F. T. HOUGHTON
F. T. Houghton. 86. died Wednesday night at the home of his daughter. Mrs. L. P. Martiny in Eagle Point, following a lingering Illness. Mr. Houghton, who had spent a considerable part of the past five years at his daughters home, had been ailing for some time but was not confined to his bed until Sunday.
Mr. Houghton was born in Augusta, Me.. In 1847, and at the age of 7 years moved to Reedsburg. Wis.. with his parents where they settled on a farm. Here he married and resided for 58 years. Retiring from farming he lived with his family at Reedsburg for 14 years until the death of his wife nearly five yean ago. He had spent most of his last years at the Martiny home.

Biography

Larry Elderkin: Uncle Vandon cut my hair in his barbershop and we enjoyed eating "Hobo Stew" which was his baby to make. They are both buried in Scappoose, Oregon.I remember "Uncle Vandon" talking about Winlock, Washington a lot and how much he enjoyed fishing in the ocean, usually off the beach at Long Beach, Washington.
I remember "Uncle Vandon" pulling my six year molars in his barbershop in St.Helens, Oregon, with the help of my father;
Larry Elderkin: Uncle Vandon was one of the last of the "bloodletters" as they were called, The red, white and blue on the barber pole was a sign to the public that they could go there and get a shave and a haircut and he also pulled teeth. He did this without the aid of any pain killing medicines. I can testify to that, because he pulled my six year old molars and my father held me down while it was done.
I am pretty sure that's why he was also involved in the funeral home just three houses from his. He was more than qualified to give people their final haircuts and also shave them. He was a very good man and we went down to Saint Helens every Saturday to eat with them. He made one mean pot of "Hobo stew", as he called it. He used a lot of pepper in it and simmered it all through the week. My aunt Mabel wasn't the best of cooks, I guess. He had curly red hair and was known as "Red". The barber by all who went to his shop. When I knew him, he was balding and grown up through his red hair a little bit. His children were also redheads. Uncle Vandon loved fishing in the ocean. I remember several trips to Long Beach to go fishing in the surf. I could never figure why he enjoyed the breeze in his face with water that continued coming right at him.²

