BiographyGail Clarke: Thomas was an ornamental painter and farmer who lived in Constableville, Lewis, NY. His estate was valued at $800 in 1850. In 1855, Thomas was living next door to JOSIAH SAWYER HOUGHTON, and had three boarders living in the house as well. Thomas bought land in West Turin, Lewis, NY from James Constable on October 1, 1851. He sold Lot 25 (25 acres) to Isaac Hathaway on July 12, 1855 for $175.00. During the Civil War, Thomas was a Private in the 140th NY Infantry, Company H. Enlisted on 8/26/1862 at Fairport, NY. On 9/13/1862 he mustered into "H" Co. NY 140th Infantry. He died of disease on November 17, 1863 while fighting in the Civil War at Harpers Ferry, Jefferson, WV. ObituaryFeb 15, 1899Syracuse, NY, USA, HOUGHTON. On January 23. 1899. at his home In North Hay, N. Y„ occurred the death of Josiah Sawyer Houghton, aged seventy-live years, a life long member of the Methodist Episcopal Church unci father of the Rev. 0. J. Houghton, of the Northern New York Conference. Brother Houghton was born in Constablevllle, Lewis county, April 21. 1824, of Christian parents. He early' gave his heart to the Lord and at the age of twenty-one commenced preaching as a local preacher. Front that time until within a few years he has been active in the work. His greatest ability seems to have been as an organizer of Sunday schools. His genial ways, ready wit, and exhaustless fund of stories made him especially attractive to young people and many of the Sabbath schools remain as monuments of his work. While without early educational advantages Brother Houghton was a well read man. He possessed a large and well selected library. His commentaries, now in the possession of his son. especially show the marks of careful study. He was a man of marvelous faith, seldom discouraged and always confident that the Lord would give success to his Word. Until about a month before his death he was a constant and interested attendant upon all the means of grace. His last days were peaceful and without pain, and he died in the same happy mood in which he lived. After his death there was found under his pillow a hymn book in which he had marked the words, "Vain world adieu." The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church of North Bay on Thursday, January 26, and were in charge of the pastor assisted by the Rev. H. F. Whipple, of Vienna charge. Had brother Houghton survived until April he would have celebrated his golden wedding, having married Betsey Fitch, of North Bay, on April 2, 1819. Besides the widow three sons survive: the Rev. O. J. Houghton, of North Western; George A., of North Bay; and Thomas A. of Rochester; also two daughters, Phoebe A., of North Buy; and Mrs. Sarah Lampher, of Hitchcock, South Dakota. Frederick A. Miller
BiographyGail Clarke: JOSIAH grew up in Constableville, Lewis, NY. His early schooling is not known, but he was educated and well read. At age 21 JOSIAH began preaching, but was a carpenter, blacksmith and lumberman as well. After his marriage he lived in Constableville for a while and apprenticed to Jacob Sixby. In 1845, JOSIAH and RICHARDSON bought lots 85 and 86 equalling 43 acres, from Fellus Taylor, Ona Taylor, and William Wadsworth. In 1849, JOSIAH bought land from Noah Wadlams and Millard and Dorothy Allen. On March 23, 1849, he sold part of Lot 86 (4 acres) to Fellus Taylor for $238.00. On May 14, 1849, JOSIAH and BETSEY sold Lot 85 and 86 (18 acres) to William and Eliza Ralph for $536.00. On Feb. 5, 1850, he sold lot 88 (4 acres) to William Allen. He bought Lot 96 from Seth Miller (one of the original town settlers) on Aug. 15, 1856 for $5.00. It included 2.75 rods "if they keep it fenced without cost or expense to Seth Miller." JOSIAH eventually left Constableville and moved to North Bay, Vienna, Oneida, NY and took up residence on the ASA FITCH farm. On June 2, 1862, the heirs of the ASA FITCH estate disposed of the property. JOSIAH bought out the rest of the heirs, and sold part of the estate to Aaron Bushnell. In Sept. 1870, he bought land from Aaron Bushnell. JOSIAH also was a farmer and blacksmith in Vienna, and owned a 20 acre lot in Vienna, lot # 90.
