BiographyHe left England at the age of 25 alone for New York from where he went to Milford, Oakland Co., MI, where he had relatives. He married Maria Ann Houghton Luther in 1853 and in Oct. 1854 bought land in Section three, William's Twp, Bay Co., MI. He was the first settler in the wilderness of the township named for him. The farm near Auburn, 2 miles north of the Midland road,on the east side of the Fisherville Road. On Jan. 9 1855, after he cut a sled road through 10 miles of woods and swamps, he built a cabin. He and Maria had six children. He left his wife and family and married Mrs. Ann Eliza Catlin of Bay City in 1879, which appears to be when Maria's first husban returned "from the dead". William died by asphyxiation in a root cellar while cutting up mangelworzels for cow fodder on Jan. 29, 1883, at the age of 59 years and 10 days. He had a bucket of buring coals with him for warmth, which caused the axphyxiation.2
