MARLBORO - James E. Houghton, 76, formerly of 32 Sumner St., died yesterday in Marlboro Hospital.

His wife, Elinor M. (Bonin) Houghton, died in 1988. He leaves a sister-in-law, Evelyn Houghton of Newburyport. He was born in Brighton, son of Frank and Mary (Kealy) Houghton, and lived here many years.

Mr. Houghton worked for 15 years for the Marlboro Water & Sewer Department before he retired. He formerly jointly owned and operated the former Lynch's Specialty Shop on Main Street for many years.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the Asian-Pacific theater.

Mr. Houghton was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and Marlboro Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an honorary member of Edward F. Sweeney Council, Knights of Columbus.

The funeral will be held Wednesday from John P. Rowe Funeral Home, 57 Main St., with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 22 Prospect St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to a charity of one's choice.
