ResearchBetsey's baptismal certificate gave her name as Ella Elizabeth Adelaide (reason unknown), name never seen elsewhere, nor used. She went by her middle name after her marriage to Harry, who had known some horrible unkempt old woman named Ella. Hartsville is now known as Purdy Creek. Betsey was cremated 24 Jan 92 in Waterbury; a memorial service was held at the Masonic Home in Wallingford, where she & Harry had both been residing, on 25 Jan. Betsey Hull outlined her father's life by dates of events--that is the source of this info.4

BiographyAunt Nell Diton said. "He came to America at the age of 16 years. With him were his mother and his brother, Henry , and two half brothers by the name of Stelzner. The party arrived in Charleston, South Carolina. They made their way to Chicago area for a time before arriving in Nauvoo, Illinois. He had married Melissa shortly before coming to Nauvoo and were to have 13 children." Christian's brother Henry had preceded them to Nauvoo. Christian is buried in the Golden's Point Cemetery which is located across the road from the church of that name. (Its south of Nauvoo and north of Hamilton, Illinois)
(February 2002- I have just found the ships passenger list for the STELZNER Family arrival: They left from Breman and arrived in New York on October 3, 1846 on the ship named the Emigrant. The party consisted of Ludn (?) Stelzner age 48 male shoemaker from Prussia; Antoinette Stelzner age 46 female from Prussia; Hemrich Stelzner age 22 male from Prussia; Christian Stelzner age 19 male from Prussia; and August Stelzner age 11 male from Prussia. Now I must try to understand why this is so different from Aunt Nell's story. I wish I had asked how she got this info. Now it appears that there was only one Stelzner half brother, August, and that Hemrich is Henry HAMMA and Christian is Christian HAMMA. I now believe that Christian and Melissa married in IL, IA, or MO as I have found them both in Hancock county in 1850. I have been unable to find any connection to Charleston but I'm still on the look out. There was mention in Melissa's obituary of Christian and Melissa spending time in Chicago before coming back to Sonora township to raise their family.)
          ____________________________________________

August 16, 2000: Recieved a letter from Margie Hamma Litchfield in answer to my question of Christian's home place. She confirms my guess (from the Hancock Co. Atlas of 1874) that the farm where she grew up was the place that Christian lived and ran a garden nursery. She remembers pine trees that he planted south of the house.

"Nauvoo Independent" Wednesday December 7, 1910

THE LAST OF EARTH

"Death of Christain Hamma and Sol Bertschi, two well known residents of this vicinity.
The many friends in this city and vicinity will be surprised and shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Christian Hamma, one of the old settlers of Sonora Township, which occurred yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Carss, in Keokuk, with whom he has been staying much of the time of late. Mr. Hamma was in Nauvoo only ten days ago when he seemed in his old time vigor. On November 7th he celebrated his 83 birthday. The Independent, in making mention of of the event , said Mr. Hamma was lively and enjoyed good health for his age. and this was true. And now he is dead.
Mr. Hamma took sick only last Saturday evening. His death was due to paralysis of the bowels.
The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany and came to this country when a young man. He settled in Sonora Township where he had been a resident for about fifty years. He was married to Miss Melissa Houghton, and to the union twelve children were born. The mother passed away four years ago and two children, Christian and Mrs. Frank Enright, also preceded him in death. The surviving children are: Mrs Lizzie Noles and Mrs. Sadie Ballinger of Montrose; Mrs. Mary Carss and Mrs. Robert Trickett of Keokuk, Iowa, Mrs. Ed Herbert, Mrs. Burt Crosby and Frank Hamma of Hamilton, Illinois; David, William, and Henry of Sonora Township. There are also thirty grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
The deceased was of the old settlers of this community and helped clear the forest and blaze the way for civilization. As a farmer he worked hard and successfully, and reaped his reward in the fruition out of a rugged constitution, good health and an ample sustenance. He reared a large family. He was a lover of his home and he loved to see his children to manhood and womanhood. Mr. Hamma was of a genial, happy disposition and was always in a happy mood. He was a good citizen, a kind father and husband, and he was held in high regard by all classes of citizens. To the bereaved ones is extended the sympathy of all.
The funeral will take place from the Golden Point Church tomorrow at 11 o’clock A.M. Rev. McArthar officiating. Burial in Curry Cemetery." (Also known as the Oak Grove Cemetery of Sonora township)
          ____________________________________________________

