BirthJun 27, 1806Petersham, Worcester Co., MA, USA3,2
Deathcirca 1844
BiographyWarren D. Houghton, youngest of two sons of Capt. Levi, born 1806. At 16 went to Guilford, Vt., serving three years as c l e r k in a store. Thence to Boston, as a bookkeeper and a salesman in the wholesale department of the large book and stationary store of B. Loring & Co., State St. Here two years'
experience qualified him for starting business on his own account as commission merchant and agent for the sale of paper products of Northern mills. Sold out, after a year or two and went to Texas, at that time a Mexican state, but largely peopled by Americans, who were already planning a Revolution to make i t independent and under a Republican government. In sympathy wdth this scheme, in which he was an active participator and bore his full share of the responsibility, he joined the Mier Expedition, a company of 100 or more well-armed men, who started to ascertain the nature and value of the vast territory bordering on the Rio Grande. While thus engaged, they were overtaken by a large baud of Mexican Cavalry, and after a sharp
skirmish, in which some of them were killed, were taken prisoners and marched to the Mexican Capital, more than 1000 miles distant, where as many as survived were thrown into a loathsome prison, scantily and meanly fed for months, until liberated by the intercession of Webster, then Secretary of State. The march from the prison to the city of Mexico was an experience of great hardship. At night the prisoners were huddled together into the smallest and filthiest quarters, with scarce space to stand, much less to sleep, without shelter of cover, and exposed to wind, rain and sleet. One cold, dark night, when confined in a cattle corral, they resolved to attempt an escape. In the struggle that ensued several of the guard were killed, but
they did not escape, and for this offence, on the following morning, ten of their number were condemned to death. Preceding the execution of the sentence, a jar containing white and black beans was produced, and each prisoner was made to take from it one bean. Those drawing a wdiite were ordered aside, if of the black the victim was forthwith taken out and shot. Our subject suffered so severely from his long imprisonment that he
lived but a few months after his return to Texas. He is remembered as a gentleman, bright, intelligent, of distinguished and commanding presence, genial and generous to a fault.

"Mier Expedition
(1842-1844)
The Mier Expedition was the most disastrous of all of the border confrontations between Texas and Mexico during the days of the Republic. It developed out of the Somervell Expediton, which disbanded soon after making brief raids into Laredo and Guerrero along the Rio Grande.

About 300 strong, the group elected William S. Fisher as their commander and moved down the Rio Grande opposite the Mexican town of Mier. With the main force of Texans, Fisher crossed the river on December 23, 1842 and occupied the town of Mier without opposition. They vacated later that day, however, after the town alcalde promised to deliver supplies to the that the Texans had demanded to thier camp.

Meanwhile, Mexican General Pedro Ampudia arrived at Mier and prevented delivery of the supplies. When the rations were not delivered as promised, the Texans re-entered Mier on Christmas day, this time by force. Heavy fighting resulted which continued until the following afternoon. The Texans, outnumbered by about ten to one, suffered thirty-one killed and wounded versus Mexican losses estimated at 600 killed and 200 wounded. However, the Texan's rations dwindled rapidly and they agreed to a surrender, although the terms of surrender were not well defined.

The Texas prisoners were at first sentenced to execution, but the execution order was later reversed. They were then held in the town of Matamoros until ordered to be moved to Mexico City. The Texans managed to escape their Mexican captors at the town of Salado on February 11, 1843. After much suffering, however, all but three of them were recaptured either individually or in small groups before they could make their way back to Texas.

The recaptured escapees, now totalling 176, were again sentenced to death by Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This order was subsequently reduced, however, so that one of every ten men, to be determined by lottery, were to be executed. In the lottery, which came to be known as the Black Bean Episode, seventeen of the unfortunate prisioners who drew black beans from a jar were blindfolded and shot.

Most of the remaining prisoners were marched to Mexico City, where they spent the summer of 1843 making road repairs. In September, they were transferred to Perote Prison, a highly secure stone fortress East of Mexico City. Here, they either died, escaped, or remained until the last of the group was released on September 14, 1844."4
