Carmelo Deguara was born on 28 July 1888 in Qormi, Malta; age 33 in 1920 census; age 45, CA, in 1930 census; age 51 in 1940 census.1 He was issued a Maltese Passport to travel to Malta on board the Olympic; to arrange his marriage on 19 March 1921. Declared destination was New York, NY, USA. He married Antonia (Nina) Abela, daughter of Philip Abela and Bernarda Farrugia, in 1921 at Malta; age 23 and 22 in 1930 census.1 Carmelo Deguara died on 31 January 1964 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA, USA, at age 75.1 He was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, CA, USA. Biography Nina Vella: According to his daughter Nina, his was one of the first four Maltese families in San Francisco (Sant family preceded him and were friends). He drove street cars for Market Street Railway until 1922. He ran a hog ranch in Colma (now South San Francisco, on Highway one) from 1922 to 1941, then retired. Listed in 1925 San Francisco City directory, living at 1737 LaSalle Ave (actually his mail address). In 1927, family were living at 1115 Mendell in San Francisco.
Mary Vella Rummelhart: My grandfather, Charles Deguara initially came to the US on July 19, 1910. He arrived on the Patris out of Greece. He was listed as Carmelo Deguara age 27, but he actually was 21. Born 1889. He resided in Qormi, Malta (they show C. Cunni, Malta). He did arrive at Ellis Island. There were a couple of other Maltese guys on the same ship .He was a wagoner in WWI. Lived in Monterey for awhile, either before the war or after and had a hog ranch with someone. I believe he lived there before the war and sold it when he went into the service. In 1921 in made a trip to Malta to get a wife! From what my Mom says, he knew my grandmother's family as they were from the same village. He went to her parents and said he wanted to make Antonia (Nina) his wife and take her to the US. I guess she said OK ; not sure if she had a choice. So they sailed from France on the Providence to Ellis Island, arriving on July 17 1921. Settled in SF and he started another hog ranch on Skyline near Westlake. They bought their first home on Mendell in 1927 (new) and moved there so that my mother could go to school as there were no schools near the hog ranch. I believe they lived on La Salle in the Bayview when they arrived in SF. My grandparents good friends were Joe and Dominica Vassello. Joe had purchased a house a few doors down from my grandparents on Mendell. Then he built a bigger house across the street on the corner. When my Dad came to this country he stayed with Uncle Bertu Vassello I believe.Through the Vassellos', he met my Mom. I guess he noticed her right away. Then he built a bigger house across the street on the corner. When my Dad came to this country he stayed with Uncle Bertu Vassello I believe. Through the Vassellos', he met my Mom.I guess he noticed her right away. My grandfather had a room he had built in his basement with a bathroom. The room had a stove, sink, bed, table, chair and cub boards. I know that he used the room to house a lot of the immigrants that came from Malta. Whether they were friends or family, I don't know. But I think he helped bring over my Grandmother's Brother Manuel and also her sister and husband, Manuel and George Ebejer and their five children.
He did well financially and owned some beautiful cars. He owned 4 homes between 1920 and 1940. He believed the United States was the greatest country in the world. He would talk about that all the time. He would get really mad at anyone who talked badly about this country, especially Maltese people. He would tell them to go back to Malta!!!
