware of the problems performers face. Throughout her life, she was a friend and supporter of singers, pianists and composers. Upon the death of her mother, Clara Houghton Tully, in 1958, Alice inherited a substantial
estate. Her family's wealth came from her grandfather, who was Amory Houghton, the founder of Corning Glass Works. After her inheritance, she began her career as a philanthropist, donating many millions of dollars to the arts. It was at about this time (1958) that her cousin, Arthur Houghton Jr. , one of the founders of Lincoln Center, approached her with the idea of contributing toward the concert hall now bearing her name. For several years, Miss Tully preferred to make her contributions anonymously, and when she agreed to underwrite a chamber music hall in the Juilliard Building at Lincoln Center, she stipulated that her gift be anonymous. The hall opened on Miss Tully's 67th birthday, Sept. 11, 1969. Eventually, John D. Rockefeller III, Lincoln Center's first chairman, persuaded her to allow the hall to be named in her honor. Miss Tully always refused to tell how much of the hall's cost she contributed, but she did not dispute reports that said she paid most of the $4.5 million. She did say that one reason she was hesitant to accept the hall's dedication at first was that Philharmonic Hall and the New York State Theater had been acoustical disasters. "I did not want my name associated with a hall that would have bad acoustics," she said in 1987. She changed her mind when Lincoln Center engaged Heinrich Keilholz, who had revamped Severance Hall in Cleveland in 1958, as acoustician. Alice Bigelow Tully died the 10 December 1993 at her home in Manhattan, NY, she had not been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 1991. Miss Tully had never married.

Prior to that time they were living on the old “Smith” farm, according to 1841 England census on microfilm. They landed in New Orleans on the 25th day of April 1842 and took passage on a steam boat and landed at the city of Nauvoo, IL on May 15, 1842. From Nauvoo, they went to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa where they lived until the time of their death.3,2,5

BiographyLori Houghton, 2008: Alice Houghton, the wife of William Greenwood, and a daughter of William Houghton wrote a brief history on March 27, 1880 to her grandchildren. She included that “On the 17th of March, 1842, my father (William Houghton) received the Gospel in England, hence we came to this land (America) with a company of Latter Day Saints and landed in New Orleans on the 25ht of April, 1842, in the sailing vessel, ship “Hanover”.2
