Notes for Nicholas H. Wyatt:
From the "History of Medina County and Ohio", 1881-
"N. H. Wyatt, transfer; Clyde, Sandusky Co; was born May 7, 1831, in Steuben Co., Wayne
Township, N.Y; son of Jonathan and Phoebe (Buck) Wyatt. He was born in August, about the
year 1776, in Providence, R.I; he was a son of Stutely Wyatt, who was a near relative of Sir John
Wyatt, who came over from England in the Mayflower, in 1620. Phoebe Buck was born in the
northwest part of Pennsylvania, Oct. 22, 1804; daughter of Benjamin Buck, who was of German
descent. In 1835, the Wyatt family emigrated West to Montgomery Township, Ashland Co.,
Ohio, where he purchased 40 acres, situated one mile north of the town of Ashland, where they
lived until Feb. 22, 1843, when they located in this township, southeast part, on a farm now
owned by Mr. Kiplinger, where he remained until his death, which occured in June, 1871. He
was a man of but limited education; was a man of industrious habits, and for fifty years was a
member of the regular Baptist Church. During the war of 1812, he "drew at nine drafts" and
came free each time, and volunteered at last. To him were born seven children, all of whom
attained mature years - four of whom are living - Susan, Mrs. Richard Stevenson, now in Kansas;
Ann, now in Dade Co., Mo., the wife of Robert Baubelle; Marvin B., in Clyde, Sandusky Co;
and Nicholas, our subject, who is the eldest of the number. At the age of 21, he hired out to work
by the mouth. In 1854, he went West to Winnebago Co., Ill., and engaged in farming pursuits.
Feb. 16, 1857, was married to Harriet M. Blair, who was born in this township July 7, 1839,
daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Blair, of this township. Mr. Wyatt was a resident of Winnebago
Co. for seven years. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Co. B, 74th Ill. V.I., serving three months;
then was transferred to second battalion, Co H, and was in charge of a company of pioneers of
the Pioneer Corps, whose place was in the advance of the army to pioneer the way for the
advancing columns - build bridges, and lay pontons across rivers and large streams not fordable,
and were often under fire, when in the discharge of their duty. Served twenty months in this
capacity, was then transferred into the 1st U.S. Veteran Engineers, Co. F, where he served until
the termination of the war. July 23, 1864, was Gen. Wood's Orderly, was bearing a dispatch to
Gen. McPherson, and saw him shot from his horse, and was the first man to pick him up and
place him in others' care. Upon his return from service, lived two years in this township, then
removed to Clyde, Sandusky Co., this State, where he has since resided and is permanently
located, andis engaged in the transfer and draying business. Of five children born him, three are
living Clara E., a teacher in the public schools at Clyde; Eddie and Harriet. Mr. Wyatt had two
brothers in the late war; Joel served eighteen months in the 6th O.V.C;since dead; has one child,
Stella. Marvin B., enlisted first for three months in Co. K, 8th Ohio. After serving his time, he reenlisted
for three years, serving out his time; was severely wounded at the battle of Gettysburg,
and was left for dead on the field. The Wyatt family are true and loyal Republicans."
His father's age in the 1860 census was 74 and in the 1850 census was 64. I believe the account
in "The History of Medina County and Ohio" to be in error when it states that he was born about
the year 1776. If he was born in 1776, the age difference between him and his wife would have
been 28 years, I believe that 19 years is more realistic. I believe the entire beginning of the
account to have major errors. It states that Jonathan was born in Providence, R.I. and the 1860
and 1850 census states Mass. The account also states that he was a descendant of Sir John Wyatt
who came over on the Mayflower; there was no passenger on the Mayflower by that name.²