Hayward S. Houghton: "Charles 7 Kimball Houghton
Born at Littleton, Mass. on May 1, 1876, the third son and fourth child of Charles Ward and Abby Frances (Hayward) Houghton. His birthplace is presently numbered 155 Great Road and, as of 1972, is owned and occupied by Albert Pickard, a son of Florence Rice (Houghton) Pickard, sister of Charles K. Houghton.
He lived at this place until 1888 when his father turned the farm over to a half brother, James Frederick, and moved to what is now numbered 6 Foster Street at Littleton Center.
His elementary schooling was at the Nahoba District School located about a quarter of a mile east of his home, just beyond the intersection of the road to Chelmsford and Great Road. The building was known much later as the "Mary Shepard", a restaurant. It has had many vicissitudes, before and since. He graduated at Littleton High School with the class of 1894. (There were 13 in the class). At the exercises on June 22nd he gave a talk on "The Tariff Problem". During 1897 and 1898 he attended Burdett College in Boston, helping his father with the farm at Littleton Center during vacations.
Under date of August 12, 1899, Gertrude Frances Flagg wrote in her diary: "Went to choir rehearsal this eve. C.K.H. came home with me. He and I are practically engaged now." On August 13th (Sunday) she wrote: "Charlie spent the evening with me, after having spoken to Papa." She received her ring on October 19, 1899.
On November 9, 1899 he left for Chicago where he was employed as a shipping clerk in the wool department of Swift & Co. (His brother, Elroy, after graduating at Mt. Hermon School in 1899 following one year at the Littleton High School, and after clerking in the store of Albert F. Conant at Littleton Common until 1891, had gone to Chicago as a clerk in the wool department of Swift. He later became the head of this department.)
Meanwhile his fiancee graduated at Littleton High School on June 25, 1897. As Salutatorian of her class she spoke on "Individuality in Musical Composition". (Her future sister-in-law, Florence R. Houghton spoke on "A Remedy for American Philistinism"!) For the next two years she attended the New England Conservatory of Music at Boston, majoring in Pianoforte. Upon completion of her cocurse she taught piano in Littleton and West Acton having, over the period of the following three years of teaching about 46 pupils. She used to commute to West Action on Fridays and teach on Friday and Saturday, often staying over night with her aunt Charlotte Blanchard.
In 1902, at the request of Albert F. Conant (and doubtless influenced somewhat by his fiancee) he came back to Littleton to become a partner with Mr. Conant and Everett Kimball in Conant & Co. I have heard that the company was first called "Conant, Kimball & Houghton", but if so, it soon was shortened to Conant & Co.
On September 2, 1902 he was appointed Postmaster at Littleton Common. He held this position continuously until August 1, 1934, when, due to his being of a different political persuation than the incumbant President, and due to an application by one of the correct political stripe, his appointment was terminated. However, on November 7, 1936, because of the death of the appointee, he was appointed Acting Postmaster, In March of 1940, ready to step down, he learned that because of the politically inspired hiatus in his term, he was not eligible for a pension.
On September 17, 1903 he was married to gertrude Francis Flagg who was born at Littleton on October 20, 1879 to Charles Francis and Elizabeth Webster (Sanderson) Flagg. The wedding was held at the Charles F. Flagg home on Foster Street at the corner of Mill Road, now number 100 Foster St."
The officiating clergyman was Rev. Francis R. Enslin of the Littleton Baptist Church. The Flaggs had attended this church since the time of Daniel Flagg who came to Littleton in 1798, and was one of the founders of the churc in March of 1822, and perhaps was one of those who first met at a stone altar on Nashoba Hill in 1818. The Houghtons and Sandersons attended the Orthodox Congregational Church. When Elizabeth Sanderson married Charles Flagg, she attended (and played the organ at) the Baptist Church. However, in a diary entry by Gertrude F. Flagg, dated December 4, 1898 we find: "Sunday. Fine day. Papa, Mamma, Marion & I went to Cong'l Ch. today. It looks as if we were going there right along." Evidently there was dissatisfaction with the Rev. Mr. Cloues, then pastor which triggered the change. In effect, Elizabeth Flagg changed one organ console for another, as she played at the Cong'l. Church quite regularly, - and, on occassion substituted at the Unitarian Church. The reason for the Baptist wedding was that, at the particular time, the Congregational Church was without a pastor.
The wedding trip started at Lake Nagog Inn, thence to North Woodstock N.H. Upon their return they rented a part of the house on Great Road where they were to spend the rest of their married life. In 1905 they bought the house, -from Eugene Parker who had been a preceding partner of A. F. Conant, as well as a brother-in-law.
In April of 1924 the interest of A. F. Conant was purchased by Everett Kimball and Charles K. Houghton who conducted Conant & Co., as partners, Mr. Kimball being in charge of the store at Littleton Depot; this store although carrying a small general stock, specialized particularly in grain.
Everett Kimball died March 5, 1931. His interest in the partnership was bought from his estate. At this time George E. Howard, who had been a clerk and 'route man' for many years, became a partner. This partnership continued under the old name of Conant & Co. until the grocery section was sold to Damon Hall. The partnership was then dissolved and Mr. Howard went with Mr. Hall as clerk.
In April of 1947 the business of Conant & Co. and the building at Littleton Common was sold to Donald Holbrook who continued the business for a while as "Conant Littleton Company". The building at Littleton Depot had been disposed of in 1931. If memory serves properly, the building at the East Littleton Railway Station was disposed of about 1924. This latter building, next to the freight house of the New Haven's Nashua and Acton Branch, called "The Red Line", had been used for the storage of lime and fertilizers. Trains on this line in the period around 1919 were "mixed", -passenger coach and freight cars on the same train. One of the last, -probably the last station agent was Fred Defoe, who commuted from Graniteville each day.
In writing of this area, one remembers a hayfield (and victory garden during the first World War) owned or rented by Conant & Co. primarily for the hay for the store horses. For some reason this area, down a lane off the Lowell Road opposite the farm of George (later John) Kimball, was referred to as the "Jockey Lot". C. K. H., who was a farmer at heart, insisted that his son must learn to do all the incidents of haying, including that rather technical process called loading, -so that the hay would stay put until it arrived at the barn. To lose the laod, or a part of it, was considered a reflection of one's ability and a source of joshing, - not to mention the extra work of reloading somewhere along the road.
Modern conveniences arrived at Littleton Common in 1912. Although there had been telephones, notably the "Farmer's Line", an independent company, The C.K. Houghtons' telphone was installed March 9, 1912 - a hand cranked affair on a six party line "for which the subscriber agreed to pay the Company eighteen dollars per year, and to pay the regular rate for all toll calls." The telephone number was 23 ring 4. Town water became available in mid 1912; electricity was turned on in September. Until that time, homes outside of the immediate Common had to depend upon wells. Those clustered around the Common received water by underground pipe from a large well and power pump at Conant & Houghton Company's factory. Electricity, although available on September 14, 1912, was not brought into the Houghton house until 1915 or 1916, - and real up-to-date bathroom facilities came to the house at about the same time.
Charles Kimball Houghton died at his home at Littleton Common on Sunday, April 30, 1950, the day before his 74th birthday. The funeral was at the Congregational Church on Wednesday, May 3d. The Lowell Sun of May 4, 1950 said: "Flags of the community were at half-staff and business establishments closed in respect to the memory of the late Charles Kimball Houghton whose funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the Orthodox Congregational Church."
Gertrude Frances (Flagg) Houghton died at Littleton on June 18, 1971 in her 92nd year. Her eyesight had been failing for some time; several shocks had impaired her physically. She spent her last days at a private nursing and rest home in Newtown section of Littleton. Both she and her husband are buried in the family lot at Westlawn Cemetery in Littleton.

MLM: He attended school in Littleton, MA. He was a shipping clerk for Swift & Co. of Chicago, Ill for 10 years. He then resigned and returned to Littleton and worked for Conant & Co. as a store clerk. By 1902 he was a member of the firm and was working there in 1923. In 1902 he was appointed P.M. of Littleton, MA. He attendedd the Orthodox Congregational church.³
