BiographyFrederick M. Houghton (1869 - 1950)

The Chapter is named in memory of Frederick M. Houghton who pioneered western New York archaeology during his half-century of service as an educator and administrator in the Buffalo public school system.

The son of an English couple, Houghton was born on a small farm in south Buffalo in 1869. On graduating high school, he sold wholesale hardware for four years before passing the first civil service exam for principals. He was assigned first to school 29, in 1895, and, three years later, to school 28. This was the Polish community of Buffalo, and there he remained until his retirement in 1939, at age 70.

Houghton pioneered teaching English as a second language (ESL). He wrote two textbooks and established a revolutionary program which were adopted as national standards in the US and Canada. In addition to being principal of five public schools (41 years), and director of immigrant education for the Buffalo Board of Education (12 years), Houghton lectured in education (14 years) at Buffalo State (Teachers) College. He also taught English to immigrants, educated teachers of ESL, developed the first cooperative arrangement between a school and a museum (the Buffalo Museum of Science), an arrangement which has been copied throughout the United States. Houghton's love of nature lead him to establish a native wildflower preserve in the Zoar Valley near Springville, New York. He died after a brief illness in 1950 and is interred in Woodlawn Cemetary, Orchard Park, NY.

Houghton received training in geology at Harvard University (no degree granted), and for seven years he carried out geological and archaeological research for the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences in his spare time. Recognized for his contributions to the natural science of the Niagara Frontier, Houghton was active as an avocational archaeologist for close to three decades. Indeed, his publications remain some of the most authoritative works yet published on the region. As a member of the Board of Managers of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences (1898-1950) and third Vice President (1942-1950) of the Buffalo Museum of Science, he was a leading figure in the programs concerning archaeology and geology presented at the Museum.

Houghton conducted seminal research into the origins of the Seneca nation, tracing their village migration in western New York, as well as conducting geological and archaeological research that reached from Elmira, NY, south to the Pennsylvania border, northwest to Welland, Ontario, and westward to Cleveland, Ohio. Some of his Iroquoian research was especially important at a time when the Iroquoian peoples were pushing forward land claims with the governments of Canada and the US.

Houghton received an honorary M.S. from Alfred University in 1911, and the Cornplanter Medal for Iroquoian Research from the Cayuga Historical Society in Auburn, NY, in 1923. Houghton Academy (Buffalo School 69) and nearby fifty acre Houghton Park on Clinton Street in Buffalo were established through his efforts and bear his name (click here for a map).

Biography"H. Arthur, eldest child of William and Libby (White) Houghton, was born in the town of Rotterdam, Schenectady county, New York, August 22, 1860. He was educated in the public schools of the different towns in which his parents resided, and secured a good education nevertheless. While yet a young man he began operating for himself. He established a teaming and express business that was a marked success from the very beginning, so thoroughly had he won the confidence and respect of the community. He maintained his business in Amsterdam until he was possessed of sufficient means to warrant the purchase of a good farm of one hundred and twenty-eight acres in the town of Florida, on Terwilliger creek, a famous stream that waters the farms of a large section of the town. This farm he operates as a model dairy. The appointments are all modern, and the entire farm is conducted on the most approved, up-to-date methods. To the farm he devotes his special attention and energetic supervision. He has devised a new system for the construction of farm fencing by means of concrete posts which he manufactures himself, he being the first to engage in this method of farm fence building in this part of the country. He proposes to fence his entire farm in this manner. He is a Republican, but not an office seeker. Mr. Houghton married (first) December 31, 1884, in Amsterdam, New York, Cornelia Cunningham, born in Utica, New York, May 2, 1861, died at her home in Amsterdam, March 25, 1891... Mr. Houghton married (second) January 18, 1893, in Amsterdam, Mrs. Nellie (Boice) Westervelt, born at Coeymans, New York, May 22, 1862, widow of George Westervelt, who died in 1885, leaving a son, Melvin B. Westervelt, born December 26, 1885, a resident of Albany, New York, an iron worker, married Florence Cramer, of Amsterdam, New York. Children of second marriage: Floyd B., born August 6, 1895. Earl B., July 16, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton take an active interest in all that pertains to the welfare of the Methodist church in their city. The family on both sides have been for generations past members of that religious denomination."2

Petition of E. Mark Houghton to the Surrogate's Court, County of Jefferson
in the matter of the administration of the goods, chattels and credits of
Harriet C. Houghton:

... that said Harriet C. Houghton departed this life on the 5th day of
April, 1932, in the village of Theresa, in said Co., intestate.
ObituaryObit (from unknown newspaper, 6 Apr 1932, "Mrs. Harriet Houghton"):

Mrs. Harriet Houghton, 89, passed away at 10:30 Tuesday night at the
Theresa hospital. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age. Among
those at the bedside when she died was her son, Dr. Mark Houghton of
Detroit.

Mrs. Houghton was born in the Town of Alexandria, April 9, 1843, the
daughter of Rodney and Polly Simonds. The family soon after moved to
Theresa township acquiring large tracts of land in the Theresa lake
region. Mrs. Houghton's father was a veteran of the War of 1812. Two
brothers, John and Duane, served throught the Civil War. Duane decided to
go to the rich lands of the midwest and it was only a couple years ago
that he passed away. John Simonds passed away in this village six years
ago.

Mrs. Houghton married William Houghton. Much of her life has been spent
here. Her husband died 30 years ago. Mrs. Houghton has traveled quite
widely. Even when she was advanced in years she would start for California
or the Canadian northwest.

She was a member of the M. E. church of this village and of the Howland
Circle. For some time the Howland Circle has celebrated Appomattox Day and
the birthday of Mrs. Houghton with patriotic exercises and dinner.

She is survived by three sons, James Houghton of this village; Dr. Mark
Houghton of Detroit and Roy Houghton of the Canadian northwest.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the M. E. church and was
largely attended. Rev. C. E. Hastings, pastor of the church officiating.
Burial was made in Oakwood cemetery.4
BiographyCelebrated her birthday every year on Appomattox Day. Three of her
brothers (John, Duane and Henry) served in the Civil War. Harriet spent
much of her life in Theresa, NY. She was an extensive traveller, and is
reported to have gone alone on long trips to California or the Canadian
northwest until well into her eighties. She was active in the Howland
Circle and the Methodist-Episcopal church.4
