1937 – 2008

Elnora Lee Houghton, 71, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (December 23, 2008) at Columbia University Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri, following an automobile accident, south of Kirksville.

The daughter of Thomas Lee and Mildred Mae (Abney) Marler, she was born September 16, 1937 in Festus, Missouri. On June 7, 1957 in Kirksville, Missouri, Elnora was united in marriage to Everett D Houghton who preceded her in death on January 25, 1989.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Elnora is survived by three children, Donna Jean Wilson and husband Ed of St. Joseph, MO, Melvin Houghton and wife Katie of Trenton, MO and Shirlene Lloyd and husband Jason of Greentop, MO; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Carl and Charlotte Marler of Atlanta, MO, Phillip and Beth Marler of Sunset Hills, MO, Darrel Marler of Festus, MO and Kenneth and Barb Horton of Lennox, SD; one sister Brenda Moon and special friend Doug Counts, both of Festus, MO; four grandchildren, Brett Zinn, Alisha Kelim and husband David, Chanse and Creed Houghton; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Calvin Kelim and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special friend, John Whitte of Kirksville, MO.

Elnora received her education at the Athena School in DeSoto, Missouri. She resided in Boulder, Colorado until 1973 when she moved to the Bethany, Missouri area. While living in Bethany, she was employed twenty-three years for Lamberts Cap Factory. In 2000, Elnora moved to Kirksville, Missouri, area and began working in dietary services at Northeast Regional Medical Center where she was employed at the time of her death.

She was a life member of Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 2508; member of the Kirksville Church of the Nazarene, where she was active with the Food Pantry, and she was also a member of Senior Circle.

Elnora loved reading, crocheting, knitting, dancing and playing cards. She was a very giving person and had a bubbly smile that was an inspiration to many. She loved her grandchildren and the joy of life and the children around her. Elnora enjoyed her job at the hospital and the friendships that were made.

Elnora gave her life to the Lord and He called her home in time to celebrate her favorite holiday, Christmas, with Him.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday (December 28, 2008) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Pastor Mark Hagger officiating. Interment will follow the service at Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville.

Pallbearers will be, Chanse Houghton, David Kelim, Jerry Platz, John Rehms, Lloyd Thornburg and Mark Nauke. Honorary bearers will be, Art Heinold, Frank Reeseman, Lloyd Welte, Walt Galdbach, Brett Zinn, Darrel Wilhite and Robert Brochu.

Public visitation is in progress and family will receive friends this evening, Saturday (December 27, 2008) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Travis~Noe Funeral Home, 1008 Potter Avenue, Kirksville, Missouri, 660-665-1300.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Elnora Houghton Memorial Fund. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.²

son of Amos (who was son of Rev. War Capt/Deacon Ithmar Spencer b. 1733 Haddam/Fairfield, CT d. 1825 Otsego County) and Dorcas

The Spencers were from Haddam CT and later Hillsdale, Columbia Co, NY and Maryland, Otsego Co. NY

Ithamar owned lot #9 in the Franklin Patent until 1838 when he sold it to his nephew and moved to Unadilla where he died.

Reared in Maryland. After his marriage he resided 1 or 2 years in Dutchess Co., then returned to Otsego Co., and bought a tract of timber land next to his father's farm and erected a log house in which he lived until 1840. He then purchased a farm at the mouth of the Unadilla river, then removed to the village of Unadilla after a few years, and resided there until his death.

Edgar W. Houghton
LEXINGTON. May 10—Funeral services for Edgar W. Houghton. 75. of 356 Marrett road, who died Friday at his home, were held today at the First Universalist Church in Somerville. Rev. George. E. Leighton, minister, officiated, and Masonic rites were conducted by the Solev Lodge, A. F. & A. M.. of which Mr. Houghton was a member. Houghton, before coming to Lexington, lived for many years in Somerville and was connected with the North. Packing Company for 35 years. He was active in the Universalist Church for over 60 years and served the church society as treasurer for 25 years before retiring Jan. 1. He was a member of the board of directors of the Somerville Y. M. C. A. for several years and served as president during the Y’s reconstruction. Besides a wife, Marion B. Houghton, he leaves a son, George, of Philadelphia, and a sister. Mrs. Henry H. Gooding of New York.
