Hx of Keene NH gives John Houghton, son of Israel as Capt. John Houghton of Revol. War; JHW gives John, son of Benjamin⁷

Problem

Note same bd and dd; but note that John son of Israel is the one born in Lancester, 1745 per VRs. Note: There are two Capt. John Houghtons: this one and one Born to Benjamin Houghton Jr. and Ruth Wheelock. Both have same birthdays. This John is the one born in Lancaster MA.
M. Cole: The Houghton Genealogy, provides a different narrative for Captain John Houghton, but this conflicts with the records in Lancaster, MA and Keene, NH. It's clear from the land records that John Houghton of Keene, was the son of Israel Houghton. (Israel deeded land in Keene to him as his son in 1769), and the probate record names Relief as his widow. The birth records for Keene show births for John and Relief from 1774 to 1796. The marriage to Mary Allen and the various children attributed to John in the Houghton Genealogy need additional research to correctly place them. According to the Houghton Genealogy, he was only married to Mary Allen. Besides F. Weis, only JWH gives this marriage.
JWH gives no place data for the children of John, son of Israel.
The children of John of Keene are in the Keene VRs.

Biography

Stoneham MA Hx: "William Wallace Houghton, police officer, is a native of Putney, Vt., where he was born August 1, 1849, and is the son of Curtis G. and Susanna R. (Beckwith) Houghton, who had ten children. He attended school first at Putney, then at Westmoreland, N.H. On the very day he was 21 years of age he went to work for the Cheshire R. R. as fireman on a locomotive engine and later became an engineer. He was engaged at this employment a little over six years, residing at Keene, H. H., during the period working a portion of the time in the office of the Master Mechanic, making out schedules. In the fall of 1876 he was obliged to leave on account of ill health. He visited the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia, and from there came to Stoneham and soon after erected a homestead on Spring Street, in the easterly part of the town.
In 1877 he went to work in the shoe factory of Shaw & Worthen, where he was employed about eight years; subsequently was engineer at the box factory of Jewett & Cate.
About this time he sold his house on Spring street, and built his present residence, which is pleasantly located on Marble street.
In 1886 he went to work for Sanborn & Mann, running a heeling machine, where he remained for three years, until the spring of 1889, when he was appointed a regular police officer by the Selectmen and is still a member of the force...
Mr. Houghton has been a member of Beaver Brook Lodge, I.O.O.F., of Keene, N.H., for twenty years, is also a member of Fells Lodge, A.O.U.W., Highland Council, O.U.A.M., and Evergreen Lodge, D. Of R., all of Stoneham."⁸
