BENNETT on Sept. 26, 1848 in West Turin. He, SARAH, and William and James (sons of RICHARDSON)
all moved to Oneida County, where he owned a 12 acre farm in State Bridge, Verona, Oneida, NY on lot #
26. It was valued at $300 in 1850, $1200.00 in 1860, and $7000 in 1870. He remained a farmer all his life.⁵

Land Recrd

between 1835 and 1845

Richardson bought and sold land several times in Lewis County. On January 17, 1835, he and Sarah bought land from John Prindle for $33.00. They then sold the same land to Elijah Wadsworth on April 1, 1835 for $33.00. This was part of lot 86 in the township of West Turin. They bought land (part of lot 96) from Elijah Wadsworth on April 27, 1835 for $500.00. This land was bounded by land belonging to Wadsworth, Seth Miller, and the highway. On Feb. 8, 1845, he and his son, Josiah, bought lot 86 from Fellus Taylor. On January 25, 1847, he bought nineteen acres of land from Asel and Eleanor Higby for $100.00 (part of lot 85) in West Turin.

Biography

Love: "William Houghton was born in Bolton, Mass., March 23, 1774...He married Marilla Clay on February 11, 1802 [CJV: Feb. 14]... Capt. William Houghton was somewhat of a rover and took his growing family with him as he moved from one place to another up the Connecticut Valley and into the Vermont Hills, and even when his children had begun to establish themselves, into the southwest part of New York State. There were six sons and six daughters, and a period of twenty-three years separated Marilla, the youngest, from Stella, the oldest of the twelve. One daughter died in infancy, and one, Diantha, died unmarried at the age of thirty-six. All the others married and had fine useful lives. In 1801, the year before his marriage, William Houghton 'took up his claim' in Lyndon, Vt., along with James Ayers, Joe Beemis, Abel Brown, Oliver Chaffee, Ira Evans, Samuel Parks, Job Randall, Abraham Smith, James Shearman and Aaron Walker. In the family move to Sutton, Vt. in 1818, Capt. William, a tanner by trade, had failed in business in Lyndon, his previous home, and seems to have a livelihood in Sutton by working for farmers in the neighborhood. It is not difficult to visualize the fact that this livelihood was not a very lucrative one, considering that there were nine sons and daughters alive at that time, the oldest being sixteen years of age. Two more children were to be born in the next six years. So we can well believe what Hemenway's Gazette says on page 52, volume 5, part 3 of the History of Sutton, Vt., 'The parents were exceedingly poor and it is said that many a time the mother had been heard to say that after one meal was served, she did not know ehere the next was to come from, but some of the children had much force of character and soon made a mark for themselves... After a few years in Sutton, the family went to Bradford, Vt. and later to Nunda, in Livingston County, N.Y. By this time most of the children had left home on their own affairs. The mother and father made their home with the William Houghton, Jrs. in Nunda for the rest of their lives, save for a few years prior to 1858 when they lived in Cambridge with their son, Henry Oscar Houghton... ...He, meaning William, had been a member of the local militia company, serving as Captain. In those early days every able bodied man belonged to his local militia and was ready at the alarm for duty... After his wife's death in 1858, Capt. William Houghton returned to Nunda and made his home with his son, William, Jr., until his death, October 12, 1863. The remains of William and Marilla Houghton were first interred in Sutton, Vt., but later were moved to Cambridge Municipal Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass."²²

Thomas Boyden took the job of raising up the old meeting house in 1817, and putting beneath granite under-pinning. He hired Henry Houghton of this town, who married Sally Perry, sister of Dr. Isaac Boyden's wife to help him. Houghton was an excellent mechanic and had served 7 years in Montreal to learn his trade. He made the pulpit and some of the pews in front, in the old church. Mr. Boyden learned the art of surveying land and was a surveyor many years. After his death the compass and chain which he used were sold to Samuel Knight.^5,17,8
