NoteFall River was a town that straddled two states before 1862. The Quequechan river had been the boundary between Tiverton and Freetown when both were part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1746, the English crown shifted the Rhode Island boundary at the expense of Massachusetts. Tiverton thus became part of Rhode Island. A sliver of the southwestern side of the Quequechan river remained in Freetown, Massachusetts. Almost immediately, the province of Massachusetts cried foul and insisted that Rhode Island had cheated on the boundary survey.

Fall River split off from Freetown in 1803 taking the boundary dispute as part of the partition package. In 1856, the town of Tiverton, Rhode Island voted to split off its northern section as Fall River, Rhode Island. The southern part of Tiverton was mainly agricultural; while the northern part was increasingly tied to the industrial activity of Fall River, Massachusetts.

The boundary dispute finally reached the United States Supreme Court in 1861. In a decision worthy of King Solomon, the Supreme Court rejected the royal charters and other impedimenta accumulated over two centuries and decided the boundary on the principle that communities split by the boundary should be united. As a result, Fall River, Rhode Island became part of Fall River, Massachusetts and Pawtucket, Massachusetts became part of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.10
