Deceased Name: RUSSELL E. HOUGHTON
A memorial service for Russell Edward Houghton, 88, China, Maine, was held Saturday at the China Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Morrell, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Houghton died Aug. 12 at the Maine Veterans Home, Augusta, Maine.

He was the head of the English department at Beaver River Central School before retiring to China, Maine, on Nov. 13, 1980. He also worked in the English department of Schoharie Central School and was headmaster at Peacham Academy, Vt.

Born July 2, 1918, in Boston, Mass., son of Edward and Catherine Houghton, he attended Roxbury Latin School and graduated in 1941 from Harvard University.

His first teaching position was at the Coburn Classical Institute, Waterville, Maine.

He was drafted in the middle of the school year and fought in the Battle of the Bulge with Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army.

After the war, Mr. Houghton earned a master's degree at Boston University and later returned to work at the Coburn Institute for five more years.

He married Audrey Dyer on Aug. 18, 1946, in Waterville, Maine.

Mr. Houghton enjoyed attending church, playing the piano, refinishing furniture and sports, especially baseball.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons and their wives, Bradford L. and Sandra, Benton, Maine, and Robert L. and Betsey, Plymouth, Mass; a daughter and her husband, Kathryn Ann Houghton and Eric Cioppa, China, Maine; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were with Lawry Brothers, Fairfield, Maine.
