Research

Family tradition is that an illness going through the county killed the parents, and the children went to live with the Randalls. Apparently the two families were very close. By the 1870 census, the Houghton children were no longer living with the Randalls. They are between a bunch of Bennetts and the Randalls. I note that because the Bennetts and Randalls came from Kentucky to Illinois together in 1831, with a bunch of other related families, the Redmans being the only other name I can think of at the moment.³

William Houghton of Towanda is Summoned
William Houghton. 77 years of age, | and a pioneer resident of Towanda, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at his home near Towanda. Mr. Houghton was a retired farmer and stock raiser, and well known in this community. Ho is survived by his widow. Mrs. Sarah Arbuckle Houghton, and by the following children: Mrs. May Niehold, of Kempton; Mrs. Alice Middleton and Thomas Houghton, both of Peoria: Charles Houghton at home and one daughter in Michigan. There are three sons, Howard. Frank and John, deceased. In addition there are a number of surviving grandchildren.
