Boston, Feb. 9 -- Announcement is made of the engagement of Percy D. Haughton, head coach of the Harvard football team, and Mrs. Gwendolyn W. Howell of New York, widow of the Rev. Dr. Richard L. Howell, but the date of the wedding has not been given out.
Mrs. Howell was formerly Miss Gwendolyn Whistler of Baltimore, grandniece of James NcNeill Whistler, the noted American artist. She has been quite prominent in Baltimore's best society, and is known in social circles of London, Paris, and New York.
She is an accomplished musician. Percy D. Haughton is known wherever sports are talked. He was graduated from Harvard in 1899. He was one of the star members of the baseball team in college and was Captain in his senior year. He also made a great reputation as a football player, being on the team in 1896-7-8, and in the latter year Harvard defeated Yale by a score of 17 to 0.
After graduation Haughton was head coach of the Cornell football team for two years, and for the last three team for two years, and for the last three years he has been head coach for Harvard. He is connected with a Boston Brokerage firm.⁴

Percy Duncan Haughton (July 11, 1876 – October 27, 1924) was a head football coach at Cornell University, Harvard University, and Columbia University. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951. He was also the part owner of the Boston Braves from 1916-1918 [1] and Harvard baseball coach in 1915.

The Columbia coach was near death on October 27, 1924. Percy Haughton had been a hard-driving man, yet his final words were ones of gratitude and respect for his players. Just before the end, Haughton whispered, "Tell the squad I'm proud of them." Indeed, Haughton was a human contradiction but a gifted coach in a career that stretched a broken path from 1899 to 1924 and included tenures at Cornell (1899- 1900), Harvard (1908-1916) and Columbia (1923-1924). His overall record was 91-17-6, and his Harvard teams enjoyed an unbeaten streak (30-0-3) of 33 games in 1911-15. With the Crimson, Haughton was 71-7-5 over the 9 seasons. Haughton had starred with Harvard in his playing days, and even then, his shrewd, innovative mind was evident. Later, he would become the first to deploy the hidden-ball trick and the "Mouse Trap" play, in which his defense would allow the enemy through the line before chopping him down from the side. In his book, FOOTBALL AND HOW TO WATCH IT, Percy wrote, "Football is a miniature war game played under somewhat more civilized rules of conduct, in which the team becomes the military force of the school or university it represents."

A second-team All-American tackle at Harvard in 1898, Haughton coached Cornell to a 17-5-0 record from 1899 through 1900 and then went into business. He returned to Harvard as head coach in 1908 and was an immediate success, winning 9 games and tying 1 without a loss.
Haughton created the modern coaching staff. At the time, most teams had just one coach or, at most, one assistant. Haughton had a backfield coach, a line coach, and an end coach, as well as coaches who worked with passers and kickers. He also established a system of scouting opponents.
He also scheduled his practices to the minute, and he was one of the first coaches to use specialists. In Harvard's 4-0 victory over Yale in 1908, the winning field goal was kicked by Vic Kennard, who was put into the game for that one play. (A field goal was worth 4 points at that time.) Later in the game, a player named Sprague was sent in to punt 60 yards from behind the Harvard goal line, keeping Yale out of scoring range.
At a time when most teams emphasized power on offense, Haughton emphasized deception. He developed plays similar to those used in the modern T formation, with the quarterback often taking a direct snap from center, spinning, and faking or making handoffs to another backs. As one writer described it, "Rivals chased will-o'-the-wisps, only to discover somebody else had the ball."
Haughton is often credited with inventing the mousetrap play, on which a defensive player is allowed to cross the line of scrimmage and is then blocked from the side. When sportswriter Grantland Rice remarked to Haughton that Yale had large, fast linemen, Haughton responded, "I only wish they were twice as fast. We'll let 'em through and then cut 'em down."
He was also probably the first coach to use a five-man line with three linebackers. Since his teams were often undersized, that defense, like Haughton's offense, put a premium on speed. Harvard's defenders were taught to read offensive keys, and respond quickly to a developing play, with the object of getting three defenders to the point of attack.
In 9 seasons at Harvard, Haughton won 71 games while losing only 7 and tying 3. His 1912 and 1913 teams both won all 9 of their games. Haughton entered the service in 1917 and returned to private business after World War I ended. He coached Columbia to a 4-4-1 record in 1923 and died of a cerebral hemorrhage after the school had won 4 of its first 5 games in 1924.

Percy D. Haughton, who overthrew the strongest traditions in American football when he cooled the blue blood of the New Haven bulldog, has deserted Harvard to assume control of the faltering destinies of Columbia upon the football field.
This announcement by the Columbia University Committee on Athletics apparently heralds a radical change in their policy. Heretofore they have been struggling along with frequent changes of mediocre coaches and little to show for it in the winning column. Now they have done with halfway measures and turn their wreckage over to the finest mind in football. Columbia has recognized that a fourth-class football team can stain the records of a first-class university.
Haughton was a member of the Harvard team of 1897 that held Yale to a scoreless tie and of the 1898 eleven which won 11 to 0. He was captain of the Crimson baseball team in 1899. He came to Cambridge as head coach in 1908 and in the eight years that he held the position Harvard won 64 games out of 77, five games ending in a tie. He devised and established at Cambridge the most dangerous combination of strategy and strength in American football. The " Haughton system " is virtually a synonym for victory. Since 1916, he has acted in an advisory capacity to Head Coach Bob Fischer.
In the abstract the transfer of Haughton from Harvard to Columbia will prove deeply interesting as a test of the absolute value of coaching intelligence to a football team's success. At Harvard Haughton was supplied with every modern convenience in the way of equipment, some of the greatest material in football history, and the curious Harvard spirit which presupposes supremacy. At Columbia his general coffers will be cramped in comparison, his material quite without Groton and Exeter training, and his constituency lacking in what may be termed the superiority complex. If Mr. Haughton constructs a first-class team on Morningside Heights, he has indeed a strain of genius.
Percy Haughton's recent book, Football and How to Watch It (Doran), is addressed to the laymen in the stands as well as to the players on the field. It is designed to relieve a great deal of the strain felt by the unhappy undergraduate who takes a young lady to the game and has to devote all of his time to explaining to her that the object is not murder but pleasure.^2,9,10