Biography

Lewis H. Blair, according to the "History of Medina County and Ohio" published in
1881, lost his life while in Washington, D.C., where he was serving out his term of
enlistment as a member of Co. C, 79th Ohio National Guard. It should be noted that
his cousin, Loren H. Phinney served in the same Company. Loren would give his son
the middle name Lewis.
The following is a more accurate account.
On July 20, 1863, Loring volunteered and joined the Seventy-ninth Battalion, C
Company of the Ohio National Guard. He volunteered to serve five years. This
Company was made up of eighty-five volunteers from Lafayette Township and
surrounding areas. It included two of Loring's cousins, Hamilton M. Blair and Lewis
H. Blair. This was a State Militia for the protection of Ohio. On August 15, 1863, the
unit elected Oscar P. Phillips as its Captain. Not much is known of the groups' work
until May of 1864, when the 79th Battalion was mustered into U.S. Service as part of
the 166th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The following is taken from "A
History of The State of Ohio," Vol. IV. (The Civil War Era) page 428.
"Believing that the war could be ended by the close of the summer of 1864, if enough
men could be put into the field, it was proposed at a meeting of northwestern state
governors at Washington that each state supply a quota of men for one hundred days,
to be used chiefly for garrison or guard duty, thus releasing regulars for field service.
The governors agreed, the President accepted the plan and the call went forth. Brough
(then governor of Ohio), through his efficient Adjutant-General, Benjamin R. Cowen,
summoned the newly organized National Guard for this work. The driving energy of
the governor put 35,982 men into federal service within sixteen days. No other state
was so prompt. Only one company refused to serve, and it was dishonorably dismissed
from the National Guard. The hundred days' men performed a useful service, mostly
behind the lines, but their contribution did not enable the government to bring the war
to an end by autumn, as Brough had hoped. However, he had done his part."
The 166th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio,
May 13 and 15, 1864, to serve one hundred days. It was composed of the Fifty-ninth
Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Holmes County; Sixty-third Regiment, Ohio
National Guard, from Huron County; Seventy-ninth Battalion, Ohio National Guard,
from Medina County; and one company of the Fifty-second Battalion, Ohio National
Guard, from Wayne County. Twenty-seven out of eighty-five members of Company
C, Seventy-ninth Battalion, Ohio National Guard went into Company D, 166th
Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Fifty-eight members did not sign up for the
"Hundred Days." Loring and his cousin, Hamilton Blair, did not sign up, however, his
cousin Lewis Blair (Hamilton's half brother) did. On June 2, 1864, Lewis became the
first member of the 166th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry to die. In all, forty
members would die in the war. Out of the twenty-seven members that enlisted for the
"Hundred Days," from Lafayette, three would die while serving: Lewis, Jacob A.
Miller, and Levi Miller.
His birth date is arrived by taking his death date and subtracting 22Y 6M 12D. That is
his age on his tombstone.

It should be noted that in her obituary of 1934 Row is spelled with an e. It is believed that she
passed this spelling on to her children as being correct. In 2000, the family gained access to her
parents hand written Marriage Liscense on which the name is spelled Row, without the e. In the
19th century it was common place for the same name to be spelled differant ways and for families
to spell the same name differantly.

Mrs. Caroline Phinney
Funeral services for Caroline Rowe Phinney were held Thursday, Aug. 9, conducted by Rev.
George Bates, at the Waite funeral parlors in Medina. Mrs. Phinney died Aug. 6, at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Frank Shaw, 2758 West 16th street, Cleveland, after a few days' illness. She
suffered a stroke which proved fatal.
Had she lived one day more she would have been 89 years old. The last nine years of her life
were chiefly spent with her daughter, Elsie, with frequent visits with her grandson, Carl Phinney,
and friends from Medina.
At an early age she associated herself with the Baptist church and spent he entire life a
Christian, believing in God and His teachings. Her greatest comfort was found in reading the
Bible.
Caroline Rowe Phinney was born in Vevay, Switzerland county, Indiana on Aug. 7, 1845, the
only child of William M. and Mary Ann Cole Rowe. Being left and orphan in infancy, at the age
of seven years, she came to Ohio and lived with the family of John Jacobs, in Lafayette. Oct. 22,
1865, she was married to Laung(sic) H. Phinney, who died April 4, 1915. To this union two
children were born, a daughter and a son. Mrs. Elsie Shaw and Irwin, who died at the age of 50
years. There are three grandchildren, Evelyn Shaw and Mrs. Mildred Holcomb, of Cleveland,
and Carl Phinney, of Medina, and three great-grandchildren.²

LAFAYETTE FARMER DIES VERY SUDDENLY
Irving L. Phinney, one of the best known farmers of Lafayette, died very suddenly Monday
morning. He had been apparently in the best of health, and Dr. Gleason, who was called, declared
it a case of acute uremic poisoning or Bright's disease, though none of the family knew that he
had been afflicted in that way. He leaves a wife and one son, Carl, who, with his family lives at
home. He lacked only 17 days of being 50 years of age. Funeral services will be held at the home
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. H. Samuel Fritsch, of Cleveland, officiating.