Written by Ida Pearl HAMMA KRUSE: "My paternal Grandfather was born in Hanover Germany and came to America via Charleston Harbor at age 16. He met and married my Grandmother Elizabeth Houghton who was born in Vermont. They had 13 children, one died at an early age.
They lived on a farm near Nauvoo, IL in a two story house with eight rooms and a full basement with a big wooden trough where milk was cooled in water, and bin for apples, potatoes and root crops were stored for winter use. South of the house stood a row of pine and hemlock trees with a dozen or more bee hives near by, which furnished honey all year long. They butchered both beef and pork, which provided smoked ham and bacon, lard and sausages as well as turkeys, chickens, ducks and geese as there were 14 mouths to feed. Peach, apple, plum, and cherry orchards provided jams, jellies, canned and fresh fruit. A vineyard of Concord grapes some of which were made into wine. Cows furnished milk and butter. A large truck garden furnished potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage to make kraut and to use fresh and many other vegetables. Down the middle of the garden was a row of current and goosebury bushes. Along the fence was ruhbarb and asparagus.
When all were married and had families, holidays at Grampa's was really something and April 2, 1902 they celebrated their Golden Wedding and in the program I spoke a long piece and they gave me a ten dollar gold piece. Then one by one the golden links were broken and after many years these things are but a memory to those who remain."

As written by Ida Pearl HAMMA KRUSE: "My Grandfather HAMMA (Christian HAMMA) was born in Hanover Germany. He had a brother Henry who is buried in the Nauvoo Cemetery. When they were young their Father (My Great Grandfather) died and their Mother married a man named STEZLER. When Grandpa (Christian) was 16 years old his Mother, Stepfather, Stepbrothers, and his brother Henry came to America via the Charleston Harbor in Carolina settling near Chicago and later in Nauvoo, where he lived to the ripe old age of 85. He was the Father of 13 children, raising 12 of them, they (the children) married and had 37 grandchildren. Granpa (Christian) lies buried in Oak Grove Cemetery near Golden Point Church."

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - July 22, 1892 "The roof of the residence of Chrisitan Hamma, of Sonora township, caught fire last Friday but for the timely discovery the house would have no doublt burned to the ground. A large hole was burned in the roof, and it is supposed that it orginated from sparks from the chimney. Mr. Hamma first saw the blaze from the barn." (This is added to Chris Hamma Jr.'s notes also as I don't know which barn it was.)

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - Jan. 13, 1906 - "Chris Hamma of Sonora, while in town Wednesday, was a pleasant caller and renewed his subscription for another year of the old reliable."

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - August 29, 1908 - "Real Estate Transfer. Chritian Hamma, a few days ago, sold his farm in Sonora twp. to his son David, for the consideration of $3,822. The farm contains 60 acres and the latter will move upon it perhaps next spring."

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - Dec. 11, 1907 - "Your esteemed old veteran, Chris Hamma, took Thanksgiving dinner with his daughter, Mrs. Ballinger."

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - April 18, 1908 - "Christian Hamma has been quite ill this past week."7

Contributnand his DNA to the Houghton DNA project
ResearchJames is an R-M173; Robert is an R-M269; both are documented descendants of John Houghton of NJ; R-M173 usually turns out to be R-M269, so perhaps they are in the same R1b major haplogroup. Therefore, perhaps they are from the same documented line. But at only YDNA 12 allelles, I would not hazard a guess.

CJV: Unfortunately we have only 2 volunteers on the Houghton DNA group who have documentary evidence of descendancy from John Houghton of Stony Brook, New Jersey. James Lowell Houghton, who has passed away, had solid evidence for this descendancy and has a DNA haplogroup of R-M173; Robert turns out to be haplogroup R-M269. Neither James or Robert's DNA matches any other Houghton DNA volunteer's DNA out of 81 volunteers. I originally was hoping Robert would prove the lineage of John Houghton of NJ, but this turns out not to be the case. When I looked at Robert's DNA matches at FTDNA (and there are hundreds of listed persons) there was not a single match that was a Houghton. His closest DNA matches are to males with surnames of Walker and MacCordle, both of which have a genetic distance of 2 out of 67, which means they are very related. So we have a real genetic mystery. We cannot currently conclude either James or Robert are descendant's of John Houghton, without getting more volunteers.
