Obituary

Michael J. Houghton, 69, of Nashua NH, passed away Oct. 24, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. Michael was born in Germany on Aug. 29, 1943. He was the husband of Patricia (Vlaun) Houghton of Nashua. Michael had been a longtime Nashua resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Prior to his retirement, Michael had been employed by Bellavance Beverage as a delivery driver. He loved doing puzzles, especially crosswords. Michael was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Patriots and the Red Sox.Besides his wife, Michael is survived by his sons Michael Houghton and Andrew Houghton.

Deceased Name: Mabel Antoinette (Westover) Houghton
Mabel Antoinette (Westover) Houghton passed to her final resting place on March 15, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was blessed to have many wonderful caregivers in her life, including Erlene Laura and her great-granddaughter, Katie Tanner. Mabel was born in Richford on leap year Feb. 29, 1916. She lived her early years in Richford, Georgia, and North Troy.

Her mother passed at an early age and Mabel lived with her grandparents, Ed and Lillian Laflamme. She married William Santaw and together they had three adoring daughters: Eleanor, Agnes, and Lorraine. Together they lived in many places, including North Troy, Miles Pond, Concert, and St. Johnsbury.

Mabel remarried later in life to Ralph Houghton. Both husbands predeceased her. Mabel worked her entire life to support herself and her children. She worked in the local glove factory for 35 years and managed to buy her own home. This was no small feat for a woman of such meager beginnings. She knew the value of hard work and never feared it. She instilled in her children the meaning of hard work and a good heart. Mabel never turned anyone away from her table.

Mabel was a generous, loving woman who loved gardening, family and children. Mabel loved a child's smile and was warmed by the love of her family. Her daughters were devoted and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved her with all their hearts. The world truly was a greater place because she was in it.

Mabel was predeceased by many of her family, including parents, grandparents, two brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter, Sandra (Fox) Carpenter. She will be missed by her daughter, Agnes (Fox) Anderson and husband, Bacil, Norma (Fox) Racine, Nancy (Fox) Newton and family, Sandra's family, Susan (Fox) Tanner and family, and Monica (Fox) Burnor and family. She is survived by not only the above, but daughters, Eleanor and Lorraine of Waterford; and brother, Harland Westover and wife, Teresa, and Doris (Westover) Bowen and Theresa (Westover) Bruce. She leaves eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19, at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Visiting hours start at 9 a.m. with services at 11.

Mabel's family would like to extend a special thanks to grandson, Jeff Racine, and great-granddaughter, Hollie Tanner, for their spectacular care in her final days.³