JOSIAH was a preacher in North Bay in 1877 and Oswego, Oswego, NY in 1881. Since Oswego is located on the NYS Canal system, he probably travel their by packet boat, which
likely much easier than going overland by horseback. He organized Sunday schools and had an easy manner that appealed to people. He was well-read and had a large library. He was active throughout his life and died peacefully in his home at North Bay. His death certificate states that JOSIAH died of cirrosis of the liver of unknown duration.
(This is interesting because the family was known to be part of the temperance movement.) His granite tombstone stands in the North Bay Cemetery.
Have copy of obituary. Was a preacher in North Bay 1877, Oswego 1881 (have copy of licenses) Have his diary from 1848-49 His early schooling is not known. At age 21 he began preaching, but was a carpenter, blacksmith and lumberman as well. After his marriage he lived in Constableville for a while and apprenticed to Jacob Sixby. Then he moved to North Bay and took up residence on the Fitch farm. He organized Sunday schools and had an easy manner that appealed to people. He was well-read and had a large library. He was active throughout his life and died peacefully in his home at North Bay. JWH erroneously gives him as dying in the army from burns on 23 Jan 1864.

BiographyLydia, Oren, and her brother Josiah were particularly close, and often spent time together. Lydia and Oren lived in the vicinity of North Bay, Oneida, NY. In 1870, William Pollard was a farm hand living with the family. Oren was a boatbuilder, farmer, and carpenter in North Bay, New York. After Oren's death, Lydia stayed in North Bay, owning 2 acres.
Lydia married Luman Metcalf (1814 - aft. 1884), a farmer in Augusta Center/Knoxboro, NY. Luman owned Lot 13 (82 acres) in Knoxboro, and she relocated there. Luman’s father was Eleazar Metcalf, who was one of the early settlers of Augusta, NY. He and Joseph Bartholemew erected Augusta's first grist mill in 1809. He is buried in the Augusta-Knoxboro, NY cemetery. In the 1880 Census, a 12 year old daughter, Euphrasie Fitch, was living with Lydia and was going to school in Augusta. Lydia was "keeping house." Oren J. Houghton lived with them there while attending school, and during in his early years as a teacher before he met and married Nettie Lyman. Luman signed Oren's report cards while Oren attended school in Knoxboro. After Luman's death, Lydia lived with her children in later years, returning to Michigan where she was in 1870.7
NoteCarole Atkins: I have the pension papers for Oren J. Fitch, Lydia Houghton's first husband. She remarried after his death and, after her second husband's death, she applied for Oren's pension. One of the affidavits affirming Lydia's marriage to Oren Fitch is by Oren Josiah Houghton born C. 1857.
Dutton: AFN: 41R0-SP Microfilm AF83-069649 1394299 Moved to Knoxboro after her second marriage. Oren Houghton lived with her there while attending school.8,9

BiographyGail Clarke: William Henry Houghton (1836-1915) (HSP #i9211) was born and raised in Constableville, Lewis, NY. He moved with his mother, SARAH BENNETT HOUGHTON (HSP #i8294), and his brother, James Richardson Houghton (1839-1916) from Constableville, Lewis, NY to live with his uncle/step-father, James Houghton (HSP #i7782), in
Verona (Dunbarton), Oneida, NY about 1850. In 1850, William's family lived next to William's uncle, Manassah Houghton (1790 - ) (HSP #i8288). In 1857, William made a trip to the state of Iowa to check out whether it would be a good place to live. His goal was that both he and his brother would farm in the Midwest. William married Anna Jenette Poppleton Akey (1835 - 1911),(HSP #i9211) the widow of Nelson Akey (1832 - ), on August 15, 1859 in Verona, Oneida, NY. Jennette was born and raised in DunbartonVerona, Oneida. NY Nelson, her first husband, was born in French Canada and became a naturalized American citizen in 1854. He was sponsored by Jennette's father. In 1855, Jennette and Nelson, a boatman, lived next to Jennette's family in Dunbarton/ Verona, Oneida, NY. In 1860, William, Jennette, and Jennette's daughter, Ida Kate Akey lived in Verona, Oneida, NY where he was a farmer with land valued at $1000.00. Their farm was next door to his mother and stepfather's farm. In 1865, the family lived in Verona, Oneida, NY and William's brother, James Richardson Houghton, was with them. George H. Poppleton, Jennette's father, gave title to land to William in 1869. This may have been where Jennette and Nelson were living in 1855. He would have completely relocated at that time, but the Civil War intervened. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army as
