Research, as well as Ornan, went to Nauvoo, IL after they were converted by Joseph Smith to the Mormon Church. Eli and Deborah were in Nauvoo Third ward.
ResearchKathy Ostvig: "according to family records I have for Deborah and Eli their children are James, Newel, Mary, George, Edward, Charlotte, Eliza, Carlos, Daniel; this is from a family Bible page, that was in the possession of my husbands grandfather." NO Emaline A. Houghton

Kathy Ostvig: "... the only two daughter the family knows about are Laura & Deborah my husband descends from Deborah & Eli the same as Joan Flygare she is his fathers' cousin. The Eliza in this will are the children of Newell Houghton and Rosy. I do not recall Eliza being in the 1850 census. I have been unable to find her and Carlos after Eli left Nauvoo, I have checked all the local Minnesota 5 year census and the federal census for the area of Wright and Sherburne Co.. Which one are you refering too, the 1850 Nauvoo census? It is highly questionable for many reasons. The main one being that many of the children listed as being in the family are not living in Illinois at the
time, they are all listed with their maiden names even though they are married. Newel and James are in the Benton Territorial census in 1850 in Minnesota, Mary & Sam Fuller are married and in Iowa, and Charlotte is in Portland Maine with her husband Joseph Lindsay. They family states that Eli came to Minnesota in 1848-9 but I have been unable to find any records of them being here. The land records in Eli name show up after that date, and I have been unable to find a record of him. I was curious with the Eli you have listed in Potowatamie(sp?) Iowa in 1850 since I have been unable to find a record with the family as it actually exsisted in 1850. Aurilla is the wife of Ornan Houghton Elis Brother, Emaline could be his(Ornan's)+ daughter, or maybe there was a daughter that no one in the family knows about between Deborah & Laura they were 5 years apart in age. Deborah 1845 in Nauvoo, and Laura in 1850 some record indicate she was born in Nauvoo but I have been unable to verify that, and everyone indicates they left Nauvoo prior to 1850."9

BiographyHarrington: Jonathan Houghton was a farmer. No record of his marriage or of the place of birth of his three children has been found. [CJV: Kirby VT] Child's Gazetteer of Vermont, town of Kirby, says: 'Jonathan Houghton, son of Jonathan Houghton, was a native of Westminster, Vt., and was the first settler on the farm where his son Jonathan now (1886) resides. He married Polly Wilder ... and died at the age of 38'. Kirby land records show that he was of Westminster, Vt., on 18 May1815 when he bought 40 acres of land in Kirby. The town records also show that Jonathan Houghton, wife Polly, and three children were notified 'to remove from the bounds of the town' on 5 Sep 1816. From these two items, it can be assumed that Jonathan Houghton moved his family from Westminster to Kirby in the fall of 1815. The birth records of his children are from the Kirby records. He died in 1820 and his widow Polly was appointed administratrix of the estate which inventoried $609.17. In February 1822, Timothy Locke of Kirby was appointed guardian of Amanda, ae .ab. 10; Mary A., as .ab .8; and Jonathan Houghton, ae. ab. 5 years. The widow Polly probably married Charles Bryant about that time. They continued to live on the farm as shown by the following: On l3 Ap 1832 Charles Bryant and Polly 'do agree that we will make no claim against said estate on account of any debts paid by said Polly, or costs of settlement more than the amount of personal property by her received and that we will make no claim for support of minor children'. The heirs, - Timothy Locke, Cobin Balch, Jr., and Mary A. Houghton - 'will make no claim against the said Charles Bryant and Polly, his wife, for use of our part of said real estate since the death of Jonathan Houghton to the present time'. On the same date, Alpheus Houghton and Abel Edgell, Esq. both of Lyndon and Rufus Godding, Esq. of Burke were appointed a committee to set off to Mrs. Polly Briant, late widow of Jonathan Houghton, formerly of Kirby, her dower in the estate of the deceased. The estate then consisted of 140 acres of land with buildings in Kirby. Polly Briant was given her share on 10My1832. The remainder was divided 1/4 part to Mrs. Amanda Balch, wife of Cobin Baloh, Jr; 1/4 part to Mary A. Houghton, daughter of said deceased; and 1/2 part to the son Jonathan Houghton. After her only son Jonathan became of age, Charles Bryant and wife Polly, on 2OJe1837, leased the farm to him for 5 years. In 1840 Coben Baloh Jr. and wife Amanda E; and Levi S. Harrington and wife Mary Atline quit-claim their rights in the estate to Jonathan Houghton, Jr. Jonathan Houghton. his wife Polly and Charles Bryant are buried in adjoining graves in the Kirby grave-yard. The St. Johnsbury Caledonian of July 27,1860 has the following obituary: 'Died in Barton at the residence of her son-in-law Isaac G. Angier, June 28, Mrs. Polly Bryant, relict of the late Charles Bryant of Kirby, aged 71 years'. REF. - Town and Other Records as Quoted.9
