Obituary: on 7 September 2018: Francis Xavier Buhagiar July 4, 1925 - August 30, 2018
"REJOICE AND BE GLAD" is what Dad would say!! Our loving and faithful father entered the Gates of Heaven peacefully on Thursday, August 30th at 3pm at his home in Rohnert Park, CA at the age of 93 years old. His faith in GOD and FAMILY were the two most important things in his life.
Francis was born in Gozo, Malta in the village of Xaghra. He was one of 11 children and very proud of his Maltese Heritage. He served in the British Royal Navy from 1943-1947. He came to New York City to live with his sister and worked there until 1950. Then he moved to San Francisco where he met and married our beautiful mother, Evelyn Sultana. They had 5 children and raised their family in Visitation Valley. The Church of the Visitacion became the center of our lives.
Dad enjoyed being part of the Maltese Club in SF. He loved to cook for everyone, not just family. He always volunteered to cook, especially for The Over Fifty-Five Club, and his favorite SF soup kitchen. Dad was active in the Boy Scouts with his sons. He loved to hunt, make wine, fish, garden, dance and travel with Mom.
When we think of our father we will always remember his devotion to God and how humble and kind he was. Our daily prayers, Rosary and Mass attendance became the foundation for our love of God and Faith he instilled in all of us.
He is preceded in death by his parents Pasquale and Rose Buhagiar, his siblings, Angelo, Theresa, Joseph, Manuel, Carmen, Concetta, Maria, Lewis, and Eucharistic, his daughter, Rosemary Gudelj and his wife, Evelyn Buhagiar. He is survived by his sister Rakela Vella, sisters-in-law Rose Buhagiar and Bernarda Buhagiar, brother-in-law and spouse George and Joan Pieczonka, his daughter and spouse Ann and Flemming Hansen, 3 sons and spouses John and Sue, Joey and Madeline, Michael and Joanne, son-in-law and spouse Steve and Suzanne Gudelj, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. We would like to thank his loving caretakers at Brookdale Senior Living in Rohnert Park, Hospice by Bay and Father Thuan for their continued support.