a private in Company B, 46th Infantry Regiment in Iowa on June 10,1864. He was mustered out on September 23, 1864 at Davenport, IA. William eventually brought the rest of his family to Iowa in 1866. They first lived in Maquoketa, Jackson, IA for two years. They lived for a year in Kirksville, Adair, MO. By 1870, they had moved to a farm northwest of Grinnell, Malcolm Township, Poweshiek, IA and shared a farm with William's brother, James and James's wife Cerelda Jane Hunsaker Houghton (HSP #i9219). William continued to live in Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA and farm, eventually getting another farm northwest of town in 1873 where they lived for years. In 1881, William made an arrangement with William A. Foster to adopt his infant daughter, Ethel M. Foster. This adoption was handled through land records, which may have been the agency that handled adoptions before social service and adoption services were established. One can only speculate on why the Fosters wanted to do this, but some possible reasons include poverty or inability to
care for the baby properly. Grinnell experienced a tornado that did considerable damage on June 17, 1882 William and Jennette were members of the Methodist Church, located at Fifth and Park Streets in Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA, and were actively involved until Jennette's death and William's physical infirmities made that difficult. Both were considered kind parents and good neighbors. In 1896, William sold land to the City of Grinnell when it was starting to expand. The parcel was fairly small, so it may have been the
location of a new civic building, school, or hospital. In 1900, William and Jennette were still on their Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA farm and had a farm hand, William Henry, living with them. In 1905, William and Jennette and Ethel were living with son, John and his family in Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA.In 1909, William sold part of his farm that was being developed as the city of Grinnell expanded. In 1910, William was retired and living by himself in his house because Jennette was infirm and was living in town with Ida. Jennette died of paralysis in 1911. William died of pneumonia and acute indigestion and they both died in Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA They are buried in the Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA. in Block. B. lot 4517

Y. Volunteers, was a brother of Mrs. Houghton. Fifty-one years ago Sister Houghton was married to J.S. Houghton, of Constableville, Lewis Co., NY.

Five children survive the deceased: Phebc, an invalid daughtcr to whose loving and constant care Mother Houghton has devoted forty-flve years of hcr life; the Rev. O. J. Houghton, of North Western and member of the Northern New York Conference; George Houghton, of North Bay; Sarah Lamphier of South Dakota and Thomas Houghton, of Rochester. “Her children rise up to call her blessed." All except the one in Dakota were at her bedside in her last hours. Mother Houghton was Mother Houghton was converted at North Bay in her eighteenth year and has been walking in the Christian pathway for nearly sixty years. She seemed to realize for several days before she departed that “the time of her departure was at hand." Her last testimony showed that her faith was like an anchor to the soul, leaving a glorious hope that if faithful, the mourning ones may clasp those dear old hands and see her loving face where parting will be no more. She had not She had not left her soul's salvation till the dying hour, hence her unwavering faith., Her pastor calling on her a short time before her death and asking what was her best word, she triumphantly in the language of Wesley said, "The Lord is with us" As she was nearing the valley she repeated part of the twenty-third or “Shepherd Psalm,“ closing with that blessed verse “Yea, though I walk through the valley and the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” On being asked, “Mother, is Jesus with you?" "Yes, sir, 1 know he is," was the reply, And to the inquiry, as to the hope of Heaven, she said "The sky was all clear, all was fair.'' Yea, the clouds were all lifting and she was noon to bask forever in God's eternal sunshine. Her love for all about her was strong even in death. When the eyes, the hand or voice could no longer respond to inquiries for recognition, the dear lips gave each a parting kiss as the loving spirit "brushed the dew of Jordan banks" and joined the holy ranks of “friends and kindred dear" swelling that great throng of who have come out of great tribulation and "washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb." Thus passed from labor to reward a Ioving and devoted mother, a kind neighbor and friend to all about her. Her funeral took place from her late home and the Methodist Episcopal church, North Bay, Friday, March 22. She was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery in the village near the lake. The hearers were her three sons and youngest brother. Her pastor, the Rev. H. Casier, of North Bay, officiated, preaching from the appropriate text, I. Cor. 4: 57— "Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