Ebenezer's obit in 1929 says Mary Allen died "37 years ago" which would have made it 1892.
Tombstone Inscriptions From the Cemeteries in Medina Co., Ohio - 1983, compiled by The
Medina Co. Genealogical Society has her grave marker stating "Phinney, Mary h/w, 1844 -
1898." I suspected this to be a typo since Eben remarried in 1894, which makes the 1892 date
more realistic. Upon visiting the grave in 2005, I found that Mary died in Feb. of 1893 which
means that Eben died 2 months shy of 37 years later.

In the 1900 census Almira stated that she was the mother of 6 children. Three were still living
with her and Eben, two sons and a daughter. Their names were Ford C. Wagar, 17, Edwin R.
Wagar, 14, and Vernie B. Wagar, 12.

Subject: Almira Carrington
A distant cousin sent the Carrington web site to me tonight and I was so delighted to find your
question about Almira Carrington. I have no help regarding descendents of hers but I am looking
for information about her parents. Do you have any?
Almira was my father's aunt. Almira's younger sister Mary, was my grandmother. I have the
birth and death dates of all eight children plus marriage dates of seven - Maria never married. I
have much history about some of the children, but little about their parents. Albert Carrington
was born in 9/1797 and Olive Merriam in 1/17/1811. He died on 1/24/1860-63. Olive died on
5/3/1876 - 78. Her father, James Merriam married Betsey (I think) in 1798 in Watertown,
Hartford, Conn.
I was born in Medina County and lived there until 1947 when I married and left the area. My
mother's family lived in York and I have been in the York cemetery in the past 3 or 4 years.
Small world, isn't it? I don't get to Medina County very often any more. We winter in Fla. and
live in Newark, Ohio in the summer and that is over 2 hrs. south of Medina.

FRANK E. SHAW TO BE BURIED HERE
Former Native of Lafayette Dies in Cleveland, Saturday
Burial services will be held at Spring Grove cemetery here today for Frank E. Shaw, 73, of
Cleveland who died of pneumonia in the Cleveland City hospital, Saturday.
Born and raised in Lafayette township, Shaw operated a machine shop in Medina before he
moved to Cleveland over 30 years ago. He retired as a stationary engineer in 1933. He was one
of nine children of the late Mr. and Mrs. George M. Shaw of Lafayette.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Lindhors(t) funeral home,
1610 Clark avenue, S. W., with burial later in the afternoon at Spring Grove cemetery. He is
survived by his wife, Elsie, two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn G. Davis and Mrs. Mildred Holcomb,
both of Cleveland; two sisters, Miss Zada Shaw of Medina and Mrs. Lena Myers of Lafayette;
one brother, Earl P. Shaw, of Lafayette, and one grandson.

Francisco Port of Entry.

Mr. Carl Raymond Davis, 73, 20 Huntington Place, a retired U.S. Army colonel, died
Tuesday.
A native of Ohio, Col. Davis served in World War I as a sergeant in the 145th
Infantry, 37th Division, Ohio National Guard. He was awarded the Purple Heart after
being wounded in France.
After the war he became an officer in the 145th in Cleveland, Ohio. During World
War II he served in the Transportation Corps at the ports of Boston and New Orleans
and finally with the overseas supply branch of the port of San Francisco at Fort
Mason, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Relieved of active duty in 1947 due to a service connected disability, he became an
official of the Cleveland Recreation Department until his retirement in 1955.
He was active in the American Legion of which he was a lifetime member and the
Military Order of the World Wars and became a member of the Central Florida
Chapter, Retired Officers Association, and the Stag Club of Winter Park after moving
here in 1955. He was a Congregationalist.
Survivors: widow, Evelyn G., Winter Park, and brother, Clarence, New London, Ohio.

Carl F. Phinney, 76, of 991 Wadsworth Rd., Medina, died Thursday in Glenhaven Nursing Home,
Chippewa Lake.
Born in Lafayette Twp., he had been a mechanic for 18 years and retired from the Medina County
Highway Department. He had also been employed at Gibbs Motor for 16 years.
Mr. Phinney is survived by his wife, Lucille Hoff Clinesmith Phinney, son Richard Phinney of
Medina, and one grandchild.
Mr. Phinney was a member of Medina United Methodist Church and Montville Grange.
The family will receive friends at Waite and Son Memorial Home, Medina, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
